- just_chris, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3> Where's the great wall of china, its
> said that it can be seen from space, but
> I don't see it. FAKE.
That's another urban legend.
http://www.snopes.com/science/greatwal.htm
According to a shuttle astronaut, "We look for the Great Wall of China. Although we can see things as small as airport runways, the Great Wall seems to be made largely of materials that have the same color as the surrounding soil. Despite persistent stories that it can be seen from the moon, the Great Wall is almost invisible from only 180 miles up!" - Observer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"That is a nice picture.
From up there the world looks like a such a peaceful, tranquil place."
Then you Zoom in with google earth and you see all the Chaos - Devnull, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1That is a nice picture.
From up there the world looks like a such a peaceful, tranquil place. - slowspin, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2They're the only countries who can afford snow.
- brandon.fulk, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Why is everyone asking about where the cloud cover went, no questions about the lack of darkness?
- KevQuinn, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Its a perfect panorama. I dropped it into Apple's Make Cubic program and got an awesome Cubic VR movie from it!!!
- Googled, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1typical...the uk has no snow...but we have no problem getting the rain!!!
- ateoto, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Can't edit, so I'll post again. Look at the color of blue by the Bahamas (Near Floriday) That's just gorgeous. It looks amazing from an Airplane, and its amazing when you're in the water, but it's just beautiful from space. Too bad humans live on this planet.
- t35t0r, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1How was the cloud cover removed?
- pophysis, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1It is not "winter" every where. duh!
- NSXROX, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1There's no lines where the state and country borders are! It must be a FAKE.
- kwilliam71, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Earth IS flat! I knew it!
- avtomat, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I'll never look at steak the same...
- wolfger, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Yeah... Is that a Northern hemisphere winter, or a Southern hemisphere winter? Some people just don't get the concept of globalization...
- antoniojvr, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0It's the nicest weather Earth has ever seen!
- jeraboam, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Here is the URL for the NASA page that has links to that picture plus others and a movie.
http://www.nasa.gov/vision/earth/features/blue_marble.html
Note though that NASA calls this a "photo-like mosaic" of Spectroradiometer data.
Still awesome - bwiney, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0where is all the civilization? major cities shouldn't be brown or green, they should be gray or white.
- MikeDawg, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I think this should be modified to say Space in Winter '04 (relative to N. Hemisphere). Think about the relationship of looking at the planet, and saying "Winter".
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0You can't see the great wall from space.
- jk_baller23, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I can see my house, lol. It was a joke for some that are slow.
- Hamsterpotpies, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0LOL. good find
+Digg - mikataur, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0> Australia looks like moldy steak.
Nah, more like a shrimp on a barbie! - gherikill, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Sweet, all of the rich countries are covered in snow.
- aresef, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0It's more accurate to call it global climate change.
Amazing pic. Consider yourself dugg. - netnerd, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0It's fascinating to see the snow line in all the different countries (that have one). I had no idea that it looked that way.
The other cool thing is the light blue sea in the carribean. I don't know what that is, but it looks pretty neat.
Definitely dugg. - mercury81, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1yah I can see your house too, FIRE THE SPACE LASER!
- ateoto, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Thats beautiful.
- mucko, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Sorry, I hate to do this but I feel the need as this is one of my pet peeves. The apostrophe needs to go in FRONT of the "04" as in '04 -- not 04'.
In a contraction the apostrophe signifies a character or characters is omitted.
can't == cannot
he'll == he will
'04 == 2004 - JohnJacob, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Australia looks like moldy steak.
- ebenthurston, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0wicked awesome
- teh_techie, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0That's pretty neato. Dugged it
- aggrazel, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Thats where I keep all my stuff.
- mucko, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0that is, "In a contraction the apostrophe signifies a character or characters ARE omitted."
- infra172, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0This was only a year ago! Half of the Earth was covered with ice! Now look how hot it is! It's global warming!
- atbnet, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Global warming is fake.
Where the the reef you are supposed to be able to see from space. The Barrier Reef near Australia. - furtive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Everyone mentions the absence of clouds, but am I the only one to notice the absence of ice? The North West Passage and above should be a solid block. The Hudson Bay all the way down to Churchill Manitoba should be a big ice flow. The St-Lawrence seaway should be jammed.
- cuoops, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0This video is part of this picture. The white parts on the US are exactly the same.
http://www.nasa.gov/mpg/136022main_BlueMarbleTour_320x240.mpg - vileS, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Ah. There's Waldo.
- bsoric, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Where are the words so we know which country's which? :P
- kobie, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0absolute crap what happened to egypt this has been censored
no digg!! - =SpanK=, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Although..... it IS on the NASA site.
Ok thats it. Everyone says its fake, this side of the line! Everyone says its real... i still think your wrong. :) - ArtVandelay, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Thanks to Jeraboam for posting the link to the Blue Marble project. The image I dugg is part of a bigger production from NASA, and this was the highlight, I think.
- p00p, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0obviously, 01 2004 means january, 2004.
- Verisimilitude, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0While this may not be a FAKE,
It is not a photo or a photo mosaic. It is a 3d rendered picture of interpreted data.
Even combining IR and Telephoto lens shots would not get you this good, or complete, a picture. There are many places in the world, including in the US, that even NASA cannot take photo recon shots of. On top of that you would see city structure even from way up there, at least all the astronauts comment about it. :P - TheNik, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Veri has it right, although I never understood why people think the Earth is a private place.
- jgjonola, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Umm. I find Google Earth (or Keyhole) much more interesting.
- spyhunter, on 10/12/2007, -0/+01. You can't see cities because each pixel of this image is nearly 10 miles across. Even a huge city only covers a few pixels. For example Los Angeles is approximately 500 square miles according to Wikipedia, therefore it takes up about 5 pixels of this image. Those 5 pixels will be dull gray, because that's what color cities turn out to be when you look at them from far away. Good luck finding LA's 5 gray pixels among the 14 million others.
2. You can't see the Great Wall of China from space with your naked eye; that's a myth (even the Chinese astronaut admitted he could not see it). However, astronauts looking out their windows get a view that's better than this image, so they can see things like cities that don't show up well in this image.
3. There are no clouds because they were removed by NASA. The image is a mosaic of thousands of pictures taken by satellite at different times, then color corrected and joined. Every place on Earth had multiple pictures taken and NASA chose the ones without clouds for the mosaic. They also removed the sea ice, I'm not sure why. You can get versions of the old Blue Marble image with or without sea ice. - comrademikhail, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0If I'm correct in thinking that the number in the file name is the date, it was taken January 20th, 04.. But then again it's more likely it means January 2004, because this picture is probably a compilation of many pictures, like mentioned before.
Great picture, too. -
