- AuAndCs, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Speed bumps! Only turn hard if you are going too fast. Would be a godsend.

According to a link off that article it is being used in lightweight flexible kevlar.... - SyDIGG, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Hmmm ...when will the condoms be made of this material?
- theantidote, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2If it could withstand a bullet it would be great for police and army implementations. I know right now the bulletproof armor is expensive and heavy, making it hard for troops to move easily.
- buckaroo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2A nice benefit - can now fold up your "helmet" to fit in a backpack, and other places where a rigid one would be too bulky.
- Champzilla, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Ever see that smart putty? Thats teh first thing I thougth of.

- Nefarious_Denny, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Possible implications:
Convertable Soft Top - frankiejr, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"The Swiss company Ribcap is bringing out a new line of headgear for snowsports based on this material."
I guess that'd only be good if it was marketed as a cheap, disposable helmet. I doubt the molecules spring back to their original, soft base after an impact. Speaking for myself, I wouldn't spend the money for a new technology just for one crash in an ass-ugly helmet. - Redcooper02, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Among other things, I'd like to see it incorporated into things like cell phones, PDA's etc so that when the unit is banged, dropped, etc... it results in no or minimal damage.
- comrademikhail, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1From the ripcap website:
"The ribcap doesn’t offer a complete headprotection and doesn’t comply with any standards established for protective headgear like helmets."
sounds great."
I think what they mean by the doesn't offer complete head protection is that it doesn't cover your whole head, namely your face. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1sounds like the whole cornstarch+water thing... really cool
+digg - xakaxunknownx, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1From the ripcap website:
"The ribcap doesn’t offer a complete headprotection and doesn’t comply with any standards established for protective headgear like helmets."
sounds great. - capn_caveman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0If I was a pro wrestler I'd be all over this....
- LowGan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0i like it..alot, i hate wearing helmets, i've only fallen and hit my head once in all the extreme sports i've ever done, and it wasn't very hard
- Tobey, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Wow, very cool. This could be used in so many other things too.
- jmccorm, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0This could have breakthrough qualities in the field of teledildonics!
- therage96, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Wow, this is very cool. When I get a motorcycle, I'd like to have a bodysuit made of this stuff.
- sooperdooper, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0hey, it looks less dorky than wearing a regular bike helmet, right?
right?
just out of fear (thx voide), would hardening upon impact still mean a concussion, or would it "lock up" more or less immediately? Or what? - Voide, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I don't think I would trust this...lmao. With my luck, it wouldn't work correctly and the ***** probably wouldn't lock up
ha ha ha ha - benmorris, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0It would be cool if it wasn't so amazingly ugly
- patonw, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0It would be trivial to make a prototype that doesn't look so butt ugly for press releases. One has to wonder why they didn't. Just dye the damned thing black or something.
- vernsan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"Possible implications:
Convertable Soft Top"
Think of how people would have to slowly break in haha, well only if they are going through the top.
"I want the foam filling cars from Demolition Man"
I want one too! - capn_caveman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0http://www.ribcap.com/
- LittleOni, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0That's damn impressive tech, right there. The only thing to worry about next would be the effect an impact to the head while wearing this, on a persons neck. I guess it could end up feeling like mild whiplash or, in an extreme case, a person's head would be fine, but the neck is broken. Very cool, nonetheless.
- Morph_Ball, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Very clever. I'll bet there was much head-banging-against-wall during the five years this took~
- trogdoor, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0This would be awesome for football. Rigid pads slow you down.
- CheapDigWannbe, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0That is one amazing invention...
You'll still look like a queer in one of those though. - YanSan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0yay, no more moms telling me to wear a helmet snowboarding...not that they ever did... still it should progress into something awesome
- supz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0therage96 said "Wow, this is very cool. When I get a motorcycle, I'd like to have a bodysuit made of this stuff."
I second that... It would be great to see spine protectors made of this stuff... the good ones are made of pretty rigid plastic, which is really uncomfortable while riding. Having a back protector that becomes rigid only upon impact would be such a great improvement... and may as well make the entire jacket out of it, depending on the costs. Soon, riding a motorcycle will be as safe as being a cager :) - cornfused, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Carrot Top unavailable for comment.
- vampirical, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Took them long enough, I've been waiting for this for a long time. The basis for this sort of thing has been known to science for such a long time (some examples pop up in the first few comments) and Larry Niven wrote about body armor utilizing this sort of material in his fiction. Ever since then I've wanted it to be real already, I've never really seen why not except for maybe getting the hardening to occur quickly enough and slowing or padding the interior enough to cushion the blow (no point wearing armor that will hurt you as much as anything else), and it's finally almost kind of here (as a stupid helmet at least). Hurray!
- sonnysavage, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0This material is actually in use... I want these shoes:

(Globe - Icon) - mrkoje, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I will throw tomatos at anyone wearing a purple impact suit.
- FireRabbit, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I was thinking about riding my bike one day last summer... but the helmet was just too ridiculus. I thought to myself how nice it would be to have something exactly like this, woohoo!
- FitFinlay, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0You know Howard invented the Soft Helmet
HooHoo
Tell em Fred - jnorris441, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I've got a soft head that turns hard when compressed (repeatedly)
- BlogJones, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Cool. It's like a seatbelt for your head.
- Philbert, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Not sure it would sell. One thing about helmets is that they make people -feel- safe. I don't think anyone would subconsciously feel safe wearing something soft, no matter what logic tells them.
- ManiacFive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Funny, they've promoted a helmet, which seems in no way safe! theres a whole bunch of better uses for this, I would gladly wear this stuff for my knees and body (especially the knees!) But i'm not sure i would trust my head to it, I'm concerned by something hard, hitting my new funky soft helmet, which in turn, turns rock hard. Spreading the impact is one thing, but i'd rather that impact never got the chance to spread across my skull, down my neck into my spine in the first place.
"I think what they mean by the doesn't offer complete head protection is that it doesn't cover your whole head, namely your face."
Neither do open face helmets, or even riding helmets or bicycle helmets, yet they meet certain standards. More likely there is no standard test to test this kind of helmet so they have no way to say it meets EU standards or equivilents. Haveta wait for the standards agencyies to catch up.
As for it being damn ugly, stick a woolen cover and a bobble on top and you've got yourself a wicked bad super stylish hat. :-) - Loki122, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0This has so many implications. I bet we will see the military using it in body armor in a few years to replace what is used now.
- IceKnight, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0we will still be in iraq :(
- MbgFire2067, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0If indeed the claims are accurate, I could see this really working well in the rescue/firefighting community. Current helmets can be very bulky, especially in confined space and crashes with confinement and entrapment. I'll be watching this to see how it plays out.
- diggismycollege, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0its awesome but looks stupid
- stevedemon, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Check out the website: http://www.ripcap.com
You'll notice it comes in different colors. Now, tell me that rastafarians everywhere won't love this! - amatasu_zero, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0That's ugly
- Kiel, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0i wanty
