- allowners, on 03/21/2008, -3/+62I'll send my address to anybody who would like to cheer themselves up.
- Spelvin, on 03/21/2008, -4/+30I derive my pleasure from not being in debt...
- bsletten, on 03/21/2008, -1/+26While money can't buy happiness, it certainly lets you choose your own form of misery
-- Groucho Marx - diggdiggerid, on 03/21/2008, -4/+26Well yeah if you have lots of money to give away you are probably living very comfortably (I don't mean luxuriously) already, whereas if you're struggling on minimum wage and can't afford your monthly rent much less donations to charities you probably wouldn't be very happy.
- FriedTurkey, on 03/21/2008, -2/+10Does channeling all your hate towards religion make you happier?
- tiraid, on 03/21/2008, -0/+7Maybe that's why the government likes to take money from me and give it away! The government must be unhappy. I think I'd rather give my own money away.
- VinceNoir, on 03/21/2008, -0/+7Never gonna give you up!
Never gonna let you down
Never gonna run around and desert you
Never gonna make you cry
Never gonna say goodbye
Never gonna tell a lie and hurt you - tibetsong, on 03/21/2008, -0/+6Will Bill Gates be the happiest guy in the world?
- FriedTurkey, on 03/21/2008, -2/+8I am waiting for some Ayn Rand zombie to state that self-actualization doesn't exist and that path to happiness is being a selfish bastard. It is funny to look at Ayn Rand's life and see how happy she was.
- Chahrlie5, on 03/21/2008, -0/+4Considering he's given away billions, he must be pretty freaking happy
- dafragsta, on 03/21/2008, -0/+4That's not exactly a double blind test either. If they'd just given them the money and not said anything, they would've spent it on themselves. Adding "... or you can spend it on someone else." greatly skews the results.
- airiox, on 03/21/2008, -1/+5Tell the government to give your money back then. They think you can't spend it more wisely than them?
Also no matter how poor you are, you can give of your time. Which makes you more happy than giving of your wealth. - bdbr, on 03/21/2008, -0/+3I'd have been shocked NOT to have seen this comment.
- XxtraLarGe, on 03/21/2008, -0/+3Funny you should mention that. Almost every other version of this story is titled along the lines of "Science, Bible agree: Giving is Better than Receiving". You can find 20+ articles in the news today with a similar titles:
http://news.search.yahoo.com/news/search?p=bible+s ...
I found it odd that the one article that made the front page was the Live Science link, which fails to mention the comparison anywhere. - cshaaban, on 03/21/2008, -3/+6Bah humbug.
- thinkinblissful, on 03/21/2008, -0/+3My friend and I give money back and forth each day. We live in bliss!
- bshock, on 03/21/2008, -0/+3Strange. I happen to know for a fact that not having enough money to pay my mortgage makes me sad.
- morningmatters, on 03/21/2008, -0/+3I go to charity events sometimes and yes, these big donors are for the most part darn happy because most of them don't have to struggle with their finances which would make just about anyone unhappy. Giving away money also strokes their ego and gives them a purpose in life. For most of us our goal is to make money, but if you take money out of the equation then that purpose is lost. Giving away money is alot like feeding your helpless pet, it makes you feel good, superior, and in control.
- iloveazngurlzs, on 03/21/2008, -0/+3yea. I love it when i can provide great gifts for people. Giving is great, but hard to do until you actually do it
- bliz, on 03/21/2008, -0/+3It's like regurgitating your food so you can eat it again. =)
- Shawn4168, on 03/21/2008, -2/+4I've been on both sides of the issue as well, and I have to say that giving money away, even while you're in debt, is the way to go. It doesn't have to be much, but it's certainly a good step toward learning how to budget your money better. Knowing consciously that there are better things that I should be doing with my money than buying that video game that I'll play for a day and never touch again, has done wonders to help my perspective, and to help me get out of debt faster.
- noahhoward, on 03/21/2008, -0/+2Cheapskate.
- noahhoward, on 03/21/2008, -0/+2I disagree with your conclusion. It is safe to say being clubbed over the head with a tire iron and having your belongings stolen is a new experience for most people, but I doubt losing your tire-iron virginity is a happy experience.
- inactive, on 03/21/2008, -1/+3so what's your address?
- bdbr, on 03/21/2008, -0/+2One important thing the article pointed out is that you don't even have to give that much to feel good about it. I've noticed that it feels pretty good when I give a busker a dollar...but a dollar isn't going to make that much difference in my life.
- XxtraLarGe, on 03/21/2008, -0/+2Here's a working link.

Digg clips links way too short. - specialK16, on 03/21/2008, -1/+3lol. It's been a fun morning today.
- Mootabolife, on 03/21/2008, -2/+4Churches find a balance in taking peoples money.
- ladyarcher85, on 03/21/2008, -0/+2people should start linking another video
- noahhoward, on 03/21/2008, -0/+2But think how much more pleasure you could derive from ensuring I'm not in debt either. Someone has to receive damnit.
- synwolf, on 03/21/2008, -0/+2RTFA - they gave $5 - $20 to college students and told them to either spend it on themselves or spend it on someone else. They most certainly did not poll rich philanthropists.
- MentalHazard, on 03/21/2008, -0/+2When people are taught from a very young age that they don't deserve everything they make of course it's going to make them FEEL good if they give away money. Does that actually make you better off? Usually not.
- styxtraveler, on 03/21/2008, -1/+3the real reason this works.
http://www.flicks-comic.com/Home.asp?ComicIndex=98 - breez, on 03/21/2008, -0/+2The problem is, we're all in so much debt because we buy so much frivolous junk for ourselves.
- diggdiggerid, on 03/21/2008, -0/+2I forgot what the name of the effect is, but it's been shown that studies are changed by the fact that participants are aware they are being studied. If someone said to you here do "good" option A or "bad" option B by the way we're going to study your answer and have your name and address you would choose option A.
- OneLess, on 03/21/2008, -0/+2Thank god for Digg. Today I learned that surviving on minimum wage sucks.
- inactive, on 03/21/2008, -0/+1Giving away money make me sad and depressed.
- KingGorilla, on 03/21/2008, -0/+1yeah, college was such a spontaneous decision
- dafragsta, on 03/21/2008, -0/+1Not that I'm a heartless bastard who doesn't donate a buck to charity at checkout or who doesn't buy people gifts at Christmas time, but I bought myself a Fender Roadhouse Strat this week. That made me feel pretty ***** cheery. I think either the description or the article are filled with truthiness.
- elliotys, on 03/21/2008, -0/+1Bill Gates is very happy, but I think Warren Buffet (who just surpassed Gates)is ***** ecstatic
- breez, on 03/21/2008, -0/+1Yeah, and most home owners are "in debt" for their homes. But I was thinking more along the limes of the $9000 average American credit card debt (and thats an old stat) . I don't know about you but I have spent plenty of money on stuff I didn't really need.
- elliotys, on 03/21/2008, -0/+1Sweet, now I just need to get some money.
- KingWiqid, on 03/21/2008, -0/+1I bet the liberals are salivating over this one - If giving makes you feel so happy - then how come all the money that leaves my paycheck and finds its way to the welfare department dont make me happy? I'm sure Id be happier with a new XBOX game that I earned with my own money than supporting ding dongs for women that dont know how to keep their legs closed or keep a job. - here - go ahead and use my shovel ......
- edwartica, on 03/21/2008, -0/+1ice ice baby!
- Danikar, on 03/21/2008, -0/+1Heh, well for a lot of people who went to college just because thats what they thought they were suppose to do, you might be able to consider their education frivolous.
- noahhoward, on 03/21/2008, -0/+1Gratitude and perhaps, depending on how you use that money, returning the gesture. If a donor gives you the money to start a business and you make a better life for yourself because of it, return their gift and make one of your own either to them or by donating to someone else.
Of course if you have no money and someone gives you a fiver, you can go get material hapiness. - KingWiqid, on 03/21/2008, -0/+1goverment takes so much money so they can pay for the flood of welfare checks that are handed out on mothers day
- tiraid, on 03/21/2008, -0/+1Luckily for me, I have someone like you here to save me!
Your assumptions are crap. "we ALL know you wouldn't give it away at all." Yes. We "ALL" know that. Piss off, jerk. You don't know me, you know nothing about me, nor do you have any clue what everyone else here knows. I don't care what libertarians "TEND" to have. Let me tell you what you tend to have. You tend to have your nose in other peoples business and you tend to make sweeping generalities. Never mind that US citizens gives more than the citizens of any other nation. Never mind that the rich people you abhor give to charities like it's going out of style. You can't have a million in this country without a foundation for something. But, you know better, don't you? What are your consulting rates? I get a paycheck next Friday, and I just don't think I'm smart enough to be entrusted with the responsibility. Save me! Save me! - inactive, on 03/21/2008, -1/+2Having been on both sides of this issue, I couldn't agree more.
