Photos From French Nuclear Test, 1970
yourdailyawesome.com — These are four scanned pictures of hardcopies I possess of the French nuclear test codenamed Licorne, which was fired on August 24, 1970

- joessandwich, on 11/16/2007, -1/+13No *****, the guy clearly states that he attempted to restore them.
- AnalogCamera, on 11/17/2007, -5/+3People might use ps to restore pics, but technically they are not photoshops. RESTORATION! NOT PHOTOSHOPPATION!
- Charlotte_Web, on 11/17/2007, -1/+8Le Boom.

- ThatEvilGuy, on 11/17/2007, -0/+3wow indeed, Thanks a lot! these look awesome! and they're big and good quality too, that isn't usually isn't with case with many such posts.
I actually have a poster of the first picture, didn't know where and when it was taken, thanks! - masamunecyrus, on 11/17/2007, -1/+2Video:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8p9wcQ7Nfek - Locke2053, on 11/17/2007, -1/+2Yeah... if by "restore" you meant "added unrealistic color and brightness," then you are right. Otherwise, these are just exaggerations.
- xdeliriumx, on 11/17/2007, -0/+1No... he did not add the "unrealistic color". That's what it actually looks like.
- mikesbaker, on 11/17/2007, -1/+2***** you posses the hard copies - also I have the first one in 1650 * 1050 on my desk top - god i hate bloggers
- Dokument, on 11/16/2007, -22/+2photoshopped
- acidbass, on 11/16/2007, -13/+93This is Art.
How something can look almost beautiful yet be so utterly repulsive and disgusting at the same time.- KibibyteBrain, on 11/16/2007, -3/+34Oh, the French. Having to add an ironic, impeccably artistic existentialist flair to everything they do.
- CraigJ, on 11/16/2007, -11/+7Kinda like a picture of Paris Hilton.
- WolverineBlue, on 11/17/2007, -7/+5An atomic bomb could never compare to her sheer destructive potential.
- Buckiller, on 11/16/2007, -1/+6Reminds me of "Narcissus and Goldmund":
"there is such suffering in the beautiful delicate face, and at the same time all the suffering is also pure joy, a smile." - r00ts, on 11/16/2007, -6/+3The name is also very suiting. "Licorne" is French for "Unicorn".
- appleseed1234, on 11/17/2007, -2/+12How can such a generic and blatantly ripped from flickr comment receive so many diggs at the same time?
- ghostfish, on 11/17/2007, -12/+2Utterly repulsive? What makes you say that? Are you one of those people that are against the nuclear bombing of Japan?
- acidbass, on 11/17/2007, -8/+2Well... the only reason there were no war crime charges is b/c USA won.
- OneLess, on 11/17/2007, -3/+4Are you one of those people who think it was at all justified?
- ghostfish, on 11/17/2007, -3/+3Yup.
- Nerys, on 11/17/2007, -3/+5I am absolutely against the NUKING of japan. I think it was one of the worst things mankind has ever done. I think NUKING a city with a population is worse than what Hitler did. BUT it can be morally and historically justified. UNLIKE what Hitler did.
I also think it was NEEDED. I also think the nuking of japan oddly enough has SAVED mankind from a much earlier extinction. I think the Nuking of Japan is the ONLY reason we never had a Nuclear WWIII or "final war" to this point.
You see as horrible as it was NUKING japan TWICE (twice is important) REMOVED any doubt whatsoever that this was theory and was now infact hard grained into very very ugly reality. It was no longer theoretical. It was crystal clear just how horrible these weapons are.
I think that alone and the fact that countries as a whole are not insane is the only reason we have never had a nuclear war. Those nukings made a hypothesis very dark and clear. NO ONE survives a nuclear war. Consider that a single Nimitz class aircraft carrier contains 2.2 times the firepower of ALL of WWII BOTH SIDES including the nukes.
Why was nuking them twice important? Once means we could still delude ourselves. It was a fluke. Twice makes it pretty clear THIS is what these weapons do. NO questions about it.- sabach, on 11/17/2007, -1/+2If we hadn't nuked Japan it would be a colony of Russia today.
- AtomicTank, on 11/17/2007, -1/+2On the contrary, I'm not disgusted in the least. This is the epitome of the potential of human intelligence: harnessing the power of the atom itself and doing something that only occurs naturally in the core of the sun. Maybe its more than that, too. Maybe its the need to seek things beyond what we already know that brought about these monsters. Regardless, way in the back in the skulls of every person who sees proof of something like that, especially one captured so artfully, will feel at least some spark of sheer awe in the face of what we as a species are capable of.
But whatever. The cake is a lie, etc...- acidbass, on 11/17/2007, -0/+1Ah, sounds like you just read the 2nd half of my post and ignored the 1st. (you're not the 1st on this comment thread)
In the first half of the sentence you chose to cherry pick and parse it goes like this:
"How something can look almost beautiful "
I think i make clear reference to the beauty and awe of nuclear weapons, but dont let that get in the way, you have a one-sided agenda to push on others and feel good about. - oheyCWU, on 11/18/2007, -0/+0Yeah, actually what's goin on in these photos is nuclear fission, not nuclear fusion. Fusion is what goes on in the sun and what creates all the other elements out of Hydrogen...learn science plz.
- acidbass, on 11/17/2007, -0/+1Ah, sounds like you just read the 2nd half of my post and ignored the 1st. (you're not the 1st on this comment thread)
- lucidguru, on 11/16/2007, -12/+12The French took better photos than most of the blurry American ones I've seen. Maybe that's just the restoration however.
- fishgeekva, on 11/16/2007, -2/+29these were taken in the 70's, not the 40's like a lot of the American pics.
- Motodog, on 11/17/2007, -3/+4Maybe that's photoshopped. BS, the French can't pull that off.
- natdowner, on 11/16/2007, -7/+13yeah, all you can say is wow when you look at those. They're beautiful images, unfortunately of something that's not really so nice lol. But those are certainly amazing photos.
- Nerys, on 11/17/2007, -0/+4A Nuclear explosion is no more intrinsically ugly or evil than a bullet is. WHAT ITS USED for is whats ugly. Our Star gives us LIFE nd it essentially one gigantic billions of years long nuclear explosion of a scale our minds can not comprehend. A nuke might stop an asteroid from killing us one day. Nuking Japan may very well have stopped us from nuking each other out of existance.
ONLY Sentient Creatures do ugly/evil things.

- Tyrghast, on 11/17/2007, -1/+1same. except this is the exact same link that was on here 2 months ago when i first saw my current desktop.
- Nerys, on 11/17/2007, -0/+1Thats nice. I have been using dig DAILY for over a year now and I never saw these links. THANK YOU whoever reposted this dupe again I appreciate it.

- doublehead, on 11/16/2007, -6/+1awesome pics
- bigthree, on 12/03/2007, -20/+3wow - is testing really necessary at this point -- don't they know what they will do by now?
- CrazyMorax, on 11/16/2007, -7/+1lol I guess, kinda agressive..
- Frei, on 11/16/2007, -1/+181970
- huskerdude, on 11/16/2007, -4/+2Maybe it's research for their time machine...
- shanelw24, on 11/17/2007, -3/+2they dont test to find out what the bomb will do, they test the technology. the explosions that compress the nuclear material have to be precise and in sync down to the millisecond.
- kageki, on 11/17/2007, -1/+2It may surprise you that they were testing these until the 90s.
- DeviantDragon, on 11/16/2007, -13/+4Duplicate from about month ago which was duplicated a couple weeks ago and probably first submitted before the first article that I cite as this being a duplicate of. It's nice, I had it as my desktop, but it's still a dupe and I must bury.
- pault107, on 11/17/2007, -0/+1Yeah, we know. Look up ^^^
You're just duping their comments. It's redundant. Stop it.

- DarkDx, on 11/16/2007, -10/+5The most ***** thing is that digg actually shows you if the article is already submited, ***** those who ignore it.
- hydrodev, on 11/17/2007, -2/+8yea, that is the most ***** thing. I agree.
- RedRummy, on 11/17/2007, -1/+1what is the least ***** thing then?

Digg and flickr are awfully generic today.- RedRummy, on 11/17/2007, -0/+3you [synonym of abuse/offense].

- Killbot2015, on 11/17/2007, -8/+3Okay first of all this wasn't 1970 it was 1968 (small error) and second, it wasn't a French nuclear test it was an American nuclear test photographed my the French (big error).
- Sokkratez, on 11/17/2007, -0/+2I think you mean "by the French" (small error).
- falafelkiosken, on 11/17/2007, -5/+1wow, so beautiful yet horrifying. the last one looks like a popcorn

- MadN, on 11/17/2007, -1/+1Much better than throwing cows from the castle.....
/Your mother smelt of elderberries..... - Pinkertinkle, on 11/17/2007, -6/+1Looks like a photoshop. The french couldn't nuke my popcorn, let alone a pacific island.
- londubh, on 11/17/2007, -4/+6So who is going to call them "cheese eating surrender monkeys" now?
- coredump0x01, on 11/17/2007, -1/+3In all fairness, the bottom half of this one still looks like a huge nuclear wang: http://www.yourdailyawesome.com/wp-content/uploads ...
- xmlsteve, on 11/17/2007, -0/+2Don't forget: there is scientific proof that these tests caused increased cancer for any island residents living within 1000 miles of the tests.

- DogNo7, on 11/17/2007, -2/+3I love the smell of Uranium in the morning.
It smells like...
Victory. - Kinsbane, on 11/17/2007, -2/+3The last one is nuts. It honestly looks like a mushroom, a giant deadly fungus spreading throughout the air.
The fact that mankind has created something so devastating should be a testament against its use under any circumstances. - Konrad9, on 11/17/2007, -1/+1I've got a 4 foot poster of the first image... kinda wish it was of the second one, though.
- kageki, on 11/17/2007, -0/+5So tired of seeing pics of the explosion. Yes they are quite extraordinary pictures, but those pictures alone does not adequately show the true consequence of a nuclear bomb. Like it's ability to completely obliterate everything in it's path:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:Hiroshima_after ...- acidbass, on 11/17/2007, -0/+1That picture pisses Dick Cheney off b/c theres still a few buildings left standing.
- ItsMyWii, on 11/17/2007, -1/+1That first one is now my wallpaper.
