- FishHammer, on 03/01/2009, -9/+261In cell biology, the nucleus (pl. nuclei; from Latin nucleus or nuculeus, or kernel) is a membrane-enclosed organelle found in all eukaryotic cells. JESUS IS YOUR SAVIOUR It contains most of the cell's genetic material, organized as multiple long linear DNA molecules in complex MASTURBATING IS BAD with a large variety of proteins, such as histones, to form chromosomes. GAYS ARE EVILThe genes within these chromosomes are the cell's nuclear genome. The function of the nucleus is to maintain the integrity of these genes and to control the activities of the cell by regulating gene expression.

- fandyllic, on 03/01/2009, -9/+65Very informative. The article could have focused less on evolution, though. My favorite counter argument is the Pastafarian creation myth. Priceless.

- inactive, on 03/01/2009, -3/+52". . . imagine a puddle waking up one morning and thinking, 'This is an interesting world I find myself in, an interesting hole I find myself in, fits me rather neatly, doesn't it? In fact it fits me staggeringly well, must have been made to have me in it!' This is such a powerful idea that as the sun rises in the sky and the air heats up and as, gradually, the puddle gets smaller and smaller, it's still frantically hanging on to the notion that everything's going to be alright, because this world was meant to have him in it, was built to have him in it; so the moment he disappears catches him rather by surprise. I think this may be something we need to be on the watch out for."

Until proponents of intelligent design can explain why believing in an all powerful being who just is, who is far more complicated and intelligent than us makes more sense than us evolving over billions of years (of the universe), then I have no time for any of them.
24000 people die EVERY DAY from hunger or hunger-related causes! 75% of them are children!! Last year, 9.2m children aged under five died of malnutrition and AIDS across the world. 800 million people do not have enough food to eat at this very moment even in this modern age!! (Remember America is only 280 million people, so you do the math) 5700 Africans die each day of Aids!!
Yeah, some "Intelligent Designer"!
If you accept for a second that we had to have been aided in order to make us what we are then you can't just answer that with a being who is even less likely to exist due to an increased level of intelligence and beauty with no clue as to its origin. The answer intelligent design gives to the question of existence is essentially the same question but even more complicated and unlikely. - inactive, on 03/01/2009, -5/+51BOO-FVCKIN'-HOO!
Wow you Christians are so persecuted aren't you?!
You're just the weak little kids cowering at the feet of the big bad Atheists from the way you talk.
I don't know if you just got back from your space trip, But you know what? Christians have taxless insane asylums on just about every corner of America preaching death and destruction to millions of people on as many corners as possible re-affirming their superstitious beliefs of disturbing stories of hell and damnation and devils and eternal suffering and ramming them down the throats of unsuspecting children.
Its is because of Christians that the GOP have had the majority of the political power in this country for the last 8 fvcking years so I think, wait...yes that's correct, you are todays grand prize winners of a lifetime supply of "Shut The ***** Up!" It goes great with pork and and hot air!
Honestly, I don't give a damn what brand of ***** anyone believes until those beliefs begin to turn into laws and campaign platforms, you've overstepped the boundry separating church from state.
Thats what happening in this country. Don't expect politeness, Nutbars.
It is a chilling fact that most of the world's leaders believe in nonsensical fairytales about the nature of reality. They believe in Gods that do not exist, and religions that could not possibly be true. We are driven to war after war, violence on top of violence to appease madmen who believe in gory mythologies. These men are called Christians, Muslims and Jews. - SQLserver, on 03/01/2009, -4/+44And this is why you people are regarded as dangerously insane. You seriously have no understanding how science works, what the Big Bang Theory is, and even basic common sense.
A. The Big Bang theory does not deal with how "energy came into existence". Instead, it simply states that empirical evidence suggests that the entire universe expanded from an extremely dense singularity about 13.7 billion years ago. All energy in the universe was compressed into this singularity, and thus no energy was created.
B. Of course it could be that an Intelligent Designer is behind the world. Scientifically and rationally we must accept that every possible answer could be right. However, because there is ample scientific evidence against an Intelligent Designer, no scientific evidence for one, and no natural mechanism proposed as a hypothesis for how an Intelligent Design would function, it is far more unlikely than the theory of Evolution by natural selection.
B. No rationally thinking person "believes" in anything. I don't believe in Evolution. No scientist believes in Evolution. Evolution is simply accepted as the best scientific theory we currently have to explain the origins of species and life as we see it.
C. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gravity
D. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Time
E. This is how science works. Asking questions and creating hypotheses by using the scientific method is the ONLY rational way to think about our world.
F. There is no scientific evidence or reasoning that suggests any mechanism in the Theory of Evolution would have been "improbable".
Instead of thinking scientifically and rationally, you have resorted to irrationally believing in something there is no science behind and no scientific evidence to explain. Then, you purposefully ask questions filled with inaccurate claims.
Do you wonder why you people aren't taken seriously?
As a final note, the scariest part of your mentality is that you seriously think you are outsmarting millions of scientists on the globe. You've shown us you don't even understand how Science works, let alone understand theories such as the Big Bang, and yet you think you are outsmarting people who have dedicated decades of their lives to working on and understanding these theories. That's just sad. - SQLserver, on 03/01/2009, -3/+42There are some classrooms across the United states in high schools where it is literally impossible to teach Biology seriously, as students will disrupt the class in protest. There have been several personal accounts of teachers of this, and scientific studies to back it up. Less than half of all US states in a study were given a "passing grade" on how well their schools taught basic Evolution.

- Khast, on 03/01/2009, -4/+41Religious, political, racial, ethical...all groups have an ulterior motive...who has the biggest say is who can convince the most people what is right and wrong.
All differences asside, we are all just fleshy bags of water inhabiting a rock floating in space. - inactive, on 03/01/2009, -0/+34Science doesn't suppose an answer when there is insufficient evidence to support it. However religion does, regardless of if it lines up with reality or not.
If you would like to be told an answer, regardless of the evidence, go for religion. If you would rather an examination of the facts, go for science. - inactive, on 03/01/2009, -12/+46How can you tell a religious leader is lying? His lips are moving.

- SQLserver, on 03/01/2009, -4/+30Yikes, the crazies are out in force today.... A few months ago you'd only see 1 or 2 religious wingnut comments in a thread like this, now you see more like 3-4....
- SQLserver, on 03/01/2009, -4/+30Science and Spirituality can never "merge", by definition.
Science is a process in which one analyzes the world by collecting scientific data and observations, and forming theories based on the data.
Spirituality is a process in which one has an irrational belief in something without strong scientific evidence.
Thus, the two can never merge. - byronm, on 03/01/2009, -2/+27what place does religion have in science? where did the article even mention witches? what does your post have to do with anything?

Why are snowflakes so unique and geometric? Did God make them that way, in the hopes one day we would develop the microscope and be able to observe the beauty of the thing?
Or are snowflakes just the result of the behavior of crystallizing water molecules?
Science is based on what's observed, that's why your scoffing at "It just is" is so hilariously ignorant. - beatle42, on 03/01/2009, -1/+23@ccoburn3
It is science to dismiss a hypothesis that is not testable and makes no testable predictions. - inactive, on 03/01/2009, -0/+22"Our friend has expounded a hypothesis -- God set off the Big Bang. You offer no evidence that God did not do so."
And neither did he. "Extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence." The burden of proof is on him, not me. - alleged, on 03/01/2009, -1/+23May you never have surgery performed by a doctor trained at a medical school that teaches intelligent design.
- dawkin5, on 03/01/2009, -0/+22You'll be laughing ON the other side of your face after the Rhapsody - The Teapot does not LOOK kindly on heretics.
- inactive, on 03/01/2009, -1/+23You are a frighteningly dogmatic young man. Go out and experience the world and learn a little before you make such blindly authoritative statements.
- eir574, on 03/01/2009, -0/+22"What I'm asking is how did energy ultimately come into existance at all?"
And if no one can come up with a scientific answer, why does that automatically mean that a deity (and your deity in particular) must have done it? Why not just make peace with the idea that not all questions will have answers in your lifetime? There are things we know now that were unknown not too long ago. Were the people who answered those questions with 'god did it' wrong? - crocodilexp, on 03/01/2009, -0/+22Myth? Please show some respect, pastafarianism is a theory just like the rest of them :)
- inactive, on 03/01/2009, -2/+23What is your answer sean? That God did it?
Science can't answer those questions - yet. - Dazer, on 03/01/2009, -4/+25"How about "How to spot a hidden anti-religious agenda"?"
The answer to that is simple. The way to spot a hidden anti-religious agenda is to look for any type of rational argument. As soon as we start using logic and rational thinking, we are being anti-religious. - eir574, on 03/01/2009, -0/+21"Yes, that would be my answer. In my opinion, science will never answer those questions."
You require an answer, so you're satisfied just making one up? I've made peace with the idea that I'm not going to be able to answer every question in my lifetime. I don't feel that filling in the gaps with 'god did it' is of any help at all. Only answers that are actually correct are satisfying. Those that are made up so that you don't have to live with quite as much uncertainty are not answers at all.
Tell me, what do you do when a question whose only 'answer' before was 'god did it' is finally answered by science? Does that mean you were wrong before? If so, how do you know you're not wrong now? - Epitaph, on 03/01/2009, -2/+23same here, but I think we might be the lucky ones
- nitsuj, on 03/01/2009, -1/+22"Creationists have intelligent design. Scientists have evidence."
There, fixed it for you. - SarcasticGenius, on 03/01/2009, -1/+21Who are you fooling? You post in EVERY religious and science thread blasting away with both barrels. You seeking this type of article out. Look at your history, that is the proof.
- BoxAdorable, on 03/01/2009, -1/+21The witch hunts were more typically saved for all us heretics.
- inactive, on 03/01/2009, -0/+20We may not have the answers to all of life's mysteries, but we have pointed out your many logical fallacies and your complete lack of scientific rigor. It's not so much about us being 100% correct, as it is you being 100% wrong. Now if you don't have anything to say that makes sense, kindly stfu
- fathermarlow, on 03/01/2009, -2/+21Since there has been no empirical evidence of a "spirit", there is no observational basis for spirituality; and since science does not comment on the supernatural, there will never be a blending of spirituality and science.
- inactive, on 03/01/2009, -2/+21"Don't ***** patronize me."
***** excuse me? Maybe you ought to show a little respect before it's given in return, yes?
"The teaching of evolution and abiogenesis in school strips the opportunity of the students to think of the 'why'. You've only got them thinking of the how, when, what."
It's a matter of evidence. That's why there are theories and hypotheses in science - they look at the how, when and the what and try to figure out the Why. If you have any evidence that could contradict evolution, then put it in my hand. Otherwise it is all just dogma. - Dazer, on 03/01/2009, -0/+19The structure may be the same, but if the doctor is willing to believe something based on no evidence, I would be a little bit worried about what medical procedures he/she might attempt to use. I like my doctors to care about rigorous science.
- Qbryzan, on 03/01/2009, -0/+19Hey, if that's the way you want to look at it that's your choice, but I see it as both of us coming around to Darwin's way of thinking. There are other possibilities besides "random" and "supernaturally guided".
