"Which one's the Queen?"
"I'm the Queen!"
"No, you aren't!" - androothebear, on 10/12/2007, -5/+84By far the best way to get rid of ants:
leave a little pile of gunpowder next to an ant hill. Ants naturally collect the gunpowder thinking its dirt, and after a few days, drop a match down and your whole lawn will lift off a good 2 feet - EmileVictor, on 10/12/2007, -15/+79Most awesome series of digg comments I've seen in a while. /clap
- phatvolvo, on 10/12/2007, -9/+70I, for one, will welcome our giant ant overlords.
So my chimney is safe. - jeszus, on 10/12/2007, -29/+87I feel bad for all the poor little ants that were killed while making those.
- Paroparo, on 10/12/2007, -7/+63In before PETA claiming animal cruelty.
- ragipy, on 10/12/2007, -11/+66"I'm impressed at what those little dudes can do."
Yeah those researchers are crafty, plaster who would have thought.
/just kidding - Alphabet, on 10/12/2007, -1/+55I'm not sure how many, but some of the casts created were made without killing any ants.
From one of the pictures:
"Plaster casts of Pogonomyrmex badius nests excavated by 250 workers taken from the uppermost chambers, the middle-depth and the bottom of a mature nest. Each group was penned in an escape-proof enclosure for 4 days, after which workers coming to the surface were recaptured, and a plaster cast of their nest was made. The figure shows one of 4 similar replicate sets." - venom8599, on 10/12/2007, -1/+55Freedom! Horrible freedom!
- usherzx, on 10/12/2007, -3/+50I sell ant skinned purses, coats, and hats for a living.
They don't seem to give a ***** about ants. - ffejrey, on 10/12/2007, -6/+53I don't have a chimney :p
- HotGore, on 10/12/2007, -8/+54It was worth it.
- Seifey, on 10/12/2007, -1/+46If I can kill something without noticing, they aren't equal to me.
- edilclyde, on 10/12/2007, -6/+49i just piss on the thing... might not be as effective but atleast its satisfying
- usherzx, on 10/12/2007, -1/+42what does salt do to an ant? I thought salt was for slugs..
- usherzx, on 10/12/2007, -2/+42through the heating and air vents I guess?
- Franey97, on 10/12/2007, -1/+37Homer, I don't mind that you stole the flowers from my flower bed, but did you have to salt the earth?
- bpmox, on 10/12/2007, -2/+34probably shouldn't be salting your yard...
- TeatimeGrommit, on 10/12/2007, -3/+33I want to see a video of that! Gunpowder vs. ants!
- BinaryFragger, on 10/12/2007, -1/+29I would enjoy seeing the Mythbusters try that.
It would give Jamie his big boom. - coolbru, on 10/12/2007, -1/+28> "The smallest form of life, even an ant or a clam, is equal to a human being." -Ingrid Newkirk, PETA
Sure, Malaria has feelings too. - TeatimeGrommit, on 10/12/2007, -2/+27Um? They got evicted by plaster. They aren't going to be our overlords.
- MackDiesel2010, on 10/12/2007, -6/+30Damn right they are...I use ant hospitals all the time. I hear they're gonna start offering civilians cheap rides to space in their ant shuttles, too.
- venom8599, on 10/12/2007, -2/+22@PopeAmadeus
I probably would, though I'll admit, sometimes I can be an *****. - staed, on 10/12/2007, -2/+20If you live where it gets really cold in the winter you could try to stick an iron rod from the top straight down the anthill. When winter comes the cold will travel through the rod and chill the entire hill. They will all freeze to death.
- mehss, on 10/12/2007, -10/+25This comment should be dugg up all the way, and mine dugg down all the way.
- AnotherBrian, on 10/12/2007, -0/+15I once saw a program on the discovery channel about some guy that made castings like this with molten zinc.
- Artifez, on 10/12/2007, -3/+17I've heard dish soap suffocates them but it could just be an urabn myth, thankfully, I've never had a need to test it.
- audiowizard, on 10/12/2007, -3/+17It would't be too difficult to smoke them out before pouting the polymere.
- dracomalfoy724, on 10/12/2007, -1/+13I have a whole bunch of friends who are doing research with that guy. He came and spoke at Oberlin College, my school, last year and brought some of these awesome castings. Really cool stuff!
- knulpm, on 10/12/2007, -3/+15Ants freak me out man. Death to all those hive minded, Borg/Zombie esque bastards.
- Junkyarddawg, on 10/12/2007, -1/+12Serious reply: There are slow-acting poisons mixed with syrup you can buy. It's just sortof a little bowl with stuff which tastes sweet to the ants which you place next to the opening, then wait. The ants find it, eat, it bring it back home, feed the queen, feed the kids...
- venom8599, on 10/12/2007, -2/+12They'd probably try to claim he was committing genocide.
- MadNuke, on 10/12/2007, -2/+12Seems a little bit dangerous to ignite a network of gunpowder that you very well may be standing on.
- mike81890, on 10/12/2007, -3/+13Resistance is futile....
you will be assimilated - ohsin, on 10/12/2007, -2/+12anyone can pour plaster in anthills.it must be hard work getting the plaster structure out carefully
- 2point71, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10thats so crazy. the first shot of the guy standing next to it... wow...
- MackDiesel2010, on 10/12/2007, -4/+13Patently false.
- MackDiesel2010, on 10/12/2007, -5/+14"The smallest form of life, even an ant or a clam, is equal to a human
being."
-Ingrid Newkirk, PETA - AnotherBrian, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9I assumed they used metal because it's very heavy and wouldn't be stopped by air pockets.
- SemajReffahs, on 10/12/2007, -3/+12@ venom...
im sorry i completly LOLed at work...damn that comment was ***** halarious - acdcfanbill, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8Yea I saw that as well. I'm guessing these are zinc because plaster might have too high a viscosity and too long a drying time to work.
