- doremon313, on 09/05/2008, -1/+27they need to stop crying, if LHC doesnt kill us, we will probably end up nuke the crap out of each other anyway, and LHC is probably the less painful of the two
- WestonP, on 09/05/2008, -0/+20That's why he said "a day before", dubmass
- ASSASSYN360, on 09/06/2008, -0/+17Well if we did get sucked into a rift in time and space and utterly annihilated to oblivion we will be the talk of the galaxy.
- thephysicist, on 09/06/2008, -1/+16That's why its a branch of Physics called Theoretical Physics prehaps??
Mathematical models does'nt necessary follow rules set out in real life.
Why so negative? alot of scientic discoveries have involved high levels of risk somewhere along the line, but without risk taking we probably be living in the middle ages.
On a final note, the scientists who are working on the LHC and similar physics projects are;
1. alot more clever (whos entire lifetimes are dedicated to a few projects)
2. are not bankers and therefore tend not to give a ***** about how much $$ they make in the city. - zeptobyte, on 09/06/2008, -2/+17Yes, yes it is.
- zeptobyte, on 09/06/2008, -0/+14I'd really rather the world didn't end, but if I have to die, I can't imagine a better way to go than the annihilation of the whole planet.
- Bovorik, on 09/06/2008, -1/+14There's a greater chance of you lot vaporizing whilst brushing your teeth (literally) than the LHC ending life as we know it.
This is the interwebs though, and every little kiddie's an armchair physicist with their doom and gloom postulations. - markwilcox, on 09/06/2008, -3/+13" eat the planet from the inside” across a devastating four-year period of decay "
2008 + 4 = 2012? - prgmctan, on 09/06/2008, -1/+9Hard on
- CarStan, on 09/06/2008, -0/+8I hope it will create a möbius band and keep us all in a neverending time loop.
I'm setting my morning ringtone for wednesday to 'I got you Babe', just in case. - Jennefah, on 09/06/2008, -3/+11Meh... there's other planets.
Besides, there's probably also a 0.00000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000001% chance that a giant rabid sheep will devour the planet and kill us all but that doesn't mean that we should stop creating genetically modified "super sheep" to help feed the starving babies, does it? - Nowaiman, on 09/06/2008, -0/+7You broke the poor guy's leg.
- WestonP, on 09/05/2008, -0/+7I doubt we have the power to destroy the universe, and someone's going to try this eventually anyway, so you might as well get it over with.
- Murdats, on 09/06/2008, -2/+9there are thousands of things much, much more likely to destroy our planet then the LHC, and they haven't
are you going to question every day "there is a 0.0000000000000000000000000000001% chance that when I open my front door this morning my house will collapse on me, is it worth the risk?" - Qeveren, on 09/06/2008, -0/+6Well, look at it this way. On any given day, there's roughly a 0.00000005% chance that civilization will be annihilated by a 10km asteroid strike. And yet that's not nearly enough odds for us to get off our asses and do anything about it. I fail to see how the LHC is threatening.
- Murdats, on 09/06/2008, -1/+7because obviously god caused september 11 to warn is that in 1 day less then 7 years the apocalypse is comming.
- tradwolley, on 09/05/2008, -0/+6Of course it won't turn us to goo. We will be compressed to the size of a speck in the new black hole created. At least those of you without your tinfoil hats on.
- JAWS, on 09/06/2008, -2/+8There is no chance that the LHC will destroy the earth. Period.
http://blogs.discovermagazine.com/badastronomy/200 ... - insanebrain, on 09/06/2008, -1/+7fail
- wyrdness, on 09/06/2008, -0/+4Particle physics always gives me a large hadron.
- fgsfds, on 09/06/2008, -1/+5Why are people posting such nonsense?
Here's the clincher:
If the theory is RIGHT, then a black hole will form and boil away instantaneously.
If the theory is WRONG, then no black hole will form.
The chicken little effect is the result of incomplete and/or inaccurate information. Please do try to stop squawking over nothing. - silfiriel, on 09/06/2008, -0/+3well maybe the four horseman will turn the switch!?
LHC FTW! - fgsfds, on 09/06/2008, -0/+3Oh, for the love of-
The Mayan calender is based on astrological cycles, and the various numbers correspond to different cycles.
The alignment of the stars relative to the earth shifts by a tiny fraction of a degree per year. When the calender reaches it's 'end', that means that the alignment will be exactly the same as it was when the calender started.
It's like new years; we don't panic and start rampaging because THE CYCLE IS OVER AND THE WORLD IS DOOMED, we throw parties, get drunk, then wake-up the next day with a hang-over and bump the cycle counter (AKA: Year) up by one. - nshady, on 09/06/2008, -1/+4Is anyone else super excited that within our lifetimes we could potentially answer some of the longest-standing mysteries of physics? I mean, how often do you hear someone say "oh yeah, we'll be unlocking the secrets of the universe next Wednesday"? Next Wednesday! I mean, it's just insane! I can't stop smiling. And stoked.
And dude, can you imagine what it would be like to live in a world that was guaranteed to be destroyed over the course of four years!? Wouldn't that just be the most amazing experience?! Just imagine the completely changed social dynamics. The education system would be pointless. Economies would be radically changed - everyone would try and cash in their pensions, but currencies would become worthless. It would probably be accompanied by the biggest sexual revolution in human history. I mean, sure, I'd prefer that the human race continued somehow, but still, it would be pretty exciting. - AmnesiacJack, on 09/06/2008, -0/+3At this point I don't even care about all these apocalypse stories as long as the LHC and science in general keep making the front page. Hell I still know people who don't even know what the LHC is, thats simply unacceptable.
- Blandyman, on 09/06/2008, -0/+3Stick a gerbil in it.
- Trollhammaren, on 09/06/2008, -0/+3Reminds me of this comic: http://www.pbfcomics.com/?cid=PBF111-Reset.jpg
- jeffsback2223, on 09/06/2008, -0/+2Quit telling us "Everything will be OK" and flip the switch already. I'll just know who to strangle in the fiery depths of hell, if anything were to happen...
- bluebirdgm, on 09/06/2008, -1/+3Look, all I'm saying is that maybe they should start out with Small Hadron Collider first, and then once they've got the hang of it, move up to a Medium Hadron Collider...
- datastorageguy, on 09/06/2008, -0/+2If there were a major tectonic event, that might be the worst place considering the shock wave would meet at that very spot right?
- fgsfds, on 09/06/2008, -1/+3... Because if the theories are wrong, the nothing will happen?
Your car either starts or it doesn't, it doesn't engulf the planet in an apocalyptic fireball. - bucketofeels, on 09/06/2008, -1/+3Why would that date be relevant anyway? September 10th, oh no!
- datastorageguy, on 09/06/2008, -0/+2What I want to know is, if they don't find the Higgs particle, what is the next experiment they will do with LHC? I have read and watched documentaries about it and haven't heard what they will do when the missing particle(s) isn't found.
- zeptobyte, on 09/06/2008, -1/+3I think we'll probably have accurate models of the secrets of the universe before we do of the subprime mortgage market. It's much easier to model something with fixed, learnable rules.
- opticwind, on 09/06/2008, -0/+2The worst part for the ones saying this will kill us all is they won't be around to say "Aha! I was right!" if they ARE right.
- lektroluv, on 09/06/2008, -0/+2Good thing it won't make us gooey.
- fx666, on 09/06/2008, -0/+2This is how pseudo-science works -- someone makes a crazy "scientific" forecast and then the media jumps on it. In 1930s it was predicted by some quacks that a small nuclear explosion could cause a chain reaction in all earth radioactive materials and the whole planet would turn into one nuclear inferno. Now it is time for the next generation of quacks to make their equally stupid predictions If this were true, the universe would have been blown into pieces long time ago because the conditions described in the article are not unique and not limited to our neck of the woods..I predict that nothing terrible will happen next Wednesday, and anyone who disagrees should wait a little longer to see who is right.
- UrlorJkron, on 09/06/2008, -0/+2"Large Hadron Collider will not turn world to goo"
"... more of a vapor substance" says scientists. - Blandyman, on 09/06/2008, -0/+2Doesn't matter to me until it affects me. I don't care how many of you die as long as the game industry, torrents, and one kreon ripper out there survive and I still have my 360, I'll be ok.
- Blandyman, on 09/06/2008, -1/+3insanebrain:
The reference is to all the fanatics who say the world will end in 2012 because that's when the Mayan calendar ends because they predict it as the end of humanity.
Awesome. - nathanww, on 09/07/2008, -0/+2There's probably a 0.00000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000001% that tomorrow while driving you will hit another car of the same pass of yours but composed entireley of antimatter, creating a devastating release of energy. Maybe you shouldn't drive tomorrow?
- JAWS, on 09/06/2008, -0/+2Mathematical models done by people that know a hell of a lot more than you (or I) about particle physics. That is much easier to predict than the subprime fiasco simply because there is no human behaviour influencing the physics while the subprime is ALL about human behaviour.
- S5S5S5, on 09/06/2008, -1/+3Just to follow up, a lot of math phd's and even physics phd's are hired on wall street, and they're the ones who build the models that value financial instruments.
JAWS, you do have a point with human behavior though. - grimward, on 09/06/2008, -0/+2no, at that compression the liquid wouldn't "be" liquid, it would just be tightly packed mass, just like everything else.
- sap959, on 09/06/2008, -0/+2doomsday machine
- przemeklach, on 09/06/2008, -0/+2I can't wait to hear what all these nut jobs will have to say once it's Thursday morning and we're all still here.
- inactive, on 09/07/2008, -0/+1Yeah, sap959. You did do it wrong. *****.
- ZeMoose, on 09/06/2008, -0/+1Point it at a helicopter?
http://xkcd.com/401/ - Reiv, on 09/06/2008, -0/+1Finally! I've been reading articles about this for 9 months or so and i've been wondering when they're going to do it.
