MIT Builds Efficient Nanowire Storage to Replace Car Batteri
popularmechanics.com — "Could the ultracapacitor replace lithium ion in hybrids and plug-in vehicles? Our senior automotive editor already thinks the science adds up, but it ’s in a tiny box at a messy lab that the future of automotive efficiency is taking a surprising turn toward extending range and battery life. Damn, my car doesn't have one of those...;-)- Aidje, on 03/05/2008, -2/+4It's clearly not a misspelling; the title simply got cut short (and the submitter apparently didn't realize it until it was too late).

- Azuroth, on 03/05/2008, -0/+2In other words, for those too dense to unravel the ultra cryptic sharkd, batteries is plural for battery. See the i there?
- Ragzouken, on 03/05/2008, -0/+3Heard of 'batteries'?

- DrDragun, on 03/05/2008, -0/+1How is the ultra-capacitor specifically useful for cars and not all other battery applications?
- duggreen, on 03/05/2008, -0/+2Batteri's are good for storing large amounts of charge without loss. Caps are good at storing smaller amounts and discharging and charging much quicker, but the charge drops with time. That makes them best choice for a 'serial' hybrid vehicle, which uses the ICE only for generating power, and the electric motors do all the moving.
- koft, on 03/05/2008, -1/+2That car has seen better days...
- Modestexcuse, on 03/05/2008, -3/+1I'm scared of nanotechnology. It's just so, big.
- jabberwolf, on 03/05/2008, -1/+1Nope because though it can hold a very large charge, it cant sustain it's hold for very long.
Thats why A123 batteries are more likely to be used on the future... plus they are biodegradable. - handheldchimp, on 03/05/2008, -9/+2I must have a cheap knock off of a Batteri then...mine has a "y" at the end of it...
Hey, I tried. - HaloZero, on 03/05/2008, -2/+3Either the submitter has horrible spelling, or he does not double check his submissions and accidentally forgot the ies.
Apparently, in terms of comments the misspelling is more interesting than the article (which is good). - Modestexcuse, on 03/05/2008, -2/+10Batteri is Danish, Norwegian and Swedish. Come on, it isn't misspelled.

I think supercaps are very promising and worthy of research ... but it's troubling to hear the researchers make claims like this which only hint at their limited real world experience with them. - bmorlok, on 03/05/2008, -1/+3It was probably a copy and paste title - Batteri was probably Batteries
However, everyone would probably rather assume the poster was too dumb to know how to spell Battery - trapilales, on 03/05/2008, -0/+1Nice try MIT. Unfortunately smashing through the boundaries, lunacy has found me, cannot stop the Battery.

- forcedfx, on 03/05/2008, -0/+2So what purpose do the subwoofers serve?
- joeanon, on 03/05/2008, -0/+2OH PLEASE nanobattery research has been going on for years. I've been talking about it for at least 2 years and it's OBVIOUSLY the wave of the future as lithium-ion is barely doing it, while there is simply no option for high demand like cars.
Of course batteries and electric care are the obvious direction. Unlike the fuel cell or combustions engine electric engines are highly efficient. Plus you'll be able to literally plug the renewable energy solutions of the future into our electric transport infrastructure.
I envision as soon as the capacitor battery is developed it will offer light fast charge capability and electric cars will take over. We aren't far from it at all, more realistically is that battery research is behind the times hence why we are facing this energy crisis in the first place. Lead Acid is recyclable, but simply far to heavy for it's energy storage and the charge time is slow.
Once the electric car hits you move toward magnetic bullet trains to help offset carbon from air traffic. Though I don't yet know the efficiency of a magnetic train I do know they can reach potentially comparable speeds and likely do so with less public liability and pollution. I think you could make a switchable magnetic train and make rail traffic much more desirable with small personal size rail cars instead of giant train with many stops.
I'm pretty sure if we can go the moon we can manage to connect our cities with high efficiency mass transit. Electric car or not, airplanes add considerable carbon and many developing nations will be building large air fleets double and tripling the amount of planes in the air. - frogman54, on 03/05/2008, -1/+2I made a battery out of a potato in 7th grade science class. Beat that MIT!
- westvaco, on 03/05/2008, -1/+1The common fallacy among people regarding energy efficiency is that people never think about total energy required to make a product. Cars are a great example of this. The total energy to make the care require many steps like making the plastic, paints, mine the iron and turn it in to steel, then to assemble the compents and finally to assemble the finish product. The energy to produce out strips the the total energy that will be needed to use the car for it's entire lifetime. BTW - too bad the article failed to mention that the total energy to make a nanowire battery is exponentially higher than the total inefficiencies found in the production and use of traditional batteries.
- TechyLah, on 03/05/2008, -0/+3Hey, there.
First you develop the technology, THEN you productize it and go for mass production.
BTW, you're probably wrong about the cost of energy to manufacture PER CAR. It that were true, it wouldn't pay to make, buy, or own a car.
The important thing here is that there is no INHERENT reason for nanowire battery production costs to remain high.
Current cost of production means nothing.
This was a GREAT article. Capacitors are designed for storing energy. Batteries really aren't.
- TechyLah, on 03/05/2008, -0/+3Hey, there.
- byogman, on 03/05/2008, -1/+0From the article:
"""
The challenge has been in reaching the theoretical capacity that Schindall’s team originally calculated. So far, the nanotubes can match the energy storage of standard ultracapacitors, but the goal remains to boost that capacity by a factor of five or even 10. “A couple of years ago, we thought we were six months to a year away. And that time has come and gone,” he says.
"""
So, a promising idea, but without even a lab result to back up the theoretical numbers that are the basis of the hype.
I wish them well, but they don't have anything remotely newsworthy yet. - wissler, on 03/05/2008, -1/+1This is just a cynical grab for government dollars.
An ultracapacitor has nothing in particular to do with a car. A better electrical storage cell would be useful for a wide range of things. The only reason to start hooking these things up to cars before they've even been proven good enough on paper is to grab dollars from the idiots handing them out. - darkciti2, on 03/05/2008, -0/+1Free the information!! Release it publicly or via creative commons.
If you don't, the vehicle manufacturers (or big Oil) will simply buy up the rights and squash this technology before it ever see the light of day. Big Oil _wants_ us to spend $3.50 per gallon of gasoline.
They will grant research departments millions in "donations" so that they can tell administrators / research fellows what to do with the technology (i.e. cancel the project, etc)
Information wants to be free and we've been hearing about these breakthrough advances in battery technology, ultra-capacitance, and solar efficiency for half a decade now and not seeing it come to fruition.
Release the info and create a new generation of startups and entrepreneurs / home-brewers. - FriedmannSol5, on 03/05/2008, -0/+0here's a project that might benefit from this:
http://www.solarnetwork.net/ - wishninja, on 03/05/2008, -0/+1We really need to embed energy into our major infrastructure so that for long distances you are essentially plugged in. I think we will stay on carbon based fuels then transition to a Hydrogen based fuel. There just isn't a good way to store energy.
- majordanger, on 03/06/2008, -0/+1 I think the students are doing a lil "pimp my ride" on the side.
I'm sure that 8 inch speaker in the front really doesn't help the nanotubes. - EllieElliott, on 03/07/2008, -0/+1There were no kittens killed in the submission of this article. And I want to thank all you crabby-ass commenters for bitchin' and moanin' about spelling. I have you to thank for helping make this popular.
