OUCH!!! A Dog After Its Fight With a Porcupine - Pics

- punk90, on 10/12/2007, -2/+114Did Homeward Bound come to mind to anyone else?
- dantidote, on 10/12/2007, -2/+18haha yeah, Chance got pwned by the porcupine then they ended up in some dog hispital, but of course they all broke out. When we were waiting to get cable TV installed, this was one of the very few movies we had. Watched it over and over...
- dunezone, on 10/12/2007, -0/+53And here is the Snopes article on it
http://www.snopes.com/photos/animals/porcupinedog.asp - Rorrim, on 10/12/2007, -67/+9Did someone try to stop the dog?
It's horrible and sadistic of people to be making jokes about this :(
Yet, it does seem stupid and rash of the dog to keep going after the porcupine. - randomvictim, on 10/12/2007, -1/+75@Rorrim
Have you ever tried to stop a pit bull from attacking another animal? I think not. - kelbear, on 10/12/2007, -10/+1Probably blind at this point.
- lostboy, on 10/12/2007, -4/+18gotta agree with randomvictim. However this is an English Bull Terrier not a pit bull.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bull_Terrier
I've had one, and they aren't necessarily dangerous animals if raised properly, however they are unstoppable machines of terrifying inertia. Seriously, once they get going they do not stop. If you need to get any kind of Terrier, be it staff, pitbull or English bull terrier off something like another dog try drowning it. Pour water down it's throat if you can, that's about the only thing that will make it stop once it locks it's jaw. Or sticking your finger up it's ass (seriously), but few people are gonna choose that one are they.
They look like sharks from the side, with their bizarre heads, but are awesome animals. The only dog I like more are staffordshire bull terriers. - TravisG5, on 10/12/2007, -4/+3Wow... this dog is crazy. I doubt all those came from one hit of the porcupine... what a brave dog to go back and fight it.
That vet must have had a hard time removing all those. - wobitnobby, on 10/12/2007, -1/+43Poor sweetie. I worked in a veterinary ER for a year and several times helped to pluck quills after an altercation like this... the sad thing seems to be that the dogs don't learn, and a dog once quilled will often chase another porcupine. The thought was that maybe the quills don't hurt much until several minutes later and so they don't connect it?
The only thing to do was to sedate the dog, gather as many techs as you can, and get going with blunt forceps to pull them out. If he didn't get a quill in the eye, he may be in more danger from the quills in the shoulder area. At the microscopic scale, they are scaled and rough in one direction, smooth in the other - so they will work their way deeper and deeper, disappearing into the flesh. If they are missed in the first cleanup they may be later found to pierce the heart or cause pockets of infection before coming out the other side! - validius, on 10/12/2007, -18/+4stupid pooch deserved it.
- AriaStar, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6Bull terrier, not a pit. I worked at an animal hospital and we had a dog come in that had about two dozen quills. All I've got to say is that I couldn't stay in the building when they were being pulled. The yelping made me sick to my stomach. The dog in these photos I hope was sedated. She'll be lucky if she wasn't blinded.
And before anyone goes off saying she attacked the porcupine, more likely she went up and sniffed it, and it felt threatened and attacked her, and she fought back. - kingfoot, on 10/12/2007, -0/+17I thought it was a pic of the porcupine at first, until I realized there was a dog under all them needles.
- ricksite, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4lostboy, thanks for the tips on getting a pit bull to stop once it locks its jaws. What about when it flys or turns invisible, do you have any tips on dealing with that? Don't think a pit bull can fly or turn invisible? You seem to believe they can lock their jaws which isn't true. http://www.pitbulllovers.com/american-pit-bull-terrier-myths.html
- G-RaZoR, on 10/12/2007, -0/+13Anybody have pics of the dog after the needles were removed?
- lostboy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3nah i don't believe they can lock their jaws, i meant that more in the sense that it's ***** hard to get them to release when they've decided to bite something. On one occasion my bull terrier - now dead ;( - was attacked by Labrador. He didn't want a fight but didn't really have a choice and ended up with his jaw wrapped around the other dogs throat. We happened to be in someone's back garden so we used a hose which we squirted down my dogs throat. He definitely wasn't keen on that and let go.
- nixr, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10Please tell me that dog's name is Spike.
Poor fella. - TheCount, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1"Have you ever tried to stop a pit bull from attacking another animal? I think not."
Have you? I doubt it.
That's actually a Bull Terrier (I'd think you'd know that... you know, from your extensive experience breaking up pit bull attacks), a completely different breed, this image has been circulating for quite some time and often gets misidentified. - blake_ivey, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2@radomvictum
Have you ever tried to stop a pit bull from attacking another animal? I think not.
In fact. I have stopped an American Put Bull Terrier from attacking another animal. Me and my cousin were clearing our tons of trees and such that had fallen after a snowstorm and all of a sudden a cat darted out from no where. Our dog was instantly chasing it and what seemed only moments seemed to have it by the neck. It happened all so quick that it took us a moment to get to the two animals, but soon broke the two up by giving firm "no" commands (he calmed down tremendously after the no commands but still would not let go) and using a break-stick to release his grip.
Like many dogs, this dog use to be raised for dog fighting (dogs aggressive to humans were put down since a dog fight back then consisted of the owners breaking the fight up after one dog submitted. Though cruel back then, it is much better then dog fights nowadays where people don't care what happens to the dog and it fights to the death.) and also people had them, not to fight, but as family members that would go out on a hunt and watch over the children (The breed use to be known as the "nanny") as well. Many of these dogs have a high prey instinct.
It seems like the owner wasn't even there to see what happened because I would have been separating the two instantly...even if I had to beat the porcupine with a stick.
These dogs are not monsters. They were once loved by the country and actually chosen to represent the US during world war one and two. I suggest yall look up Sgt. Stubby. He saved his platoon (or was it company?) several times and even caught a German spy single handedly.
Here are 10 facts about this breed from pitbulllovers.com: http://www.pitbulllovers.com/pit-bulls-ten-things-you-should-know.html - blake_ivey, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Hmm kinda messed that last comment it up. many dogs were not raised to fight, sorry. Was typing in a hurry and just read over it quick.
- mrpacco, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Not so much Homeward Bound, more like Hellraiser (you know: Pinhead).
- tomvale13, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2As an owner of a Pure Bred Miniature Bull Terrier I can say that these dogs are amongst the most loyal, unique and character-filled animals a man could own.
My little fat man is just over 1 year old now and Is the friendliest most adorable little fella but yeah, when he see's food just try and stop him..
Wonderful animals, As for staffy's: they're a dime a dozen. Get a Bully. :)
- karbonx, on 10/12/2007, -3/+70you should see the porcupine........
- fasda, on 10/12/2007, -0/+104god I wish there were pics I've never see a bald porcupine.
- DAVIDPOWERZ, on 10/12/2007, -30/+1digg him down...copied from the link!
its a sad day when people cant even thnk of their own comments.... - sanman, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6Frankly, I don't like any breed of dog that's bred for aggression. That makes them a ticking time-bomb, because their behavior is genetically selected for aggression. So let's cut the crap about "ohh, mine's so nice, and they're unfairly vilified."
Animals can't defy their genes. Hell, even humans have a hard time -- just ask families of alcoholics. But if an animal is deliberately bred for aggression and blood-lust, it's a severe risk. Ask Siegfield & Roy, after their Vegas tiger show got canceled due to that attack. - aikahanyou, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1DAMMIT! I was just about to post that! D:
But seriously though, I wonder what the porcupine would look like. - tomvale13, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1@ SANMAN
You're an idiot.
Dogs bred for aggression..?
The percentage of Pit Bulls that are aggressive per hundred is lower than the average for all other dog types.
Add that witht he fact that this is a BULL TERRIER and your statement starts to seem even sillier. Bull Terriers are known as the "Gentle Giants" of the Dog world. Do you possibly think that the reason people have such issues with these dogs is becasue who the Fu(K gives a sh!t when a chihahua bites a toddler? No one cos the toddler screams, the chihahua gets booted and SLATA! Its all over. With Pit Bulls and Bull Terriers say that an owner has raised a dog for hunting or for whatever reason one of these types of dogs does attack a human, It's going to be more serious not because fo their NATURE but because THEY ARE FU(KING STRONG. Everyone can run aaround screaming blue murder but the BULL TERRIER will NEVER BE BANNED. There are no facts that support the theories behind the "Viscous Nature" rumours attached to these breeds. PIT BULLS were banned in many places around the world mainly because of their success as fighting dogs. The sport of dog fighting being one of the most inhumane acts of the modern world has no place; and to stress the serious banning of acts of this nature the Pit Bull was a casualty. Most Dogs characteristics are pre-determined on factors not pertaining to BREED SPECIFICS. Sorry for the rant but I grew up with these dogs and have seen little fuzz balls in every old ladies house that are more dangerous to young children and the like.
Get a clue, please. - Klaumbaz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1@tomvale13
Dugg down for gaming the profanity filter.
- MarkCiccone, on 10/12/2007, -3/+25Oh man that poor dog, what a horrible job for the vet!!!
- d3c0yn4m3l355, on 10/12/2007, -4/+0Whats so horrible about it? Just give the dog a shot and problem solved. These bastards are in most places of the world banned for a good reason. Ever seen one of these bastards attack a child or another animal? The biggest problem though with these dogs isn't so much their behaviour but the bosses, ussually some fkking pikeys.
Nah i don't feel sorry for the dog, i feel sorry for the critter this bastard attacked, and I hope the vet is wise and just puts an end on this one.

Wow, reeaaal humorous.. not. I feel bad for that dog.- wingnut21, on 10/12/2007, -5/+58I find it funny that you'll see a story posted about a human dieing in a stupid manner, and people will post "LOL DARWIN AWARD!! HE DESRVED IT!!!!"
Then, when a dog, obviously as dumb as a rock doesn't get the message, people feel incredible sorry for it. What, you'd rather see an innocent porcupine get chomped to bits for no reason? The dog asked for every single needle in its face.
(Disclaimer, I'm not saying you specifically would laugh at Darwin award recipients... I'm just addressing the people that would. Also, I'm a dog lover.) - kelbear, on 10/12/2007, -2/+29Dogs are easier to sympathize with than humans. They're generally assumed to be a product of their environment, while humans are assumed to have responsibility for their actions. The result is that humans have the potential of being considered evil, and dogs are always assumed innocent.
- n00bst3r, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2@wingnut21
First thing I thought of when I saw the picture was exactly what you said. Or at least the part about the dog should have gotten the Darwin Award. - Dundasbro, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7We generally hold humans to have more sense than a dog. If a dog tries to attack another animal and gets hammered then we can blame it on instinct. If a human starts wondering what would happen if he used a defribulater on himself then does it generally we are gonna think he's a ***** idiot.
- wingnut21, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Porcupines are dumber than dogs. Therefore, you should be feeling sorry for the porcupine for being harassed by the dog. Right?
- nofxjunkee, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2My mom had some type of collie when she was a kid and it fought a porcupine once, but only had several quills stuck in and around its nose. So that dog learned its lesson pretty quick, but this dog didn't. When I saw the pic I couldn't believe how relentless that dog must have been because that obviously hurts like a son of a bitch! Maybe it deserves it, maybe not. I don't care too much I'm just glad I could see these pics. I mean, wow.
- wingnut21, on 10/12/2007, -5/+58I find it funny that you'll see a story posted about a human dieing in a stupid manner, and people will post "LOL DARWIN AWARD!! HE DESRVED IT!!!!"
- mizzouse, on 10/12/2007, -30/+6You know, dogs have certainly earned their stereotype of stupidity.

"Cats are either stupid, or extremely smart and pretending to be stupid so we can serve them." - MightyGiant, on 10/12/2007, -1/+34Woah... is this a Dog vs. Cat flame war about to start?

- LonesomeFighter, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10How the hell do they take them out? Pull? wow, i feel bad for that dog. But seriously, after the first thing getting stuck in face, the dog should have run away.
- Berkana, on 10/12/2007, -6/+2Here's what I'd do:
Step 1: dip the whole dog in maximum strength Ambisol.
Step 2: get several boxes of spot bandages and Neosporin ready for deployment.
Step 3: Get pliers, and work from outside in.
The Snopes article says that this bitch's tongue was also covered in quills so badly she couldn't close her mouth.
- Berkana, on 10/12/2007, -6/+2Here's what I'd do:
- discochew, on 10/12/2007, -34/+2What kind of ***** would see his dog like that, and decided to take pictures of it, instead of it taking it to an urgent care center immediately, then filing the pictures under humor. Am I the only person deeply disturbed by this picture?
- RoroCo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+30You do realize that the pictures are taken in a vet office...
- versionke, on 10/12/2007, -0/+23the pictures were taken by the vet before they began removing them.

- EtherGnat, on 10/12/2007, -3/+10@metalgod79
If this story is lame why did you digg it you idiot? Let's take a look at what else you've dugg:
* A false story about the Wii
* A spoof story about the Wii
* Pictures of Miss Nevada kissing another girl
* A history of a video game
* A dead Munster
Real classy stuff there, Einstein. - metalgod79, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0Please people, wow you've exposed the stories I've dugg woopie. Your sooo cool, I guess you digging the 50 Years of Playboy Centerfolds (NSFW), The 15 Best Places to Waste Time on the Web stories makes you just as classy as me.
You've ruined my day im going to go sit in my room and cry now.... - EtherGnat, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I admit I've dugg some complete trash. I wasn't making fun of what you've dugg because there's anything wrong with it, I was just pointing out you're a hypocrite. We all digg what we like and everybody has different tastes. If something is lame bury it as such and move on. Instead you attacked not only the story itself but the thousands of people who enjoyed it. There's no call for that, especially given your own digging history. Grow up some and don't be such a pain in the ass.
- sysoprock, on 10/12/2007, -4/+4What's funny is that even though the dog was stupid enough to try and bite a porcupine, he's still more intelligent than the collective membership of Free Republic.
- floridiot2, on 10/12/2007, -1/+46What's the difference between a BMW and a porcupine?
Porcupine's have pricks on the outside.
:> - Brutis1, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5That's not a pit bull. It's a Bull Terrier.
- HabboX, on 10/12/2007, -4/+3Finally someone noticed that it wasn't a pitbull. I guess that many people don't know the difference between a Pitbull Terrier and a Bull Terrier.
- manifestdata, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2Or maybe the breed of the dog wasn't important, but thanks for trolling.
- ricksite, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2manifestdata, I agree that the breed of the dog isn't important but the headline says that it is a pit bull. Pit bulls are always made out to be evil, child killing, grandmother mauling, fear no evil dogs. Many towns are enacting laws to ban pit bulls. This is ***** because most of what people believe about them isn't true. Pit bulls are not inherently bad dogs and they often get marks against them for things other breeds do. Check out this site with pictures of dogs mistaken as Pit bulls. http://www.pitbullsontheweb.com/petbull/findpit.html
- alternateheaven, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Dispite the damage done to the dog I suspect the porcupine ended up seriously wounded as well if not dead given the fact that a pitbull has an insanely strong grip with the jaws, and probably could have broken the porcupine's neck in the process of sustaining its wounds, and for the sake of the dog I hope thats how it played out.
- MadScientist420, on 10/12/2007, -6/+7I don't understand why anyone would own such a stupid, aggressive animal like that. That dog got everything it deserved; that is, a porcupine bitch slap.
- DownWithTheShip, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1I don't understand such stupid comments as yours. So because the dog was curious and went up to this animal it's stupid and aggressive? This is what ALL dogs do. If ANY dog sees a strange animal it's gonna check it out. Please do us all a favor and keep your ignorant comments to yourself.
- MuTeD, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6He'll be fine.
- cgruber, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Growing up in northern Wisconsin I've had many dogs tangle with a porcupine. Although they all stopped after getting hit once, still leaves about 30 quills in them. Bloody mess when you remove them.
- CBTF, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1That looks like it's extremely sore. The one time my dog ran away she too attacked a porcupine... it was nothing close to being this bad though.
- lapo3399, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I used to have a boxer. It would run around in the forest at my camp, and a couple of times it came back with a face full of porcupine quills. Luckily, no instance was nearly as bad as this one, and my father was able (in the absence of a proximal vet) to remove them with pliers. It seemed pretty painful for him to have them removed, though they don't leave very bad wounds. Apparently, the real danger is the formation of abscesses from deeply embedded quill fragments, though we never had that problem.
- maka25, on 10/12/2007, -5/+2As a pit bull owner, it pains me to see that. Ouch indeed!
- MrESaulved, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Imagine your even more serious pain if you were an English Bull Terrier owner! You dodged a bullet there champ!

- moghua, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1It survived. Read the snopes article on it (posted earlier).
- Rell812, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1Wow. I must have seen this at least 2 years ago on Compfused's image gallery. And if it was on Compfused, it must have been around for at least half a year before that.

- Sebach, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Anyone notice the cute collar with multi-colored paw prints on it? With the way this dog apparently behaves, perhaps black leather with some hardcore studs or at least a nylon one with a woodland camo pattern would be more appropriate?

- KingofHalo, on 10/12/2007, -11/+41: you people say this dog deserved it what if the porcupine attacked the dog and the dog only defended him self because it had nothing else to do
2: i have a bull terrier (or in this case a pit bull) and he has killed a raccoon it is physically imposable to get him away from a fight so don't blame the owner the owner might have try and got a couple of pine's for him self
3 this is not fake and for proof look closely at the photo on the dog face there is (disturbingly enough) flesh on his face from on of the pine's witch makes me this the dog might have won?
PS: don't flag me down I'm jest saying fact's- iDiggIt42, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3ok then i'll jest digg you down instead of flagging you down cause you know the fact's are alwayz right.

- NikoKun, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2that dog had to be pretty stupid to keep going after the porcupine even after the first few spikes... i mean seriously... he had to have been continuously attacking it to get THAT many in its face and front body... @_@
Porcupines dont shoot their spines, and they only get stuck in u if u have contact with the animal... so that dog really has to be agressive to have that happen to him... and really stupid to not stop after the first lesson from the first spine attack... -_-
I hope he lived through that... and I hope he learned from it... XD and yes, dogs can learn lessons... @_@ but man... what a foulish dog XD- skyfire1, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Welcome to the wild world of animals.

- boredpersonhere, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0I feel sorry for the owner. Pfft, how much do you think that it would cost for all of those spines to be removed?
