- Klyith, on 10/12/2007, -12/+57Old. Prehistoric, even. This was one of the first "you gotta see this" videos that spread across the net, back in like 95 or 96.
I guess the joy of YouTube is that the new generation gets to see all these cool things for the first time again. - mercuryswitch, on 10/12/2007, -3/+24"BTW: Why is spell check not working?"
Says the guy named "mastercheif" - Hollister, on 10/12/2007, -5/+20why you get modded down for saying something insightful I'll never know,
but "Dude thats awesome :D" appearently is much more intelligent - Guano, on 10/12/2007, -3/+12I was expecting to see Charlie Chaplin come in and try to put the fire out.
- kodek, on 10/12/2007, -6/+15@Hollister: In Digg, one gets modded up if people agree with the post, not if the post is insightful or interesting.
- merreborn, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9"mcbarron:
Who cares about your childhood?"
.. In this case, his childhood is on topic. He's talking about growing up in the town this video took place in.
That's what these threads are for: on topic discussion. - OBKenobi, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6
One briquette presoaked in LOX is approx equiv to 1 stick of dynamite.
BBQWMD. - kiranlightpaw, on 10/12/2007, -3/+6Or, you could go right to the source. The dude's homepage
http://www.doeblitz.net/ghg/
Back in the day, it was hosted on Purdue's ECN servers. If I remember right, the guy is a engineering professor. - Ralphy, on 10/12/2007, -3/+6his website looks like it was put together in 1992
- tomatoenator, on 10/12/2007, -5/+8That is totally cool1! The best part was the children running around at the park in the background acting like nothing was going on. This is awesome!
- ianweir, on 10/12/2007, -4/+7Or perhaps Chuck Norris would breathe on it, either making it freeze solid instantly, or cause the surrounding woods to burn down in seconds.
- sigbald, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4"WARNING: an ignition source, such as a lit cigarette or one glowing coal, must be present before pouring on the LOX. If charcoal is PRESOAKED in LOX first, an explosion will result. One briquette presoaked in LOX is approx equiv to 1 stick of dynamite."
humm.... so 60 lbs of briquettes will make....
look ma no more arms ! - VipeNess, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5KFC
- mcbarron, on 10/12/2007, -4/+6Yeah, I grew up in West Lafayette (actually went to school with two of Prof. Goble's sons). When living so close to an engineering campus, where the ratio of men to women is 55:45, you tend to get used to seeing things like this. It's inevitable given the equation:
[(lack of women) * (engineering mindset)]^(too much free time)
FYI: the park where they are doing this is Happy Hollow park, near shelter 4:
http://parks.city.west-lafayette.in.us/hollow_info.asp - CrustyOldman, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4This was one of the first videos on the web. A classic! Like watching an old Marx Bros, or Felix the Cat.
I guess the web has matured. - Ralphy, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4I can see the burgers now, burnt on the outside and raw on the inside... that's if there is any burger left...
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5would have been better in real time
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5@ Ralphy
No doctype in the source code; W3C was founded in '94, so you could be right. - felchdonkey, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Great, now how about someone post a link to Hamsterdance?
- Arramol, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4Nothing like a bit of rocket fuel to get the old grill started...
- 0x2a, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4This is so old Dave Barry wrote about it in a book back like nine or ten years ago... But i guess most people didn't watch online videos back then, so digg anyway
- burke, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2oh my god. I just scanned the source, and not only was there no Doctype, there wasn't even an ..., and I'm pretty sure I saw a ... in there somewhere.
Yup. there it is. - SUNderhaus, on 10/12/2007, -7/+8Or Smokey The Bear would rush out from behind one of the trees..
- Al.x, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1This is a dupe. I submitted this 87 days ago: http://digg.com/science/BBQ_with_liquid_O2_vaporize_grill_(movie)
- RobotCitizen, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2What next, cooking With Thermite?
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2"his website looks like it was put together in 1992"
'96 actually - DubbleA, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3This is really funny!!
- funkytaco, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4This guy is one ingredient away from a Darwin award. :)
- dr_benway, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2"Prof Goble?" He wasn't a prof. A crazy smart engineer/software/UNIX jock, but no prof.
kids? r u kidding? most people wondered if he'd ever been laid...thoughts of reproduction sent shivers through their spines. i was in grad school at purdue during this time. didn't go to the infamous picnic, but it WAS the talk and laugh of the lab afterwords. my good friend was ghg's boss (as much as anyone can be his boss) at ecn for a stint. - Otto, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2For when you want your burgers *****' *done*.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -4/+4Real men post videos that aren't sped up.
- bmcnally, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1The really cool videos are the ones where they add an alkali metal to water (sodium, potassium, etc). The ones that are higher on the periodic table, like Cesium, react so violently that they produce Hydrogen gas and a lot of heat; enough heat to ignite the Hydrogen gas hovering above it.
That said, anytime someone knows just enough Chemistry to be dangerous, it's pretty funny. - pixel, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2Yep, old, but good.
And if I had access to LOX, I'd be building rockets a la Goddard. - burke, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1by the way, I meant and . I forgot Digg strips tags.
(you can add a tag like this: " <html> ") - GoNoles, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0If YouTube clip not loading, use this link:
http://www.doeblitz.net/ghg/grill1.mov - dagfooyo, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Check out this awes0me thing I jsut found DOOD!!1!!111cos(0)!!
http://www.hampsterdance.com/classorig.html
It's all these hamsters... DANCING its like the C000lest tnig ever LOLROFLWTFNAFTA - ianweir, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Ahh, the memories.. I remember seeing this way back in the days when I didn't even have internet access, and things like this were passed around at user group meetings on floppy disks.. Nothing like a bit of nostalgia every once in a while.
Shame it's sped up though, kills the drama. - burke, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2If this wasn't so dangerous, and I had a bucket of O2(l) outside, I would try this right now. It looks like fun.
- Mulo, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Not many people know that metal will burn with enough oxygen. That's why the Q's disintegrated.
- towsonu2003, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1stupid - killed grass for no reason.
- Strongoloid, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1"Result is a grill ready to cook in about 3 seconds, and all the old grease, etc burned off."
Not only did it burn of all the grease, it burned away the grill away almost completely and left somewhat of a smoldering ruin on the ground. FUN! - CarlosReyes, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1nothing like eating powdered burgers on fossilized bread.
- CarlosReyes, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1cuz women get too hard after a point... not really.
- Flankk, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1I hope these men get treated for their oxygen burns. The men are real, after all.
- Arramol, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1I think you meant to say, "Look ma, no more neighborhood!"
- au071, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1I remember this; these are Purdue Univ. school of engineering picnics:) Later, the fire department politely told them not to do it anymore...
- Poon007, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1I think that would be great if it wqas a bit more controled. The fool just dumped it on there and it spilled everything everywhere. Real nice to cook right on the ground. Nice idea, but stupid execution.
- dimatt, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2I've always wondered why the hell people choose to do these things with their free time.
- mastercheif, on 10/12/2007, -7/+6Why is this being voted up? The point of buring is to bury "Cool" "great" "stupid" And all of the stuff we dont need to see.
BTW: Why is spell check not working? - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0How about some watermelon and red soda to go with that KFC?
