I knew it! Every time I drive and zone out while listening to music I drive perfectly, and when I reach my destination, I'm sometimes like "Uh, how'd I get here?" Anyone else ever done the same thing? - superfusion, on 12/25/2008, -7/+96So, that's why I'm having sex with my mashed potatoes?
- inactive, on 12/24/2008, -1/+54Play WoW or meet people in r/l?
- Ysabetwordsmith, on 12/25/2008, -3/+56Teachers have known this long since. One of the first things I learned about doing well on a test is that, if you don't consciously know the answer to a question, put down your *first* reaction. You'll still miss some, but you'll hit more correct answers trusting your instincts than if you second-guess yourself.
- shoppingkart, on 12/25/2008, -4/+55You are unconsciously digging me up...
- akchrs, on 12/25/2008, -1/+46My unconscious brain makes all my choices.
- Racer20, on 12/25/2008, -0/+43A semi-related interesting tidbit I heard on NPR today . . .
There was a guy who went blind as an adult due to some damage to the cortex, which is the part of the brain that processes what the eyes "see" and gives us our conscious sense of sight. So technically, his eyes still worked, but he didn't see anyting because his brain didn't process the information in a way that was conscious to him.
Some researchers did an experiment where they asked him to walk down a straight hallway, but they DIDN'T tell him that there were several differently sized obstacles placed randomly along the hallway such as a construction cone or a stack of newspapers.
They were quite surprised when he was able to walk down the hallway, altering his path to completely avoid the obstacles, without having any prior knowledge of their presence. When they asked him how he knew not to just walk in a straight line, he didn't know. They actually found that he wasn't even aware that he DIDN'T walk in a straight line.
The point is that even though his conscious mind couldn't process the signals from his eyes, deeper parts of his brain were still "seeing" unconsciously, and still other parts were reacting unconsciously to that information. - diggpoop, on 12/24/2008, -4/+46Don't let rapists get word of this.

- refreshers, on 12/25/2008, -0/+25All the time...
Is that a bad thing? - splorpdotorg, on 12/25/2008, -1/+25When I delivered pizzas, I once had a scary occurrence. I was a good 3 miles from the pizza shop and had no idea how I got there. I checked the address on the pizza and discovered I was almost at my destination. I had fallen asleep and driven 2-3 miles completely on auto-pilot.
OK, I lied. Something even scarier was when I was 18 and delivered for KFC (test market) to a 30 year old woman's birthday party. She was blitzed out of her mind and kept asking "I'm still pretty, aren't I?" and inviting me in "Come on in, I'll show you a good time!" No, and you're scaring the hell out of me. I was never more thankful than when her friends pulled her back into the house. - bg2500, on 12/24/2008, -1/+24Let me sleep on that.
- juniorb, on 12/25/2008, -0/+19This is actually a physiological theory that stretches back more than 3,000 years. The root purpose of meditation is to release the brain from the grip of the ego and allow the body to operate subconsciously (to put it simply). Talk to great martial artists, athletes, musicians: the whole purpose of the practice is to later forget it and just perform. That's what the Buddha called "right action." Action that moves as quickly and deftly as reality, not slowed down by conscious reasoning.
Interesting to read about a scientific paper that seems to reinforce ancient mysticism. - meean, on 12/25/2008, -2/+19Masturbate or find a real girl?
- MadThrasher, on 12/25/2008, -0/+16I think they should do more research on this one...

- Devotia, on 12/25/2008, -0/+13i have the exact opposite effect early in the morning. From the time alarm goes off until I get in the shower, the only part of my brain giving signals is the "Tell the body anything to stay in bed" part.
- dronkmunk, on 12/25/2008, -1/+13And then I whistled for a cab and when it came near...

- hyderalamgir, on 12/25/2008, -1/+10I knew that... the problem is, it just won't freakin' listen to me!
- ThanatosST, on 12/25/2008, -0/+9Thus works until you hit the point in college that your reading comprehension has dropped so low due to lack of sleep that you don't correctly read the question.
Knowing if the particle they're talking about is an electron or proton makes a hell of a lot of difference in a multiple choice test... - dhughes, on 12/25/2008, -0/+9 I've experienced this, I'm better at Math if I just do it don't think about it but it's very hard to do and most of the time it happens when I'm in a rush and just blurt of a response. The other time is early in the morning, two possible situations, when my clock radio goes off and they are talking about math or numbers I can find the result without any effort the other time I remember was when there was lightning and I remebered the formula to calculate the distance (seconds between booms, speed of sound taking temp into account, convert from miles to km etc.) and knew it was 1.7 miles away!
- steviesteveo, on 12/25/2008, -0/+8To be fair, I'm sure you were doing the best with the information you had available.
Unfortunately that information may have been "Oh, that statue isn't that high at all" and "Whoa, I bet she's a model" - TheTCal, on 12/25/2008, -0/+8whine or keep mouth shut?
- fudicka, on 12/25/2008, -1/+9I can think of a few poor choices made while blacked out on booze.
- doctordbx, on 12/25/2008, -0/+8Hell yes, I can't remember half of my college days due to sleep deprevation.
The worst thing is the susbequent years got harder, and more and more sleep was lost, so much the only thing I can remember of my finals was the glorious 20 minute power nap I had before my final exam.
Ahh... what a lovely nap it was... brings back fond memories... of napping. - Shiftgood, on 12/25/2008, -3/+10I always think I make more level headed decisions or get a better outside perspective when im stoned. I wonder if there is a correlation.
- zephc, on 12/25/2008, -2/+9Lao Tzu could have told you that. I suggest googling 'wu wei'

- HimThatSpeaks, on 12/25/2008, -0/+5I knew it. Time to convince my employer. As I understand this, I will have to get him to agree in his sleep so he can make the best choice. Perhaps with five minutes of coaching before he makes the decision. "Bob needs to sleep at work... Bob needs to sleep at work..."
- Lane, on 12/25/2008, -0/+5This makes perfect sense to me, i cant tell you how many times ive had the greatest idea JUST before falling asleep or right after waking up. thats why I sleep with my subnotebook handy.

http://abcnews.go.com/Technology/story?id=97628&am ... - Brassbud, on 12/25/2008, -0/+4Reading through the Wikipedia entries on their work I am confident I have absolutely no idea what their theories stated. I don't really get the whole insurance and lottery ticket thing, since I've never played the lottery and expect to get a ~100,000:1 return on all insurances I'm not legally required to have.
Do you know of any materials I should look at since this seems to be a very matter-of-fact issue. - donpdonp, on 12/25/2008, -0/+4The outcome of research changed from one result to the opposite result. Is the moral of the story that the process of research is flawed?
- thebrinkman, on 12/25/2008, -0/+4Our brains know so much more than we do.
