New "Terminator 2" Robots Will Morph, Ooze & Squeeze
newscientist.com — Remember the morphing robot T-1000 from the film Terminator 2? Could something like that ever become a reality? The folks at DARPA apparently think so. Last week they issued a request for proposals on developing so-called Chemical Robots (ChemBots), which would change shape in order to squeeze through tiny gaps.

- boombye, on 10/12/2007, -5/+4Awesome *****. DARPA does some really great stuff over there, especially at that IAO office, but that's neither here nor there. But um, yeah, I'm still hoping they'll come out with those color changing camo outfits that I saw in Future Fighting Machines on TechTV.
Also, I have an idea for your next avatar, just get a screen cap of Adama at the end of the Season 3 blooper reel of him swimming, it's almost as hilarious as that pic you have of him. Sorry to have been off topic with that.- AdmiralAdama, on 10/12/2007, -7/+8i appreciate the avatar suggestion. Many of the "foreign haters/retards" i have picked up think I am an "ugly, mustached, pockmarked, gay guy"....maybe it's time for a change.
- boombye, on 10/12/2007, -7/+2Ah frak, I dug your comment down that I'm trying to reply to by accident..I turned my head to look at MSNBC while clicking on the thumb and my hand must've moved. Sorry. But yeah anyways, I saw it on youtube right before getting on digg. It's pretty good.

Wait til the end, and you'll see a swimming sequence lol. - southwestnut, on 10/12/2007, -4/+3If you name is John Connor, its time to move.........
- EBFoxbat, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I need to find a way to make myself useful to an AI really really quickly.
- KingMoses, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Don't go changin', Admiral.
- miketrin, on 10/12/2007, -6/+4@AdmiralAdama - a nice step away from your political submissions. Dugg for coolness!
- AdmiralAdama, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5Why thank you, miketrin. AdmiralAdama is quite obviously interested in the Global Jihad and possible superrobots that will turn on their makers and try to destroy us.
- masterkenobi, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7Groovy! Maybe now they can finally find John Connor...
- Mootabolife, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2What would be the point? The third one proved that history had already been written, and further attempts would fail.
- adraft, on 10/12/2007, -1/+23And they called me crazy when I T-1000 proofed my house with a caulk gun.
- Wonkanobi, on 10/12/2007, -4/+2I, for one, welcome our oozy ChemBot overlords.
- tektalk, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3HOLY *****! Skynet beta in the works already?!
- glooper23, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3Only 10 years behind.
- SmokeAbowl, on 10/12/2007, -9/+2Dugg down for making me think that they were re-making Terminator 2.
Fix the tittle AssClown! - kevin45, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8Hey, remember when DARPA caused all that crazy Metal Gear ***** to happen?
Solid Snake can't save us forever.- CapeKid, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2That is what Jack Bauer is for. He catches anything world destruction plot snake misses
- ChicknBot, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4GREAT! From now on I am gonna have to carry a container with molten steel for self-defense.
- kevin45, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Don't you mean liquid nitrogen? Because you may slip, and...
well, you're ***** either way. - ChicknBot, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3well I thought about nitrogen, but the bastard will reshape himself at room temperature in a few minutes giving me not much time to run, with the molten steel at least I can throw it at his feet and the sucker probably wont be able to move anymore.
- dacheetah, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3If you can find a container that can hold liquid steel for any reasonable period of time, and remain portable, I'd be impressed.
At least with liquid nitrogen you could keep it compressed, and with a small explosive charge strapped to the side of it make a freeze grenade sort of thing, then when the T-1000 breaks up into smaller bits (Assuming you froze him enough, last time it took a truck-load of the stuff) grab the still solid chunks and put each one in a seperate jar, that should hold him a little longer.
- kevin45, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Don't you mean liquid nitrogen? Because you may slip, and...
- AshtonKe, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1Cool, they're requesting designs. But it's only a request at that point. There's no tech behind this, just speculation. Do I hope it suceeds? Of course. And if it does, I'll be very interested. But for now, dugg down.
- Daolohua, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4The fools! Have they learned nothing from the movie!?
- kerryhall, on 10/12/2007, -4/+4I can't think of a bigger waste of taxpayer (my) money than this. What the hell do we need this crap for? Sure it sounds cool, but how about some more funding for public schools?
- MaximegalonInfo, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Agreed, but see my post below for an example of bigger waste. And, unfortunately, it happens all the time...
- spidermanspants, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2I think its time to invest in Skynet stock
- donotdigg, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2The next generation of these squeeze bots will be fitted with running shoes so they can chase after cars with minimal effort.
- MaximegalonInfo, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4Yes, this is "cool" and all. I'm sure I'll get dugg down for common sense, but here goes...
We have a overwhelmed police force in the US, failing electrical grids, nearly the dumbest high school students in the modern world, and an overpriced war going on. Seriously, why can't we put money to better use in the US?
Can't we at least put the money towards realistic intel gathering systems or body armor for the troops? Or, are we always going to keep spending military money to research psychic teleportation powers and the like: http://www.usatoday.com/tech/news/2004-11-05-teleportation_x.htm
The "they gave us the internet" argument doesn't hold up. Money being spend on the direct source of theproblem is best, not tangential research projects.- calvmari, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I think it comes from the concept of budget. Hey, we've only used up half our budget this year... spend spend spend so they don't lower our budget the next year!
- Ru55, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7JOHN: So this other guy? He's a terminator too,
right, like you?
TERMINATOR: Not like me. A T-1000. Advanced prototype.
A mimetic polyalloy.
JOHN: What does that mean?
TERMINATOR: Liquid metal.
JOHN: Radical- AdmiralAdama, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5that kid almost destroyed term 2.
- pseudologue, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1The article is cool but the comments after it on the site are even more hilarious. It's a bunch of ***** arguing about the plural form of octopus.
Octopodai! - Rosco, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4As interesting as this sounds, the first thing that came to my mind was not the Terminator movies, but the "Grey Goo" theory. Now that is something to be concerned of.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Grey_goo - Bishoco, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2I, for one, welcome our ChemBot overlords.
- venom8599, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Now they just need to license Robert Patrick's likeness...
- nastri83, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0You must lower me into the steel! AUGHEEAUGH!
- modena, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1The first thing that came to my head after reading this, and the first comment from the article mentions it too, is the concept of the "utility fog." I guess that would be the next step from this sort of technology. Next thing you know we'll all be these sentient utility fogs constantly forming and reforming. Sounds like Transmetropolitan.
- SkippyDoorknob, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1That would explain the mystery smoke monster on Lost.
- MattGrover, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Yeah but will it run like the T1000???
"Have you seen this boy?"- SkippyDoorknob, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2"Say, that's a nice bike"
