- nreynolds, on 10/12/2007, -1/+38wow, i was always wondering "how mentos bring about diet coke." Now if only someone could tell me how mentos AFFECT diet coke.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+20Wow... you mean stuff can only be sticky if it has sugar in it?
- thecatisdead, on 10/12/2007, -4/+20A-ffects Diet Coke. Affects. "Effect" is a noun. "Effects" is a plural noun. rrrgh.
Sorry, can't help myself.
edit: beaten to it, I see ;-D - butlershouse, on 10/12/2007, -1/+12Yes, theres a name for someone with to much time on their hands. We call them scientists.
Its a good article and if it stimulates at least one child or parent to consider experimenting with coke and mentos out of interest for the effect created by the process then its a good thing. - ascalonx, on 10/12/2007, -3/+6Actually the geyser is NOT sticky because diet coke has no sugar.
- boycy, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Effect can also be a verb meaning 'to bring about'. I was going to put an example but can't think of one.
- p9s50W5k4GUD2c6, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4And to think I was just about ready to wash a few Mentos down with a swallow of Jolt-Cola! ;)
- edzieba, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I wonder if you could powder the Mentos, keep them in a porous cylindrical chamber, and run the coke through it and out a nozzle. A completely edible hybrid rocket motor!
I'll have to try this with Softmints (in the UK, mentos are hard to find. Softmints look pretty much identical, so they probably have the same effect). - ascalonx, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Gosh darn double post. Anyway, wnyone who has watched day time or late night tv in the last two weeks would know that.
- Physnik, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Excellent article. Anything that can help get people thinking about how things work (aka science) in their everyday lives is OK by me. It's the little mini-experiments like these that people remember from their high school chemistry classes, hopefully sparking a desire to experiment and explore.
- ReqX, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I buried for affect/effect. Come on!
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0at the end of the day.. lots of ppl and their families are having fun making fun videos, using very harmless products..
- slicedoranges, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Really old, but digg because it's cool.

Here, check out some videos about it. - D4r7h3v1l, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2That would be SO COOL if Mentos could effect Diet Coke! That would be a small candy that would create diet coke.
Affect: to cause a change in something (My grades affected my well-being.)
Effect: to cause something (The treaty effected peace.) - trghpy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+02 liter of MT dew - 99 cents

priceless - k4st, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1It amazes me that people don't know the difference between 'effect' and 'affect'.
- Takteek, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2Affect not effect
- Kennethrood, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Yeah, NPR did a story about this effect several months ago.
- Murdats, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1the questionis what? what I say, why will you not tell me the question?
- lament, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1umm...
http://digg.com/search?search=mentos - banter, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0I get the feeling this mentos thing is part of an advertising campaign. I was talking about this the other day w/ my co-workers. They had mentioned they saw this demonstrated on some TV show, and I mentioned it was on The Colbert Report. However, it's still pretty neat . . . but old news.
- Smarterdanu, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2SO OLD NOW
sry for caps...but seriously.... - suede, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Don't worry, there ees no sugar!!!
- cjc343, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0This is fairly old by now... my personal favorite is http://eepybird.com/
- StephenChow, on 10/12/2007, -5/+1I know! I hate those damn videos.
- Bezza, on 10/12/2007, -4/+0Very old and something ANY first year chemistry student can tell you
- thewhitefedora, on 10/12/2007, -8/+3This guy has too much time on his hands. No digg
- brunner, on 10/12/2007, -10/+4This is the single dumbest story I've ever seen on digg.
