- inactive, on 10/26/2008, -1/+45I've noticed this too, my friends who use the Internet a lot, tend to be a good deal 'quicker'.
- johnnick, on 10/26/2008, -0/+39That explains the speed of responses on Digg and the level of compromise between divergent opinions.
- b4uplayball, on 10/26/2008, -1/+22That does not compute!!!
- FurtThePirate, on 10/27/2008, -1/+21Well put. But I have to disagree with you for no reason other than to be able to post a reply before anyone else.
- MacBookForMe, on 10/26/2008, -1/+19I am still missing the speed factor, though...:)
- tanmaker, on 10/27/2008, -1/+16In related news, the internet decreases productivity at work.
- alenox, on 10/27/2008, -1/+16I always find myself trying to hit Control "F" when studying a textbook...
- ryanhayn, on 10/27/2008, -0/+15I agree with them having a broader base of knowledge, but the knowledge doesn't run very deep. It's more 'on the surface', main idea less details type knowledge. Well, that's how it is with me anyway. Maybe I'm just ADHD.
- inactive, on 10/27/2008, -1/+14Is this why I ejaculate prematurely?
- frieddonuts, on 10/27/2008, -0/+13I don't know about being faster but the stuff I learn on the internet seems to stick with me much longer, and internet users seem to have a broader base of knowledge than people who don't use it much, in my experience. Looking at the average Digg user, it doesn't mean they're smarter ;)
- AboveandBeyond, on 10/27/2008, -1/+13It works! I'm already bored.
- built2spill, on 10/26/2008, -1/+13I agree, but what about the ADD?
- Devilboy666, on 10/27/2008, -0/+12I noticed recently that I'm now addicted to having all that information from the intarwebs on my fingertips all the time.
- Trekhawk, on 10/26/2008, -2/+12Darn right it speeds up decision making. You can debate between fap-ing material all day.
- kangy3213, on 10/27/2008, -0/+9not if you have dial up
- inactive, on 10/27/2008, -1/+9i knew it, i'm a genius
- Ne007, on 10/27/2008, -3/+11***** empathy.
- Symington, on 10/27/2008, -0/+8Ya I'm the same... I'm conversant on a ton of topics, but haven't delved into the details on very many. The thing is, both are necessary... too many specialists and there's no one to coordinate cooperation. Too many jack of all trades and no deep learning gets done.
- BigE56, on 10/27/2008, -1/+8It's all because of porn.
- Devilboy666, on 10/27/2008, -1/+8It's because you touch yourself at night
- milomilomilo, on 10/27/2008, -0/+7I'll say one thing the internet definitely has done for me.
It's made me realize how irrational some of the people around me are.
When first coming online if posting in threads or forums where there was a debate about some topic, I'd get called on points that prior to communicating online, where ***** can be checked, hyperbole isn't acceptable, and a person making the most logical statement is usually the winner, as compared to irl where its very often the opposite.
Made me learn some logical rules that showed me where I was wrong in many places about many thing, as well as the people around me.
Unfortunately, talking to people in the same manner irl as we do online (even when we think we are not being rude dicks) doesn't work out very well. I used to think the idea of being able to get addicted to internet was pure *****, but I can see how its possible.
communicating online is simpler, ***** can be fact checked, it lacks the nuances of in person interactions that take up our attention. we cut through the ***** online.
irl you are sorta required to take the ***** as part of the communication process.
I think thats why tennagers and people in their mid 20's-30's seem like serious douchebags these days... they arn't really, just used to cutting through the *****.....
*****, I have no idea where I'm going with this at all.. O_o - itsjakelyon, on 10/27/2008, -1/+8FRIENDSSS.
- GuacamoleSan, on 10/27/2008, -0/+6Lol @ decreases empathy.
Feelings? I HAVE NO FEELINGS! - AlaskaLoneWolf, on 10/26/2008, -1/+7Maybe it'll speed up interaction to members
of the political world who seem to be so disengauged from
the regular, run of the mill citizen who is rather pissed off. - spaceman84, on 10/27/2008, -0/+6I definitely agree with the loss of empathy. Though there is some debate as to whether I really had any to begin with.
- thePTS, on 10/27/2008, -0/+6"but it comes at the expense of empathy"
Oh hai there /b/! - ryanhayn, on 10/27/2008, -1/+6This is why you browse the internet and smoke herb at the same time.
- spaceman84, on 10/27/2008, -0/+5Ah yes, "speeds down". I'd forgotten about that phenomenon.
- Pablitos, on 10/27/2008, -0/+5Not surprised about the finding that using the internet reduces your empathy because you notice people don't give a s*** nowdays and it's funny how The Internet is more popular than ever, could well be to do with brainwaves
- serif69, on 10/27/2008, -0/+5Buried because I disagree with you divergent viewpoint.
- Hanzolot, on 10/27/2008, -1/+6Stronghold Crusader!
- inactive, on 10/27/2008, -1/+6Who do I snipe? The Heavy destroying my buddy's Sentry or the Medic who has an Ubercharge ready.
- expertninja, on 10/27/2008, -0/+5It's not just you two, the internet breeds that kind of learning. However, the broader the scope of one's knowledge, the better decision making skills one will develop. I've noticed that the immediacy of the internet has made me horribly impatient, things taking longer that 30 milliseconds seem inexorably long.
- SpykerSpeed, on 10/27/2008, -0/+5The internet annoys bookworms and old people because anybody can research anything in minutes without having to scour through a library's microfiche for seven hours.
- bnedelcov, on 10/26/2008, -4/+9All your bases are belong to us
- Symington, on 10/27/2008, -0/+5ya... I just spent 4 days in silence at a meditation retreat and my info-addict mind was racing racing racing to make up for the lack of input... it didn't settle down until the fourth day, when I promptly went back online and made up for lost time.
Sri Sri Ravi Shankar says that our minds are like ponds... the less traffic there is, the less muddy the waters.
Best to find a balance, I guess. - tashtego67, on 10/27/2008, -0/+4I call *****. The headline would have been more accurate had it read "Performing internet searches stimulates areas of the brain associated with decision making but does not appear to stimulate areas associated with empathy and abstract thinking." That's all you can really say based on what they studied. The rest is pure speculation. The study didn't look at the brains of people using Skype, Facebook, playing wow, reading newsgroups, watching youtube or anything but internet searches. Nor does the fact, if true, that googling something doesn't stimulate your emapthy centers mean that you are doomed to be less empathetic if you use google. I'll bet that area doesn't light up when you cut your lawn or fold laundry either. The research itself is interesting but the conclusions are ludicrous.
- serif69, on 10/27/2008, -0/+4I disagree. Sure we spend less time working, but we work faster now thanks to the internet.
- inactive, on 10/27/2008, -2/+5u lose empathy and abstract thinking. ok, time to cut back on screen time. and u know the flicker is designed to put you in a deep trance, where youre more suggestible.
- Skooma714, on 10/27/2008, -1/+4***** yes that game ruled.
Stronghold 2 was made of lag and disappointment though - inactive, on 10/27/2008, -0/+3yea, i work faster to come right back
- Symington, on 10/27/2008, -0/+3disengaged
- wantguru, on 10/27/2008, -0/+3ignoring or focusing on information. fingers are busy.
- kimbja98, on 10/27/2008, -1/+4The medic of course! The sentry may be destroyed, but a team of 2 or 3 engineers can rebuild it quite quickly. Meanwhile, you've made the opposition wait another minute to get a new ubercharge.
Also, then snipe the slow moving heavy. The sentry would have already removed some of his health and he is slow when firing, so you can take him out easily...so the answer is both:p The last thing you want to do is snipe at a heavy/medic combo who release an ubercharge as that's just pointless, so taking out the medic (and heavy's source of health) first is a better option! - guabancex, on 10/27/2008, -0/+3Dugg because I support your democratic right to a divergent viewpoint.
- OddMoniker, on 10/27/2008, -2/+5Aaaannnnddd...John McCain admitted he doesn't use the internet. Thoughts?
- MicrosoftBob, on 10/27/2008, -1/+4I don't care what you think and am going to click the red button.
- inactive, on 10/27/2008, -0/+3Lets all take a moment and think fondly of the inventor of the internet, Al Gore...God rest his soul
- Symington, on 10/27/2008, -1/+4thank god I'm not the only one
- Gambit89, on 10/28/2008, -0/+2Dugg. You've put into words what's been in my head for a while.
