- conan359, on 10/12/2007, -7/+84Not everybody reads every news site on the Internet.
- dan2, on 10/12/2007, -10/+40My biggest pet peeve is someone who's biggest pet peeve is people saying "um" and "ah".
- CorpT, on 10/12/2007, -4/+30I'll save you the trouble of going to the site with a recap:
Record yourself. Notice how many times you do it. Stop doing it.
Very informative. Sure glad this made it here. I don't know what I would ahve done without it. - saifatlast, on 10/12/2007, -1/+26God, I guess the way to get stories on the front page of Digg is to find interesting stories and then submit them. What a stupid idea.
[/sarcasm] - ferrari_f50, on 10/12/2007, -1/+24Don't forget "like". People use that all too often.
- KyleRayner, on 10/12/2007, -22/+41Ah, now I see the secret to submitting stories. Just copy and paste them from reddit and/or del.ic.ous to digg, and watch your user rating climb.
- Roulette, on 10/12/2007, -10/+27Now... would somebody show Bush this article?
- CorpT, on 10/12/2007, -7/+22What to do when you don't like a comment:
1) Don't comment
2) Don't rate up
3) Move on to another comment
everybody is happier that way - metalmallow, on 10/12/2007, -1/+15"Like" is the modern comma.
- chubbyduck, on 10/12/2007, -1/+15I had two tricks as a debater and since everything was extemporaneous I couldn't pre-read and record my speech. The first was just to pause instead of umming. The pause is never as long to the audience as it feels to you. The second trick was to practice giving speeches with a friend who would loudly repeat your vocalized time fillers as you gave a speech. Every umm gets yelled back at you and you soon learn to be mindful of them.
- Fenster, on 10/12/2007, -2/+10Couldn't agree more....Not really a How To at all.....I read it a couple of times cause I thought I really missed something.
- speedyrev, on 10/12/2007, -2/+10Better technique,
1. Prepare
2. Don't be afraid of a silent pause.
3. Think before you speak. - KnightMareInc, on 10/12/2007, -2/+10you can always use an electric dog collar
- HoboMaster, on 10/12/2007, -3/+11"Every time one uses it unnecessarily, an IQ point is lost."
I think you're mixing cause and effect. - zeldafan, on 10/12/2007, -4/+12http://www.duggmirror.com/general_sciences/How_to_Stop_saying_Um_and_Ah_during_a_speech/
- armbar, on 10/12/2007, -1/+94) Block user
- eleazarfunk, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7Maybe this only applies to me, but I had a teacher in high school tell me that if I say "acorn acorn" in my head every time I started to think while speaking that I would stop saying "uhhh, ummmm..ahh". It seems to work for me for some strange reason. Me thinks it's because my mind went from using "ummm" as a thinking action to what appears to listeners to be a silent pause for a second. All the while, the listener has no idea that I have, for a brief moment, turned into a hungry squirrel.
- Urusai, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7A better idea: get yourself a pipe. That way, you can appear to be chewing thoughtfully on it, making you appear like some old professor or perhaps Hugh Hefner. No need for tobacco, just a pipe. Ruffling up your hair a la Einstein and stroking your chin probably helps to add to the borrowed air of gravitas.
- saifatlast, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5I can't stand it when people put ellipses in place of commas in their sentences. Worse than that though, is people Who just Decide to capitalize whatever Words They Want, or not capitalize at all. I find that really looks stupid and hard to read.

What to do when you don't like a story:
1) Don't comment
2) Don't Digg
3) Move on to another story
everybody is happier that way - dualscreenman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4The senior senator form Massachusets could use this...
- BigBaRay, on 10/12/2007, -10/+14Um... Why is this here?
- wallclimber, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Ums and ahs are a little annoying, but they generally indicate that a person might just be a little nervous and trying to find the right words. But my own pet peeve is when people say "you know" in almost every sentence. Ya know? : )
By the way, for the person that commented on people who use elipses instead of commas...I like elipses, hate commas...
Well, anyway, uh...um...ah...that's like, you know...all I got to say on the, you know, er...um... subject. (Gave it a Digg though ; ) - Zippo, on 10/12/2007, -3/+6I prefer "anoo" or "eeto"... but that's probably my Japanese teacher's fault XD
- aaryn, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I know I'm only adding to the situation by commenting but its people with your attitude that ruin forums and comments sections online by filling it with bitching instead of discussion on the story, which is why we can dig you down in the first place. I can say this a million times but until everyone collectively starts posting meaningful comments instead of complaints about the story there will always be the annoyance of sorting out useless comments.
- squelart, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3My biggest pet peeve is with people who can't distinguish who's and whose. Or it's and its. etc.
:-) - hoborg, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2You forgot poland.
- lazlonger, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Not everyone gives cares about their user rating. Fine if you do, but bitchin and moanin doesn't help your user rating, and it does ***** on my digg experience.
- mikejohnston, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3@cody50: You should credit Robin Williams for that one.
- joelmole, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4I'm a "basically" offender. I know it sounds condescending, so I try not to use it.
- umdigger, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Yeah I took a speech class in high school and I think it was a great thing to have taken. As an engineer in college I would listen to other students give presentations all the time and many of them were horrible.
- cody50, on 10/12/2007, -4/+6Actually show cheney. because notice, bush never talks when cheney is drinking water.
- mrhaines, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Man, this will actually take work to fix...I thought it would be an effortless brain hack...Oh well.
- hypnotizd, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Watching Will Wright demo Spore in that hour long video was painfull with the Um's and Uh's. Great game though!
- Soniti, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I had a teacher in the 8th grade that would ALWAYS use "basically". I called him on it once, when he was explaining something, I followed up with "of course, this is all basically speaking, right?"
He got so pissed, and everyone laughed at his grammatical stupidity.
~Soniti - missflibbles, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1My personal favorite during discussions of short stories in Rhetoric and Comp was, "I think/ I feel..." Had a person who used those phrases constantly, and I once counted 7 instances in one minute.
I know that's what you think! It's coming out of your mouth! Pick something to say and stand by it! - BSpolice, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1One of my high school English teachers was almost terminally afflicted with "ums". One day I decided to count them. I forget the exact total, but it was over 300.
- aaryn, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Don't get me wrong CorpT I'm not saying to not express yourself, it's just that it would be cool if everyone just posted if they were interested in the story and wanted to discuss it, not debate whether or not it should have been posted, my logic is if it's not interesting or not worthy of posting in your opinion just leave it alone. But I guess it's wishful thinking and things continue the way they are, this series of comments is an example of a thread that didn't need to happen itself! It's all good though, I think the moderation system will slowly start getting people to do it anyways.
- Drahknon, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I used to tutor undergrad students on speeches. The biggest thing is to practice. Verbal clutter is largely the result of nervousness from lack of preparation. If you know what you have to say, flawlessly, you will be more likely to just say it.
- cody50, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1@mikejohnston
true. All bow down to the genious that is Robin Williams - lazlonger, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I checked out the rest of these essays and I like the way this guy thinks.
- CorpT, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I also added a succinct recap of the entire article for people unable to go to the page. Am I not allowed to comment on it as well? Or is only positive feedback allowed?
- o0joshua0o, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I agree that habit is annoying. During a presentation, the best thing to do is just be silent while you're thinking, instead of saying anything at all. Or if someone has just asked you a question, buy time by restating the question. Or just say "It's too much to get into here. Let's talk about that off-line."
- OSXpert, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1i would hate class if i didn't get to count my teachers "um"s to pass the time.
- SilentSpyder, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1I noticed this with Governor Corzine during a flood speech a few weeks ago. It was horrendous.
- aeiou, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Good advice. Its always good to prepare well, of course, as speedyrev brought out, but listening to yourself give a speech is a very effective way of finding where you make mistakes.
- Soniti, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2Nerd? No. Educated? Yes.
I prefer ano and etoo aswell.
JP ftw.
~Soniti - jtraverse, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I think a capable talker can be effective without "umms, ahhs, etc.", but..
...you are so right!
That show freaks me out, mostly because of the way they talk. Glad I'm not the only one. - RMoore08, on 10/12/2007, -4/+4how to stop saying um and ah: Tell your brother to hit you in the balls with a baseball bat every time he hears you say "um" or "ah". I guarantee that you will stop saying it after a few hits.
- siaradcymraeg, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Have some sympathy for those that aren't necessarily born with perfect confidence and speech. Just reading a website may not be enough and at least those that do 'um', 'ah', stutter, say 'I think', 'I feel' etc are actually speaking and giving it a go.
The tips and suggestions are great, so thanks to those people! To those who can only criticise those less perfect than themselves..... Get a life!! -
