- jake0713, on 10/12/2007, -7/+25George Bush and his administration will not put money into stem cell research (or even allow it) because of their close minded religious beliefs.
I guarantee that if any of the Bush's were afflicted with some horrible disease that could be cured by stem cells technology the mindset would change very very fast. - adml_shake, on 10/12/2007, -3/+20Wow, my X is gonna be glad to hear about that! She's been saying for months that I don't have one...
- wpholmes, on 10/12/2007, -4/+20This makes me so angry that the people in charge (at least in the USA) are hindering stem cell research. Why can't they open their eyes and see how promising it is?
- JohnboiWaltune, on 10/12/2007, -4/+14These people (Christians) have been against every major medical advance in the past 5 centuries... even stuff like basic hygiene, autopsies, and organ transplants... you name it, and there's a group of religious freaks who wanted to ban it because it goes against God. The U.S. is basically the last first world nation where fundamentalist Christianity is able to influence government policy. So there you have it.
- galisus, on 10/12/2007, -2/+11And a woman will still rip it out..
- lnxaddct, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10Wow you're way off. We're already growing lots of portions of organs, including skin, ears, and lungs. We're literally like 5 to 7 years (maybe even sooner) from clinical trials. By 2020 or so, donor lists are going to be a thing of the past. In the beginning of 1903, nearly everyone agreed that heavier than air flight was impossible. At the end of 1903, they were proven wrong. By 1910, the first commercial airflight was made. Since then mass transportation, fighting in the air, and even the next step of leaving the planet have all taken place. We've now got probes at the furthest reaches of our solar system. They pace of technological advances are continuing to speed up. Take the world wide web for instance which changed the face of the global economy in under a decade. Or cell phones, in about a 5 year period, cell phones went from huge expensive bricks to small, affordable devices that even a good chunk of homeless people own (at least in the states, and iirc japan). We've also got the human genome mapped now and our understanding of the human is getterig better by the day. I don't think you understand trends or technological progress because I think you're going to be pleasantly surprised.
- ByteGuerilla, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10He may have spelt 'religious' wrong, but you know he's right.
- Stevethegreat, on 10/12/2007, -2/+10Progress happens faster from sci-fi movies on some aspects while slower on others. There are things on Star Trek for example that already have been surpassed while others that would be a hard way to go.
- Chakz, on 10/12/2007, -6/+142021? No Chance.
Human Life will end in 2012.
An asteroid is gonna hit the Earth in 2026.
We've been using flying cars and living on the moon since 2000.
I wish people would stop trying to predict the future.
/satire - Marfanity, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9Hopefully my new heart won't be as black and cold as my old one.
- Osjpr, on 10/12/2007, -3/+9Damn fine point there. Pisses me off too. Can't overstate it. They're the luddites of biotech.
- Galaxion, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7We do have those things... they are just expensive and impractical.
- JohnboiWaltune, on 10/12/2007, -6/+12It won't be an asteroid. Jesus will return on his spaceship in 2012 to kill us all. Get your facts straight and stop spreading baseless conjectures.
- qster, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5I'm sure John Wayne Bobbitt will be interested in this.
- Osjpr, on 10/12/2007, -5/+10Why this gets down-modded is the sign of wilful and blind ignorance.....very sad that many will die because of delays due to these people.
- mikesum32, on 10/12/2007, -7/+11In the year 5555
Your arms hangin' limp at your sides
Your legs got nothin' to do
Some machine's doing that for you - zirtbow, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6Yes, this will be just like the flying cars and jetpacks we were supposed to have around the year 2000. Oh wait.. all I got was a cell phone.
- funpet, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4In 1903, most birds probably didn't agree that heavier than air flight was impossible.
- Syntaxis, on 10/12/2007, -6/+10Now it's only time until religeous nuts try to prevent this, of course.
- Stevethegreat, on 10/12/2007, -4/+7Also we are not supposed to have all this terchnology we already have. Do you know why Earth's G is such a big number, because we were not supposed to go off the planet, only we did. Eons now we defy the rules that surround us, what makes you believe we won't defy that one too.
- onehalf, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Where will we be?
Underneath the water, at the bottom of the sea - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Cantankerous,
This isn't about longevity, it's about quality of life. Those of us living with chronic progressive diseases and are only in our thirties could benefit from this research. Should we not try to help people that live in daily pain? - cheddar, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3With Murphy as our leader and Stormy accidentally blowing up the lab. Also, we'll all be Stimutax junkies...
- tallgreen, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Could you please provide more information? Why is this science fiction? How far off do *you* think it is? Do you disagree with this statement:
"We're already growing lots of portions of organs, including skin, ears, and lungs. We're literally like 5 to 7 years (maybe even sooner) from clinical trials." -- lnxaddct - Inthearmor, on 10/12/2007, -3/+6Sweet! Now I just need adamantium claws, and I'll be Wolverine!
- phaed, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2@gregcotten
visit www.imaReligiousNutInDenial.com - nexxuz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2And by 2021 I will be called the great Barbobot!!!
- ender52, on 10/12/2007, -7/+9Yeah, and nobody will ever need more than 640k of ram either.
Progress happens fast, just not as fast as in sci-fi movies. - funpet, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3cancer == cells that don't die.
If we as humans don't die, doesn't that make us cancer? - cantankerous, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Sorry, I'll refrain from making such comments on a topic so serious. Please accept my sincerest apologies.
- tylerman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1in 2021 I will be under the sea!
- SnaKe09, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1bad actors and a ***** story-line?
- ksgant, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4Yes, for one we don't even have anything approaching the power and sentience of HAL. Though we certainly have smaller computers than HAL.
- troon, on 10/12/2007, -4/+5You mean you don't have your flying car and silver suit yet?
- blairkincaide, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2"Progress happens faster from sci-fi movies on some aspects while slower on others. There are things on Star Trek for example that already have been surpassed while others that would be a hard way to go."
I'm pretty sure those communicators said NEXTEL on the back. - tallgreen, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1That cancer is like junkies or people who criminally rely on disability claims. It already exists, and it's eradication is a separate issue. It's not due to overpopulation, it's due to social deficiencies. Everyone just wants to be happy and accepted. If they could effortlessly contribute, they would. Cancer cells *cause* problems by contributing. The solution is not to kill all the social delinquents, the anology is not seamless.
- WaterDragon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"cancer == cells that don't die.
If we as humans don't die, doesn't that make us cancer?"
I've always seen it more like:
Cancer (tumors) = cells that over-reproduce.
Thus, people who have too many children are like social cancers!
The greed and lack of awareness-- of deliberately producing a 'large family", is a kind of social littering!
But I guess we'll keep having wars --in order to correct the problematic situation.
Disgusting! - Lodarage, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2@Chakz:
It was a part from the lyrics of "Zager & Evans - In The Year 2525"... - Sukino, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1This really won't help to solve the ageing problem.
- WaterDragon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Grow a new heart, huh? I bet someone is expriimenting with starfish DNA.
(You can cut a starfsh in five pieces, and as long as each piece as part of the center section, it will regenerate into five starfish. ...but which one is the original?)
I am remembering a StarTrek movie where an old woman in a (20th century, Earth) hospital says "Doctor (McCoy) gave me a pill and I grew a new kidney."
Great...just what we need...more selfish, creepy old people, staying around for longer. Way to devolve the human race! - mckirkus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Yeah but you'll also be able to cut off some of her hair and grow a new girlfriend in your bathtub.
- phelonius, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3a) there havent been any humans on earth since eons
b) if we shouldn't have these technologies (which i guess you mean was 'gods' will), why should he have given us the brains and a thumb to use tools?
c) go back to your amish clan and harvest some wheat - mckirkus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Me want new brain,
- adml_shake, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Lol, I don't give a ***** what she things now! And I really didn't then either...
- AeonTorpor, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Hahah, turn those months into a couple of years and this tech will be obsolete. Not because it will be done, just cuz you won't give a ***** what she thinks; the basis of all meaningful relationships. :P
- Fhajad, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I think it's more likly that i become the King of Enland than someone grow a new heart by 2021.
- tallgreen, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Yeah, and they also don't maken certain rich people richer.
- pauldonnelly, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I think it does that already.
- friskekd, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0on behalf of all drunk college students i'm hoping to grow a new liver
- Lazrius, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Reminds me of "The Island"
