Parasitic worm creates "Zombies" - the most fascinating life cycle ever
michaelcastellon.blogspot.com — This video shows how parasitic flat worms take over snail's minds, forcing them to become birdfood, and one of the most fascinating and bizarre life cycles found in nature.

- Pother, on 10/12/2007, -5/+10Shh...
Better watch out.
Don't give corporate executives any ideas...
"So you'd like to work for us? No problem..."- najdorf, on 10/12/2007, -1/+29Hmm, looks like Digg users have some morbid fascination for this kind of stories...
- Wilcox, on 10/12/2007, -2/+14Wow, I just felt bad for a snail.
Only on digg... - rasterbator, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9looks like i picked the wrong day to stop eating bird turds.
- purpleeggguy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6I was just eating a bag of gummy bears as i opened the link.....Now I'm squishy food intolerant.

- acff, on 10/12/2007, -1/+24i can't imagine a ***** way to exist
- ZeroMP, on 10/12/2007, -1/+12Why wouldn't the submitter of this article just link to the YouTube video instead of some crappy blog that can barely load under a little stress from Digg?
The only reason I can think of is if you were spamming your own crappy blog, so at this point I have to ask: mynickel - are you Micheal Castellon? - blackjack75, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Or maybe he posted the video himself and talked about it on his blog, while hosting the video remotely...
- tralalaa, on 10/12/2007, -10/+10hahahaha
This, along with the wasp stories, are repost classics!
Great job into making it front page again :)- Tiak, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7I think they're going for the record.
- TheCount, on 10/12/2007, -6/+44I love how people talk about stories that already made it to the front page like everyone reads and is aware of every single story to make it to digg's front page in the history of digg. Just let it go man, it's okay.
- socalrob, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7If this was a re-post, first time I've seen it...
But 2 zombie bug posts in one day... damn.... Maybe its some zombie PC or some zombie Digg user doing the repost, spreading its post among thousands of Digg users all over the internet, to be re-read and re-posted again....
Damn zombie parasite bastards! - contextclouds, on 10/12/2007, -0/+12Here are some more zombie classics:
brainwashed cricket that drowns itself because of parasites.

And another one about a fungus that infects ants.

Haha, I'm fine with it. There's a bunch of people who resubmit the same stories just to see if people digg em up - purely for laughs. Also mainly because of the "Hey, I haven't seen it yet!" crowd.
You can do it too. Pick any popular story within the 365 days (the older the better), and resubmit it. Watch the diggs rack up.
This just happens to be one that's been done about.. 5 times already, the last few times with 100% intention of "watch these people digg it up again" :)
I'm not complaining, I'm just amused since this particular one AND the classic wasp article BOTH hit front page today within a few hours. There's a good 20 stories that routinely make the rounds and users are just totally unaware of ;) - Elranzer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6I'm sure the ebaumsworld watermarks on those videos are justified. He came up with that content, right?
- catfish182, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1watch now those links will be posted and on the front page.
wow thats funny
someone should make a fake page and post it in the comments to see who posts it.
- drunkjack, on 10/12/2007, -6/+9I repeat my call for a "That's ***** Gross!" bury option.
You geeky weirdos.- m0laria, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8Don't knock it till you tried it.
- bexy4506, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3I think the title was misleading. I get so excited when i see the word "Zombies" in any title but this was just a let down...
- mortigon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Don't worry. We are 1 step closer to a Resident Evil city....
Get my shotgun! There's zombies outside! - Azap, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10I agree, it was pretty amazing but when I see zombies, I want flesh pealing mindless killing machines.
I need a bumper sticker that says " I Digg for Zombies" - mortigon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Remember... Remove the head or destroy the brain. I repeat, by removing the head, or destroying the brain...
- mortigon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Don't worry. We are 1 step closer to a Resident Evil city....
- meetthescott, on 10/12/2007, -0/+17I stopped eating maggots for just this reason.
- LizardSlayer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I would also caution against eating cat *****: http://www.dmacc.cc.ia.us/instructors/human.htm

- d2htornado, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Hey, isn't that the concept of Dead Rising?
- pigsbladder, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2nature never ceases to amaze
- stopple, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6just be glad these arent the new fast zombie snails we are seeing in movies
- wargod18, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Yes because those things move at a whopping 1.5 MPH they are so deadly. Watch out ot it might get your pet turtle.
- TheCount, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8If I saw a snail moving 1.5 miles an hour, I'd be more than a little worried.
- Devrdander, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5If you like that check out:

- UxPx, on 10/12/2007, -4/+1This was in the BBC headlines a nearly 2 years ago.
/me diggs story about car that can run on vegetable oils.
Did you hear Mr. Bush was re-elected?
good job diggers- popfrogs, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Steps to Digg front page success TM:
1. Find an interesting yet ancient story
2. Post a link to it on your blog or summarize since it's so old the original site doesn't have it anymore
3. Don't worry about including pictures; remember, reading is about using the imagination. - coolbru, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1> Did you hear Mr. Bush was re-elected?
What do you mean "re-"?
- popfrogs, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Steps to Digg front page success TM:
- PunkHop, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9What is with all the "parasites turning their hosts into zombies" posts, and why do I LOVE this stuff so much?
The worms in the crickets, the wasps riding the cockroaches, and these snails... this stuff is freaking fascinating.
There should be a Digg section called "awesome parasitic brainwashing chemical-injecting bugs"... it would be my front page. - HeatVision, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10Mother Nature is one morbid bitch.
- techguy521, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Man.... that really sucks, lol. Just hope that one day it doesn't get to humans and just have us wander off into a forest to be eaten by a bear or something.....
- Misfitpierce, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Crazy stuff
- mortigon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I love the advertisment on the side.
Parasites in Humans
Find out why every
second Americans will
get chronically ill.
Get well now!
FEAR THE PARASITES!- PlagueMonkey, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0EARWIGS!! Eeeewww.
- keegan3d, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Ahh worms and parasites are soo scary, growing inside you and what not...
I am soo glad I had an appointment for my dog today, all these parasite stories on digg today are freak-in me out.
But they are cool :) - wargod18, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1This is exactly what happens to men when we get married. A girl might not be able to inject something into your head but they still force you to do stuff you don't want to, seems parasitic to me.
- popngen, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2I've been trying to find some way to turn this into a religious debate but it's not happening.
- nathanwalker, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Heh, yeerks
- Sanchez, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2And then they post on digg defending their operating system/video game console/program of choice.
- BillGod, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Holy crap turn on some discovery channel every once in a while! They have shown the same special with these parasites for 2 years.
- Falc, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2i smell a lead story on diggnation next week!!!
- fishfishfish, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2A similar kind of thing happens with a fish parasite called the eye fluke, Diplostomum spathaceum. This beast lives on the eyes of fish, but also spends part of its life cycle inside fish-eating birds, such as gulls.
In order to ensure that it can get inside the bird's gut, it needs to make the fish more likely to be eaten by a bird - which it does by triggering the development of cataracts. See here: http://www.practicalfishkeeping.co.uk/pfk/pages/item.php?news=936
That said, I still think that parasites that castrate their hosts are a little more gruesome. These are also seen in the fish world: http://www.practicalfishkeeping.co.uk/pfk/pages/item.php?news=1096 - heffae, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Suddenly I favor unreasonably huge subsidies to the brain slug planet
- loquax, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1In a related process, scientists discovered that pop music has a similar effect upon human beings....
- vforvigilante, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I remember reading about these guys in Resident Evil 4.
- matriculated, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Bleech! Why do I feel so itchy now?
- smartass007, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0more evidence that nature is evil and wrong
- Angostura, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1If you find this disturbing, don't research the effects of toxoplamosis on humans.
- SpenceMasta, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0all these articles about mind altering worms keeps reminding me of resident evil 4
- DukeVonMan, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1this whole story could be summed up in one word: ugh.
- kingstarscream, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1So the parasites didn't actually turn the snail into a "zombie" like the title says? And why was the bird not "zombified"?
- SocketNine3Nine, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Imagine Humans being infected, we will try to clib a little plant and squash it instead, When did little freaks get so smart?
- stlblw4d, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0OMG! SNAP! This is exactly my ex-boss Judy Linn.
- 4UIDigg, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1grotesque, but interesting
- Shenaniganz08, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0yeah its not really a zombie, but it sure is cool/freaky
- MrTsLoveChild, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1not a single reply burried?!?
let's get to work here people. we have a reputation to uphold. - capellathestar, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Snails have brains?!
