- tbikkle, on 10/11/2007, -3/+168This hit me harder than I would have ever expected -- I think because it took me back to a time when being a geek wasn't nearly as accepted as perhaps it is now. In an often lonely pre-adolescence, his show offered a brief but welcome comfort where I could watch TV for 30 minutes and not feel guilty or stupid or dorky or lame.
- mjd420nova, on 10/11/2007, -1/+116Don Herbert had a very instrumental part in sparking my interest in science at a very young age. This carried through to my teenage years and my drive to earn a BS in electronics.
- Anrkist, on 10/11/2007, -3/+98I thought my childhood was over when Mr. Rogers died... I think it just died a little more.
- trer, on 10/11/2007, -0/+85If there were only more shows like Mr. Wizard instead of the drivel that passes for television today (i.e. Real World, American Idol...)...
- satman33, on 10/11/2007, -1/+75RIP.. Mr Hebert. You were the reason I wanted a microscope and chemistry set for Xmas when I was 8 years old. If this show was on today, it would probably be construed as terrorist training. You can not even buy a decent chemistry set any more.

Mr. Wizard + Bill Nye = My career in science and tech. - Namaha, on 10/11/2007, -0/+59This is Don's grandson. I received the news when I got home from school today. I was saddened of course to hear the news, but he was not well. Having to be taken care of was something he absolutely hated. Dialysis was something he hated even more, I'm glad that he is at peace now.
Reading your comments has made me very happy to know he was loved by people of all ages, I, and my family, thank you. - twertyto, on 10/11/2007, -0/+55Same experience. I got my MS in physics and later obtained a PhD in astronomy. I remember watching his show on Nick as a kid. It definitely sparked my interest in science. He most certainly had a part in that.
- slapded, on 10/11/2007, -0/+44i liked the episode where he shot off fireworks in the park and almost killed a kid by the swings
- Phineas, on 10/11/2007, -1/+39@tbikkle, Same here. I never would have even thought of him but when I heard he died I was really sad. May he rest in peace!
- Wargalas, on 10/11/2007, -9/+43@carpespasm
Mr. Wizard is the one person who I will NEVER steal material from. You can buy the whole series on DVD at http://www.mrwizardstudios.com/ Support the man and his family who opened your mind and made sure to include everyone, even those who were interested in the subject but were society's outcasts. - eightbitgirl, on 10/11/2007, -0/+24how sad. I loved watching him in the early morning on Nickelodeon and thinking that maybe someday I'd be some awesome scientist too. Bill Nye had nothing on Mr. Wizard.
- AcidPhysx, on 10/11/2007, -0/+22Member when he had that liquid nitrogen . . . and then he put the rubber ball in . .. and then he smashed it on the floor . . . and then . . . *sniffle*
- tbikkle, on 10/11/2007, -0/+20@wargalas
you're lucky you had the foresight to email him. i wish i had. i'm glad that at least he heard from some of the people he influenced so much.
it's funny because as everyone is recounting their favorite episodes, i realize that mine isn't one with explosions or something else sexy... the only episode i still remember is when he demonstrated how i-beams and hollow pipes are stronger than solid material. the idea violated every concept of physical knowledge i had at the time, it completely blew me away. to this day, every time i see an i-beam, i think of mr. wizard. - Wargalas, on 10/11/2007, -0/+18@tbikkle
Then you've honored the man more then he could have ever asked for. I used to watch Mr. Wizards World when I was a kid as well, and luckily, I got to send him an email shortly before his death telling him how much he influenced my life and interest in math and science. His goal was to get people involved in math/science/physics and since he's obviously done that in spades. Rest In Peace Mr. Wizard! - indyGuy, on 10/11/2007, -2/+20"Not trying to be disrespectful or anything, but I've never heard of this man in my life."
You really had to be a kid in the 90's (or 50's or 60's). See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Watch_Mr._Wizard for a little history lesson. - arbulus, on 10/11/2007, -2/+20seriously, if that's the best you have to say, then it would be best not to say anything at all.
- hackmiester, on 10/11/2007, -8/+25***** you!
- djspanky, on 10/11/2007, -0/+17I used to wake up at 4am and watch his show on Nickelodeon. This was when I was 6! I used to love his show. He will be missed.
The best episode is when he puts either calcium or sodium on a bowl of cereal in the park and has a kid shoot a water gun onto it. The of course it bursts in to flames. Blew me away when I was a kid and is still pretty awesome.
The opening of the show

Holy crap, I remember that episode vividly. He gave three pieces of wood to one of the kids and told them to make a bridge across two blocks of wood. The kid then stood on the three flatly laid boards and they bent severely. He then took out a premade I beam and showed them how it worked and why it didn't bend when they stood on it. Jesus that takes me back 20+ years. Yeah I can't remember why I wrote to him, he just popped into my head one day and I decided to look him up and found his website. It had an email link and I wrote him a long multi page email about how he influenced my life and I thanked him for it. I never got a reply, but I didn't really expect one. :) Either way, you and I have richer lives because of this man. - peezer, on 10/11/2007, -0/+12Or in the 80's and watched Nickelodeon. R.I.P. Mr. Wizard.
"Supermarket Science" was my favorite. - inactive, on 10/11/2007, -0/+12@all
don't bury "borninda808" because he's never heard of Mr. Wizard. If anything his post should be kept neutral so that the younger kids can see his post.
Mr. Wizard was a scientific icon of our generation. He was a guy on TV that demonstrated cool science concepts in real life. It may sound trite, but he enabled several generations of young people to become engineers - namely: the latter day generation that developed the internet (1996-1999; gen X'ers), the generation of pioneers that exploited it (the 2k-2.4k), and many of the current generation of "Web 2.0" pioneers.
Heck, I bet most of us that remember Mr. Wizard also remember that Alanis Morrisette was just Christine getting slimed on "You Can't Do That on Television". - inactive, on 10/11/2007, -0/+12Wow, I feel like a young noob. Never heard of this guy. But my condolences go out to his family.

- XStatic, on 10/11/2007, -0/+10Thanks for posting, share our condolences with your family, take care!
- PuyoDead, on 10/11/2007, -1/+11Yea, I don't normally reply to these, but a hearty, healthy, "***** You" is in order for bluto.
- slearwig, on 10/11/2007, -2/+11Mr. Wizard, You Asked For It!, and The 21st Century With Walter Cronkite
are among the most useful t.v. shows ever produced. - PaperMonkey, on 10/11/2007, -0/+9Go to your Room Bluto.. the grownups are talking now.
- Kronos6948, on 10/11/2007, -0/+9Sure sign of getting old is watching people you admired while growing up die. I'll never forget the episodes where he played with flash paper and lycapodium. Fun stuff indeed. Thanks to Mr. Wizard, we have Bill Nye.
You will be missed. - ucbrave92, on 10/11/2007, -0/+8this is sad. just last night some friends and i were talking about the show and how there isn't really any programming on tv like it for kids today. if it wasn't for that show i would never be where i am today.
- brokencode, on 10/11/2007, -2/+10Science bless you Mr. Wizard!
- SaintStryfe, on 10/11/2007, -1/+9RIP is actually short for "requiescat in pace," Latin for "may he rest in peace." From wiki: "The English version is an example of backronym formation (although the two phrases mean roughly the same thing). Also, in Italian, it is said as "Riposi In Pace.""
So it's fine to abbreviate, just like shortening "ad maiorem Dei gloriam" to AMDG (look up about Jesuits), or "exempli gratia" is abbreviated e.g.. - CelebVoy, on 10/11/2007, -0/+8RIP Mr. Wizard. Your kids will miss you
- skotfarkis, on 10/11/2007, -0/+8YES I completely remember that episode. I asked my dad that day where I could get some Nitrogen.
This news is very upsetting to me. I also feel I wouldn't be anywhere today without him. I'm even getting teary eyed about it :(
I feel like I should go make a two-liter water bottle tornado in my kitchen in his memory. - Hegemony, on 10/11/2007, -0/+7I, like many of you, was encouraged to go into the sciences by Mr. Wizard. I owe my degree to him and Bill Nye. Sad day indeed.
- arbulus, on 10/11/2007, -0/+7Seconded. Your family is in all of our thoughts.
- mediaspree, on 10/11/2007, -2/+9I too think of him fondly. Along with Double Dare, Hey Dude, and Wild and Crazy Kids.
- Fordi, on 10/11/2007, -1/+8O_O
That's the saddest thing I've heard in months. - kodekitten, on 10/11/2007, -0/+7As a chemistry teacher, I have access to about 16 Mr. Wizard videos with various themes. I appreciate Mr. Herbert a great deal and am thankful for his enthusiasm and creativity. Activites like his are challenging to design! Having loved him as a kid on Nickelodeon in the 80's, I always turn to him when I want to inspire my students now. My kids never fail to be amazed at the awesome things you can do with things around your house that demonstrate what I'm teaching in my classroom.
"Wow, you can light steel wool on fire? That's way more interesting than refreshing my Facebook page over and over!" - cmcgarity, on 10/11/2007, -0/+7Mr Wizard was a true spark for many of us to venture into technology and the sciences... I never realized before the debt of gratitude that I owe to him.
- XStatic, on 10/11/2007, -0/+7Web Site Down, DVDs were $15 for each of 3 volumes of Watch Mr.Wizard and $18 for each of 3 volumes of Mr.Wizard's World

It's okay. Nick today is too filled with "It's okay to be a multiracial trans-gendered family" to actually have educational shows anymore. - StayPuft, on 10/11/2007, -0/+6Mr. Wizard is probably to sole reason I got into science and finished my PhD. I still remember a lot of the experiments I saw on his show.
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -1/+7Just reading the title brought back great memories from my childhood.
RIP - kingfrank, on 10/11/2007, -0/+6I remember to this day a show he did on centripetal force. He used a bucket of water, a string and a tree .. and one very scared girl who thought she was going to get hit by the bucket. I'll never forget that because I remember thinking how cool it was. Thank you, sir, for filling our young lives with education and meaning, instead of the garbage kids are spoon-fed today.
- sTiVo, on 10/11/2007, -0/+6Your family is in our prayers. You have grown up having one cool grandfather.
http://youtube.com/watch?v=6wv0wM8Ht2w&mode=related&search= - SaintStryfe, on 10/11/2007, -0/+6Mr. Wizard gave lots of kids dreams of being engineers and scientists. He gave me the wish to be a teacher. The slow, patient voice and the simple, easy to reproduce experiments, the useful information which I used all my life. His show taught me about LOGO, and lead me to my first use of a computer beyond a typewriter.
I'm so crushed by this loss. The world is a bit worse off, but if there's a heaven, it's a little more geeky today.
Remembering Mr. Wizard with love, fondness and genuine feeling. Excelsior, Sir, Excelsior. - protogenxl, on 10/11/2007, -0/+5Rest Kind Wizard For Your Task is Complete
- moosebumps, on 10/11/2007, -0/+5I was lucky and didn't have to wake up until 5am central time to catch me some Mr. Wizard. My parents and friends thought I was a little weird for doing so. They still think I'm a little weird sometimes, but at least now I have and EE degree and I can thank Mr. Herbert for the inspiration.
RIP - kevlarbaboon, on 10/11/2007, -0/+5This is obviously some sort of fake death spell. You can't fool me Mr. Wizard!
