- CraigJ, on 10/12/2007, -2/+15that's not a hair question
- ltuspud, on 10/12/2007, -1/+11@ fluid
Yea, we never really get a lot of history information on Digg. All they want is random tech articles about how PS3 fails or Wii is amazing, etc. - SqueakyWheel, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Watched some cool history stuff on NOVA last night. They figured out how to read old texts that look destroyed to the naked eye.
- almostinsane, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Either that or a Kevin Rose sighting.
- fluidfoundation, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5yeah, if you want any real news added you have to title your Digg
"Kevin Rose seen using homebrew software on PSP at the Obama press conference protesting Bush's troop surge, track it with this new Ajax widget!" - ABadInAlbany, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2this was on Discovery or the History Channel in the past few weeks with video. This article just happens to suck.
- leedonahoe, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Cool, echoing what everyone else here said, I love these sorts of stories. i also wish that they'd get dugg up higher more often.
- losts, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2*****
- LucasKane, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3I'd do Vorenus's wife
- ABadInAlbany, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4necro.
- LogicBomB, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Although I love this discovery, I just feel that the description is lackluster. I'm not a huge history buff so I don't understand the value (back then) of lances and glass spheres. Were the lances gold or simply of the highest quality? Was glass a treasure back then or somewhat common for the upper class? What is an imperial standard?
Finding roman treasure is just about as cool as it gets for archeologist, I just wish they elaborated - possibly with pictures if possible, as to why it was so valueable that it must be hidden. Sounds more like a personal stash than an imperial treasure but like I said - i'm not a buff, just a guy who thinks it is interested who needs some more info. - brotherfigure, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2It says a lot about how cash-strapped the Roman state was in it's declining centuries when all the archaeologists could find are 'Imperial standards, lances and glass spheres'. The estates of the aristocracy and the Church certainly weren't lacking loot when the barbarians, and later the Vikings, started to pillage Western Europe after the collapse of Roman authority. Interesting.
- KingLeo, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Does anyone know how much this treasure is worth?
- alteratti, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I helped "digg" it.
Can I get my share, please?? - lukas88, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4I'm surprised Pollo didn't steal it
- schlongmeister, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3Roman booty.
- baalzebub, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1i love these types of stories, i just wish there were some high resolution photos of the treasure to drool over...
- leedonahoe, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1^^^^
It hasn't been flooded yet. Some activists are trying to save it or delay the flooding to allow for more excavation:
http://anthropology.net/user/kambiz_kamrani/blog/2007/01/25/the_woes_of_flooding_allianoi_aka_pergamon_an_archaeological_site_in_turkey - arunforce, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Well, I guess the fact is, as more historical artifacts are uncovered, there are going to be less to find, and hence less data posted.
But then again, theres a whole world full of artifacts, you just got to know where to look. - jmchez, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Priceless?
- Hypermarkalan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Oh, the article had a picture alright. Unfortunately it was of the inside of the Colosseum and not of Palatine Hill. Palatine Hill is amazing. Almost 3/4 of the ruins are still under ground, waiting to be discovered.
- jmchez, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1It;s the same in Athens, Alexandria and Mexico City. Whenever they have some new construction they have an archaeologist nearby to advice. Quite often they had to suspend digging for a long period of time. Apparently, the Turkish authorities are not as enlightened; They just built a dam and flooded and entire newly discovered Roman town.
- Wolfie351, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Let's see if they can stretch out 10 episodes on this on the History Channel
- jmchez, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1The death blow to Roman civilization and lifestyle in Western Europe did not come from the Barbarian invasions but from the wars of Reconquest of the Eastern Emperor Justinian and his General Belisaurius.
The Ostrogoths and Lombards had taken over Italy, but they were keeping alive almost all aspects of Roman life, thriving cities, roads, aqueducts, bath houses, the Senate, etc. When Belisaurius laid siege to the Italian cities, the walls were torn down, the aqueducts were broken, the fields were ravaged. Meanwhile the Ostrogoths started murdering the Roman aristocratic class and senators who were perceived as being pro-Justinian. - Darkness123, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1CraigJ: I guess you are the first to start it.
- Paroparo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Dugg because I'm a Latin student, and I rarely see stuff that has some relevance to my specialty here... or anywhere else for that matter. =/

- fluidfoundation, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1does that count for that 3some i had back in college?! DAMMIT.
no one is ever going to believe that midget was hot now. - 1dog, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0They say they can't have a Subway in Rome because every time they start digging they find a Tomb or something.
