- kidwithsword, on 09/10/2008, -0/+481To be fair, they haven't collided anything. They just sent one proton beam clockwise. Then they sent a separate one counter-clockwise. They're just testing the technology.

Keep updated! - papastout, on 09/10/2008, -12/+151Collider? I hardly know her!
- Shiftgood, on 09/11/2008, -0/+107I know the world is not going to end even when they kick this thing up to full steam. But, I would just like the general public to know that I would rather die in the apocalypse than by cancer, heart disease or some other means.
Think of the street cred you would get. - axan2003, on 09/11/2008, -0/+86You can also watch live webcams of it in action here http://www.cyriak.co.uk/lhc/lhc-webcams.html
- monkeyod, on 09/11/2008, -3/+86They have to get it up to 88 mph first...
- tubbyanimations, on 09/10/2008, -0/+74It was definitely best to go round saying the world wasnt going to end. You could be wrong, but who the hell is going to mock you for it, that particle next to you?
- inactive, on 09/11/2008, -1/+73Get your crowbars ready.
- SimmaDownNow, on 09/10/2008, -3/+73Well, if I am following any of this string theory stuff correctly; one, or several of the worlds that we simultaneously occupy, does end.
Additionally, and this is the more important point; this specific LHC article among the other fifty that were already submitted, will be buried a billion times in the world that does end. - Tynan, on 09/11/2008, -0/+53Inaccurate. The LHC isn't "fully operational" until October 21, when they'll start actually doing collisions with it.
Thus my favourite pickup line ever, "We're all gonna die tomorrow morning, you better have fun now," will be usable on at least one more occasion. Yay! - inactive, on 09/11/2008, -0/+49"How did you die?"
"A Big Bang sucker punched me" - Laminarcissus, on 09/11/2008, -0/+42Damn, and I made spaghettification sauce and everything.
- odkin, on 09/10/2008, -6/+46On the Day After, look for the following headline from the New York Times:
"World Ends; Women, Poor Hardest Hit" - pyrotix, on 09/11/2008, -0/+40http://www.cyriak.co.uk/lhc/lhc-webcams.html
- Flappy3, on 09/11/2008, -1/+37View source!
- AmyVernon, on 09/10/2008, -1/+32That was totally stupid, but I still laughed.
- psion01, on 09/11/2008, -3/+32I want to detonate a thermonuclear device at the precise geographical antipode to CERN (a couple hundred miles off the coast of New Zealand) at exactly the moment they start the first actual collision. Does that make me evil, or just a prankster with delusions of grandeur?
- Tophillious, on 09/11/2008, -3/+30get out of my digg /b/
- SayeSayno, on 09/11/2008, -1/+26LOL Check the page source for that web site

please email mike@frantic.org to receive a full refund"
edit: beaten! - origamistars, on 09/11/2008, -2/+26Only noobs are afraid of black holes. I'm afraid of strangelets. That's right, bask in my superior irrational fear.
- executorzz, on 09/11/2008, -0/+24they haven't collided anything yet.
- borez, on 09/11/2008, -0/+23Interestingly, you must have visited the board to know this
- Christo88, on 09/11/2008, -0/+22I flipped a coin and dugg your comment, in all the other universes you were buried.
- peaceninja, on 09/11/2008, -4/+25Dr. S.R. Hadden: "First rule in government spending: why build one when you can have two at twice the price?" *hysterical laughter*
- wonderchemist, on 09/10/2008, -1/+22Surely there have been ion-neutral collisions within the storage ring itself.
- thedez, on 09/11/2008, -0/+19Follow Freeman
- airwalkery2k, on 09/11/2008, -0/+19So, don't worry black hole fans, the world can still end.
- drakenlot, on 09/11/2008, -1/+19Maybe by turning it on, we effectively destroyed every other universe.
Our coin turned up heads, so we built it while every other universe didn't.
/Futurama reference - bicyclethief, on 09/11/2008, -1/+18I have the worst hangover. Thanks a lot Large Hadron Collider for not ending the world.
- MarrowMan, on 09/11/2008, -1/+17it's already sucked us into another reality, we just don't know it yet.

- IronPwnage, on 09/11/2008, -0/+14October 21st people!
- inactive, on 09/11/2008, -1/+15Damn, I was actually kind of hoping my life would cease to exist today.
- pagno, on 09/10/2008, -0/+13"...it's important that they are kept in the loop."
This pun makes up for the grammar mistakes in the article. :) - inactive, on 09/11/2008, -0/+13Apparently you guys must have visited it too.
- television, on 09/11/2008, -1/+14Didn't you guys know that! .... LOL - It'll take at LEAST 30 days for the world to end.
- vimbuza, on 09/11/2008, -1/+13They have to get it to 88 miles per 4.7326076668244202555608140085187e-4 seconds, actually.
- chubbybubba, on 09/11/2008, -0/+12NO! just stay where you're at and keep diggin.

DUN DUN DUN - geoboy, on 09/11/2008, -0/+11Looks like all we'll have to do is disable Javascript and we'll be fine.
- gwyrth, on 09/11/2008, -0/+11I bet Google will have their own collider up and running soon.
- gravyboy, on 09/11/2008, -0/+10It is good that there are a lot of websites telling us whether or not the world has ended.
:-D
I got suspicious when I read an article saying "These sorts of collisions occur thousands of times a day" and then another one which said "the LHC will create collisions at intensities that haven't been seen in 14 billion years."
Can anyone tell me which one is true? - ICSU, on 09/11/2008, -0/+10I choose death by snoo snoo.
- theviceroy, on 09/11/2008, -0/+10Collider Beta
- Zemenar, on 09/11/2008, -0/+10I never leave home without it.
- ByteGuerilla, on 09/11/2008, -0/+9Considering the joke is from Futurama, I don't think he's going to care much.
