Potatoes May Hold Key To Alzheimer's Treatment
sciencedaily.com — A virus that commonly infects potatoes bears a striking resemblance to one of the key proteins implicated in Alzheimer's disease (AD), and researchers have used that to develop antibodies that may slow or prevent the onset of AD.

- orlando69, on 08/16/2008, -0/+26this sounds like a great lead into the treatment for Alzheimer's. I hope they do find a cure as it is another horrible disease that effects way too many people.
- zyklon, on 08/17/2008, -0/+4To me it's worse than a regular disease, because when an Alzheimer's-ridden person is in their death bed, they don't even know who you are. I normally joke about everything, but there is nothing worse in my eyes than watching someone die and they can't say they love you.
- RobotBuddha, on 08/17/2008, -0/+2Not only can't they say they love you, they don't even know they love you.

- subgeniusd, on 08/16/2008, -2/+10A potato virus??? This sounds like a story from the Onion.
Well whatever. If it helps in Alzheimer's treatment I applaud the discovery. This disease is becoming more not less prevalent and is the worst way to die IMHO. Slowly losing yourself until you become an empty shell....... - merimeet, on 08/16/2008, -2/+2Good thing I eat a lot of potatoes.

- spookyttws, on 08/17/2008, -2/+14I really don't understand why more doctors don't simply just hang out on Digg all day. I've seen Cancer cured, AIDs destroyed, Alzheimer's reversed, this is one hell of a site.

- Lynx55, on 08/17/2008, -5/+5All you people who continue to make jokes of the possibility of cures for diseases on here are just plain idiots. Make jokes until you or someone in your family or friends has something there is no cure for. Then see who is laughing. Shut the ***** up. The researchers are trying anything that may possibly be an answer. Why is that funny you morons? I pray for an answer every day for my illness, and every time a researcher tries something, anything, I cheer! Who knew mold would become penicillin for example? If you are not interested in the topic, just leave it alone. Those of us with illnesses ARE interested. My mother had Alzheimers and it was a horrid existence for all of us. Just go away, those of us serious about health research do not need your stupidity.
- missingship, on 08/17/2008, -1/+1Well, there is medication for bipolar disorder and it doesn't seem like you've taken your Prozac.
- sweetumssama, on 08/17/2008, -0/+0To be pedantic: Prozac is not for treating bipolar disorder.
- ripple123, on 08/17/2008, -1/+2grrr grrr angry grrr aaargh life is unfair grrr grrraaa the angry in my brain is causing my alzheimers grrr raaaa

- metapop, on 08/17/2008, -5/+1let's hope this cure is the right one guys... the McCain campaign has been let down every other time there's been a "cure" announced.
- DeFex, on 08/17/2008, -0/+2Earth people peeled their own potatoes boiled them for 20 of their minutes then smashed them all to bits.

- ripple123, on 08/17/2008, -1/+1you win the thread
- contradictator, on 08/17/2008, -0/+4Ah potatoes, a delicious food, a source of vodka, a catalyst for sack races AND a cure for Alzheimer's! Is there anything they can't do??
- Hodor, on 08/17/2008, -1/+1Well, it's not the potatoes that are the possible treatment. It's a bacteria that commonly infects potatoes.
So, I guess they can't cure Alzheimer's.

- Suriyawong, on 08/17/2008, -0/+0Guess the Irish are in good shape!
- Chrissy990, on 08/17/2008, -0/+2I don't care if this is another story about a cure that sounds far fetched. I am glad to hear that people have theories even if they turn out to be garbage theories. At least they are trying to cure this disease. Alzheimer's is scary and researchers should be trying everything they can and hopefully they will find something that works. If they don't do all of this research, they will never find the cure.
- Lewie, on 08/17/2008, -0/+1I like them french fried pertaters, mm hmm.
- ufia, on 08/17/2008, -0/+4If eating endangered species was the cure for Alzheimer, would you do it?
I know I would. Heck, I'd have seconds. And then I would polish it off with tall cool Budweiser. - whiteguysamurai, on 08/17/2008, -0/+1Ireland rejoices.
- DeuceDiggalow, on 08/17/2008, -2/+0I forgot what I was going to say
- rheaume, on 08/17/2008, -1/+2I ***** loooooove patates
- Mortiferous, on 08/17/2008, -0/+1I love baked potatoes with cheese, butter, and bacon bits. Been a while since I've had one. I usually resort to making them in the microwave out of laziness, but maybe someday soon with some motivation I'll do it the right way. I find you can almost simulate that oven cooked quality by wrapping the potato in a wet paper towel with salt on it. Don't forget to poke hole in the potato to help it steam and cook faster.
- samimnot, on 08/17/2008, -0/+0Hmm...seem to remember that a "potatoe" was the key to Dan Quayles political demise, also.
- Cannic, on 08/17/2008, -0/+0My Grandpa said he found the cure for Alzheimer's but then he forgot it. (Parumm pum)
- DivineMonkey, on 08/17/2008, -0/+1Bring on the Irish jokes.....(Braces self)
- troubleshot, on 08/17/2008, -0/+1i LOVE potatoes!
- M724, on 08/17/2008, -0/+1Try having mashed potatoes with some olive oil and/or vinegar (replace with whatever topping you like) and eat up.
- locojones, on 08/17/2008, -0/+5All the "oh no another cute article" morons need to quit being dicks and read the article. Nothing in this article sensationalized this as a cure. It was a straight-forward article that discussed the results of a study in mice. The amyloid protein found in the potato virus induced an anti-amyloid antibody response in mice, that's it. Extrapolating this to humans gives the possibility, and that's all, that a vaccine could be made to generate an immune response against the beta-amyloid plaque that doesn't have the nasty side effect of auto-immune encephalitis that has resulted from vaccines made from the protein itself in the past.
- liuite, on 08/17/2008, -0/+2in my opinion french fries would be one food I would associate with getting people sick, not getting them well. i don't think they are talking about eating the re-engineered spud to treat AD.
- Lysogen, on 08/17/2008, -0/+2This begs the question: What can't potatoes do?
- RadiatedAnt, on 08/17/2008, -0/+2Papa the fritas?
