- jikalx, on 07/14/2008, -1/+32Hunger makes me grumpy. I think this article was written to be a little sensationalist. Hunger releases ghrelin which reduces stress. This would have helped our ancestors find food and was selected for.
Saying ghrelin makes you happy is a stretch. People suffering from anorexia nervosa have high levels of plasma ghrelin and a symptom of the disease is depression. Saying hunger makes you happy is quite an oversimplification. - bobby2010, on 07/14/2008, -2/+25It's opposite with me!
- acmaurer, on 07/14/2008, -1/+17But what if you're hungry and can't stop stressing out about where you'll get your next meal? Will it still be a stress-buster??
- ironeus, on 08/01/2008, -1/+17That guy in the photo is about to lose all his ghrelin, but in return he'll gain about 29 grams of fat & 540 calories.
- hdar3415, on 07/14/2008, -0/+13Sex will make you happier.
- chibimmy, on 07/14/2008, -0/+12A risk delicious enough worth taking.
- tonaros, on 07/14/2008, -1/+12This could easily be a substantial part of how Marijuana works. I'd like to see more research on the subject.
- tylercomp, on 07/14/2008, -0/+9Hunger doesn't really make me mad but I know a ton of people that become filled with rage if they are hungry.
- mikedoth, on 07/14/2008, -0/+8And sleepier.
- booyahbitch, on 07/14/2008, -0/+5OO, OO, I volunteer!!!!
- gskill, on 07/14/2008, -0/+5Hunger makes me sad lol.
- kaamran, on 07/14/2008, -0/+5True; there are disadvantages of eating to kill your hunger.
It is always advisable to stop eating when you still have space for more..... - TheWebSwinger, on 07/14/2008, -0/+4This is why anorexics are the happiest people I know. Somewhere, somehow, Nicole Richie just did a cartwheel..
- JakeW, on 07/14/2008, -0/+4Fair trade
- johanm, on 07/14/2008, -0/+3this study was brought to you by the producers of corn based ethanol
- inactive, on 07/14/2008, -0/+3That is why people tend to eat when stressed. Better coping strategies for yourself are just a thought away.
- borez, on 07/14/2008, -0/+3Well I guess, they way things are going, we're all gonna be ecstatic in the future.
- CoreyHalliwell, on 07/14/2008, -3/+6Maybe the happiness arises from knowing that by not eating so much, you won't become such a fat bastard.
- Haoie, on 07/15/2008, -1/+4Yes, usually a lack of food makes people sluggish, irritable, if not depressed outright.
- inactive, on 07/15/2008, -0/+3depends on if it's consensual or not.......
- BlackJackJester, on 07/14/2008, -0/+3So Africa is the new Disneyland? Something doesn't add up.
- PilotHead, on 07/15/2008, -0/+2Those starving kid in China must be ***** thrilled then -.-....
- FreeTalkLIve, on 07/14/2008, -0/+2Religious people fast because they are addicted to ghrelin.
Everyone is addicted to somthing. - ChrisshEnzo, on 07/15/2008, -0/+2i believe this article is inaccurate. if you take a course in psychology one thing you learn is people become much more irritable, disagreeable, sluggish, etc. when they have not eaten this is an evolutionary trait that alerts us there is an imbalance in our system. conversely, the moments leading up to eating you experience a burst of dopamine, a chemical in the brain which creates pleasure, making eating a pleasurable experience.
- nerdherder, on 07/14/2008, -0/+2Hunger get what hunger wants.
- inactive, on 07/15/2008, -0/+2So all those poor starving people in Ethiopia are really enjoying themselves? They giggle when they see the flies land on their children while they share a dirt cookie. I think the ***** who wrote this needs to starve for a few weeks and then write a "happy article".
- 10lbhammer, on 07/14/2008, -0/+2hunger makes me grumpy too.
I call it: hangry - Antz0rz, on 07/15/2008, -0/+2I get highly pissed when I havent eaten in a while.
- blorguehad, on 07/14/2008, -0/+2So did they rescue the [non-swimming] mice?
- bozodaclown51, on 07/14/2008, -0/+2yeah but there are a lot more factors than just plain old hunger at play when you're talking about anorexia
- Khangwin, on 07/15/2008, -0/+2coooool... but id rather be fat and sad.
- 5730, on 07/14/2008, -0/+2"When our bodies notice we need more calories, levels of a hormone called ghrelin increase. Ghrelin is known to spur hunger, but new research suggests this may be a side effect of its primary job as a stress-buster."
In other news: Latest research shows an unprecedented number of Americans are stressed. - KublaKhan, on 07/14/2008, -0/+1Its true. Here's my vote of experience.
- thePhallex, on 07/14/2008, -1/+2i get completely stressed when I don't eat, and most of the time i want to strangle everyone that gets in my way of eating.
this is bs.
the only "good" part about being hungry is when you're not anymore. - inactive, on 07/14/2008, -0/+1I already knew this. Ever heard of a thing called a happy meal? Is at McDonalds and it's good.
- jokeyxero, on 07/14/2008, -1/+2The article needs to rephrase itself, it means that "starvation" can cause "happiness" rather, "motivation".
- Testies, on 07/14/2008, -0/+1I'm happy when I'm hungry because that's a good reason to go to McDonald's
- inactive, on 07/15/2008, -0/+1 There's virtue in being hungry or horny.
- smartboydesigns, on 07/14/2008, -1/+2This is interesting.
- ComeOutSwingin, on 07/14/2008, -0/+1I know when going out to dinner with family that they get real excited about over what to cook or where we might go.
- daybreak, on 07/15/2008, -0/+1I call complete *****. They're equating a survival mechanism with happiness and it makes absolutely no sense. They almost seem to imply that the animals with low ghrelin were depressed. Food and basically anything else we put into our body is technically a drug complete with side-effects and mood alterations. Like any drug, it can be addictive. The simplistic notion that 'not eating' can be addictive is fairly ridiculous...Anorexia is a far more complicated disease than these people care to discuss.
- florin, on 07/14/2008, -0/+1Quote:
"Mice who had limited ghrelin activity seemed depressed. If pushed into deep water they made no effort to swim. When introduced to a maze, they clung to the entryway. And when placed with other mice, they tended to keep to themselves. (These behaviors were reversed when the mice were given a low-dose antidepressant commonly prescribed to humans.)
In contrast, mice with high levels of ghrelin swam energetically in deep water, looking for escape. They eagerly explored new environments. And they were much more social."
So that's the meaning of the expression "stay hungry". :-) - kaamran, on 07/15/2008, -0/+1I agree; The title should be like Appetite makes you happy rather than Hunger....
- gavinhudson, on 07/15/2008, -0/+1Obesity can make you sad.
- Encablossa, on 07/15/2008, -0/+1Hunger makes you happy? If so, I guess those starving people in Africa must be completely ecstatic.
- KingGorilla, on 07/15/2008, -0/+1LAY OFF I'M STARVING
- remo2012, on 07/15/2008, -0/+1One word, Potato Pizza!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a9iKIU02Ft0 - KingGorilla, on 07/15/2008, -0/+1You wouldn't like me when I'm hungry...
- spanner, on 07/15/2008, -0/+1This is wonderful news!
Now I don't have to give money to any food aid charities in Africa, those starving Dafur people are really happy!
Lets cut back the food supply in Zimbabwe as well to make it the happiest country on earth. -
