eurekalert.org — Engineers at the Tokyo Institute of Technology in Japan are building an odour recorder capable of doing just that. Simply point the gadget at a freshly baked cookie, for example, and it will analyse its odour and reproduce it for you using a host of non-toxic chemicals.

I think the company used to be called "Virtual Scents" or something like that. I hated seeing that thing! It had to be one of the dumbest ideas of the dotcom era. Yeah, I was really going to spend money on "smell cartridges" just so I can make my room smell like a dungeon when I played Doom.

The possibilities paired with other technologies (such as stereovision) creates a truly immersive world. Imagine on World of Warcraft, being able to stand on the coast and smell the ocean breeze. Admittedly, such a thing is far off, but I'm optimistic.

    I'm not sure why you're being modded down here - that's exactly what I was thinking. you don't want to get too excited, but with more and more of these impressive technologies coming out, you have to wonder how far off it really is. Does anyone remember that research into 3D projections a few months back? I think they needed a gas present to project the light into, but that looked really cool.
