- gordonliu, on 01/14/2009, -0/+0this has absolutely NOTHING to do with the MRI found in your local hospital. it is more appropriate to call this NMR. MRI is a "fake" name that is used to keep patients from getting scared (if they heard NUCLEAR they would be afraid of MRI).
this technology will be used to study semiconductor structures, supramolecular host-guest complexes, carbon/boron-nitride nanotubes and fullerene nano-complexes, rotaxanes/catenanes....
this will be used for nanotechnoloy.
atomic resolution has NOTHING TO DO with this breakthrough.
the breakthrough is 3D information.
STM, AFM, and SEM all give atomic resolution. STM is routinely used to image the DOS of molecules (the molecular orbitals, or the electron probability density, density of states; all appear the same under the tunneling current)
AFM is routinely used to study the orientation and arrangment of metal atoms on surfaces (metal atoms are big as hell)
SEM can give 10 nm resolution, which can image most molecules with MW greater than 200 (which is small).
the great part about this is that you can take a 3d cross section of a silicon semiconductor, of an organic thin film LED (the stuff that Sony uses to make those 8mm thick 1080p tvs), of some super organic supramolecular complex (the stuff currently researched to make molecular machines and molecular memory).
let me reiterate this THIS TECHNOLOGY WILL NEVER SEE USE IN A HOSPITAL. IT WILL NEVER BE USED TO STUDY THE HUMAN BODY.
it cant even be used to study human tissue, because NMR works by imaging a single TYPE of nucleus (hydrogen, nitrogen, phosphorous, fluorine, oxygen, etc, BUT ONLY 1 AT A TIME)
MRI typically looks at oxygen (water).
