- IphtashuFitz, on 05/15/2008, -5/+10I must be losing my memory... I thought I'd already seen an article about memory on the front page this morning.
- JettaMan, on 05/15/2008, -1/+2The example he uses of the holocaust memory is more likely fraud than memory distortion. There have been a lot of cases of people making up these stories, knowing they are difficult to verify and unlikely that anyone would scrutinize such a PC topic carefully. One book in particular had a woman who escaped a camp and lived with wolves, which was ludicrous yet believed for over a decade and translated into over a dozen languages. That's a separate topic from memory distortion - more like intentional memory distortion.

FRANK ZAPPA KIKS YUR ASS - ajkrik, on 05/16/2008, -1/+1You must have married my wife's sister.
- Melatinini, on 05/22/2008, -0/+0The article doesn't use the word "confabulation," but that's the word that I've usually seen used to describe the creation of false memories and the person's subsequent conviction of the reality of these memories. The topic is fascinating. It's come up a lot lately; shortly after I became interested in the topic, Hillary Clinton's false memory -- http://digg.com/search?section=all&s=clinton+bosni ... -- was exposed. (Actually, the articles I'd seen before searching it here generally attributed it to confabulation, but I guess the more popular view is that she just straight-out lied. *shrugs* I guess I'm naive.)
Hmm... just found and dugg an article that might help explain the phenomenon: http://digg.com/general_sciences/Separate_Parts_of ... - lamiaconfitor, on 05/15/2008, -1/+1thats it: new rules on digg: KEVIN ROSE: PAY ATTENTION-
1. No one is to comment on whether they put up the first post on a front page article or not. diggers that know that articles can be dugg up without comments are becoming a rare but noble breed
2. People who comment because they are ignorant of the algorithm should be banned immediately after making such a stupid comment, I am so tired of people commenting that their favorite articles haven't made the front page when articles more relevant to current events/pop culture made it there first with less diggs then their favorite story about dim sung recipes. - lamiaconfitor, on 05/15/2008, -1/+1dugg down because you think reality is exclusively subjective to the observer.
- lamiaconfitor, on 05/15/2008, -2/+2ha ha! memory is based on association, and not on hard core recollection of fact!
- inactive, on 05/16/2008, -2/+1Yes, my wife suffers from it BIG time.
I distinctly remember her vowing to love me till death do us part.
Apparently she remembers it as "torture", not "love"...... - lamiaconfitor, on 05/15/2008, -2/+1You, sir/mam(or, in your case person) officially have the First Comment.
- matschig, on 05/15/2008, -3/+1K. Dugg for I Am The Walrus reference. BEATLES FTW!
- Derrekito, on 05/15/2008, -3/+1So basically memory is flawed. We can confuse fantasy and reality unintentionally. A man who grew up in Switzerland believes he was in a Nazi German concentration camp. For purposes, that is HIS reality, but not ours.
Many of our memories (not mine ;) ) seems to be predisposed to some level of racism: "... researchers revealed that upon reviewing a list of male names, college students of all races were more likely to claim that they recognized local criminal names when presented with 'stereotypically black' names."
It's an interesting article, but let me know when there is a brain patch to fix this. - jnorris441, on 05/15/2008, -3/+1Too bad they didn't remember to check the grammar...
- trollick, on 05/15/2008, -4/+1I forgot what I was going to say.
- FasterGun, on 05/15/2008, -4/+1Right now reality is so distorted I don't want to remember it. I guess that's not really the same thing.
- lamiaconfitor, on 05/15/2008, -4/+1Idiot.
- j0eb0nd7, on 05/15/2008, -3/+0Interesting article. I have some serious memory challenges and it always surprises my wife when I forget important things, yet I remember silly things from my childhood that are completely useless!
