- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10How many genes separate me from the guy who thought his "40 jeans" joke was funny?
- stonebear, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Misconceptions about wolves have led people to believe they are more unique than they are. They are really just another variety of dog. That they are separate species is taxologically dubious, and probably a relic from the questionable zoology of the early part of the last century.
Humans are only 200 (or so) genes away from the goofy chimp, yet we like to think of ourselves as radically different. Though many of those 200 genes are bound to be significant (even warranting their own chromosome), in the absence of our pretentions we are really just a particularly intelligent and vicious type of ape. - colelt1, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Also it depends on the "husky." I have a 11 month old pure bread Siberian husky: http://www.splak.net/montana/
He is a dog, "looks" more like a wolf that other dogs, but does not share the same traits that separates a wolf from a dog. There are many traits that all wolves have that differ from dogs, like female wolves have only 1 menstrual cycle a year.
There is a "Alaskan Husky" (hybrid), and is really a hybrid/mutt, is not recognized by breader associations, which is a Siberian husky, wolf, and Irish setter mix. The Alaskan husky is rated on their "wolf" content, which is really impossible to tell without DNA testing, but people aim for a certain percent, like 33% or so. An Alaskan husky can look like a 100% wolf, 100% dog, or anything in between, and be genetically mostly dog or wolf, and have the temperament of a wolf or a dog. So you never know what you are getting, and these hybrids are not the best pets depending on what you end up with. They were bread for racing and have more endurance than Siberians. - phbradley, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"Hell, look at the difference between men and woman and we are only separated by 1/2 a gene..."
you muppet, they differ by a whole chromosome! - A5204, on 08/13/2009, -1/+1Yeah, but add an indian burial ground into the mix and genes don't mean a damn thing.
- stugots, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0so what does the 40 genes do to make the wolf different from the domesticated dog? i adopted a full blooded timberwolf around 9 years ago, except for his rather impressive howling he acts no different than my other dogs, not agressive at all, in fact he's the big baby of the pack.
- ever, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Only 40 different genes make my dog hump the pillow and drink beer in secret. 40 genes that make him desire the leg of the lady living next door.
Come to think of it, 40 genes make a huge difference. - frogman54, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0This is one of the dumbest stories if only because the people writing it seem to be surprised. Wolves and dogs are closely related...NO *****! I knew that when I was 4. Someone probably spent millions of tax dollars to figure this out.
- Neptuned, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0im willing to bet that a beagel is a few more pairs off.
- Bimmer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Well, if this dosen't kick some more life into the 'nature' vs 'nurture' debate on behaviors....
- warmonger48, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Technically they are the same species: they can breed and produce fertile offspring. When you look at genes: 40 is nothing...
- Xinex, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0uh, so? we're only different from some monkeys by 3% of our DNA.
- diggnationdevon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+040 genes isn't much, it actually is quite impressive.
- ejsl23, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Humans are very similar to dogs as well. I once heard the actual numbers, but I've forgotten them. This article should suffice. http://news.nationalgeographic.com/news/2003/09/0925_030925_doggenes.html
- grendel, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0thanks i'll sleep better tonight
- zatrix, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0since when has 40 been a small number?
- spect3r, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I read in Darwin's Ghost that a domesticated dog is also 1/10th as intelligent as it's evolutionary father, the wolf.

Doesn't happen often, but there are documentated cases of wolves attacking a person. For instance, earlier this month:
http://www.cbc.ca/sask/story/wolf-attack051110.html - AeonTorpor, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Less than 3% I believe.
- warmonger48, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Grodius: huskies just have phenotypes that are similar to wolves. They could be actually be more distance than, for example, a German Shepard. Again, in a biological sense dogs, wolves, and coyotes are the same species.
- Grodius, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0My dog is a huskey, is it more of a wolf than most?
- dptechie, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0.1% is the difference between humans and monkeys
.01% is the difference between each other
So I'm not that sure that 40 genes is too impressive.
(Also Big Bad Wolf isn't correct seeing as there has never been a documented attack of a wolf on a human) - freonchill, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0humans are closer to dogs and wolfs ?!
wtf - wireloose, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"my chihuahua is only 40 genes shy of a wolf?"
Yes, all size "large." - Linuxrocks, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Wait dogs and wolves are related??? WTF I DIDNT KNOW THEY WERE EVEN CLOSE AT ALL. I mean they don't look like eachother.
- jhaven, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0my chihuahua is only 40 genes shy of a wolf?
heh. - sotloo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Hmmmmmm so what is the genetic difference between the RIAA and horse’s ass?
- altidude, on 10/12/2007, -0/+04 genes would be impressive. 40 genes? Meh.
- dj_sea2005, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"only 10 genes seperate a human from a banana."
QI anyone? :D - piggy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Man I hope someone makes another jean/gene joke. That never gets old.
- warmonger48, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Stone: Well said. I would have to say that dogs are a variety of wolf though.
- egorgry, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I have a husky and he's a wild mutha. I'd say he is as close to wolf as you can get. he's barking in my ear right now because he wants my pizza.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1only 10 genes seperate a human from a banana.
- KidVicious, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0"only 10 genes seperate a human from a banana."
lol - rohcky, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Beagles make my ears bleed with their painful howling. This story not that interesting. Now if they had pictures of cuddly pups... then I'd digg.
- slhilbert, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0What about White Fang?
-s
http://www.getyourowntots.com - Moose_Head, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0I could once fit 40 chihuahuas in my jeans...
... not really. - warmonger48, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0In the schema of the whole genone 40 is nothing, but their expression does make a world of difference. Hell, look at the difference between men and woman and we are only separated by 1/2 a gene...
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0...meh
thats kind of a lot
no digg - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0my dog wears 41 jeans...
