- t0dd, on 10/12/2007, -0/+25I will grow a new liver in 2021
- ScionX, on 10/12/2007, -1/+21Kinda ruins the entire reason to get drunk now dont it?
- omirix, on 10/12/2007, -2/+15Well, not if you're driving drunk.
"One moment, officer, let me just get some of my breath mints and government-grade pharmeceuticals." - ched, on 10/12/2007, -2/+14This just in, researchers develop method of having sex without pleasure!
- invisiblegirl, on 10/12/2007, -2/+13"Ro15-4513"...Really rolls of the tongue.
- Thurloat, on 10/12/2007, -1/+12People should just call it ROIS-ASIE instead of Ro15-4513
- SuperSloth, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10Yeah. It might prevent the inebriation and neurologic effects from alcohol, but it doesn't prevent the stomach, liver, and kidney damage.
- akersmc, on 10/12/2007, -2/+10In Star Trek there was a synthetic version of alcohol that got you somewhat intoxicated, but you could quickly shake off the effects without a hangover if you had to. I don't thing you could get totally hammered off the stuff, so true aficionados like scotty, hated it and drank real alcohol instead :)
- timophy, on 10/12/2007, -2/+10...or pay off your hospital bills.
- SouthernDigger, on 10/12/2007, -6/+13Whatthehol are you guys talking about?
- bubbagump, on 10/12/2007, -3/+8Could this be used by Alcoholics to possibly reduce the desire to drink by removing the outcome? Other than that, I'm not sure what good it would do. I still don't want some guy driving just because he had 6 martini's and popped a pill.
Sex without pleasure -- Doesn't that come in the form of a metalic, circular shaped object worn on the left hand? - duke, on 10/12/2007, -3/+8Synthehol?
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -4/+9Arsehol.
- jer2eydevil88, on 10/12/2007, -5/+10I would love this... drinking competitions and betting... I could pay tution for a year off one quarter of betting :-)
- souletr, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5This is a bad idea. You'd never know if you had too much. It would be much easier to get poisoned, go blind, or die. The symptoms of being drunk are usually a good indicator if you've gone overboard and with this you'd lose that clue. Well, I suppose it depends when you take it.
- Ifligus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5"... this drug stops the drunken behavioral symptoms of alcohol such as impaired motor coordination, memory loss and drowsiness."
So in other words, it takes the fun out of being drunk. - tallgreen, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4For many people it is not a release, but a really really strong habit, known as addiction. Sometimes people die from alcohol withdrawal because they don't have enough control to do it gradually. I can imagine this drug could change the way alcoholics view alcohol. If you can eliminate the head buzz and keep the other properties (blood thinning, etc.) it could make a huge difference for people committed to quiting. Most of the time addicts are just addicted to what there are used to and they just need to break the cycle without going cold turkey.
- rebrad, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4There are always ***** that would ruin a wet dream. Why would I want something that negates the desired effects of a substance? People don't drink alcohol for any other reason than to achieve some release from the grind these very same ***** put them through.
- bangelo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4How pissed would your buddy be if lets say he was going home with a "brown bag special" and you slipped on of these in his drink. Coming to he senses in the middle of the act with a heifer. That would be classic.
- Marfanity, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Sweet! Now I can go back to drinking before work!
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4freaking fantastic. drunken stupor remover! call billy mays, have him do the before and after scenes.
- Prophet, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Woohoo, now I can be fully aware of what's traveling the wrong way through my esophagus. Good times.
- Author, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I think this would work great along with Disulfiram (Antabuse) with treating alcoholism. If this works then ERs will be less busy with drunks (we get about 1-9 per night where I work) because like with narcotics they are given Narcan. Now this product will work for drunks too, about time!
- foobario, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I think we could, but it might not work, or it might have unforeseen side-effects, and then we might be worse off than we are now, and what happens if people start using the drug and they build up a tolerance, then we're right back in the same problem, or even worse it might be like bacteria, where antibiotics turn out to just be a way to breed superbugs, so you're worse off than where you started, and if that happened to a language meme, we'd be, like, totally hosed, so maybe we should just leave well-enough alone.
- toxicredm, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3@anonymoustroll: Don't worry, *I* noticed that you had "sin" in quotes denoting that other people might call these acts sins, but that you yourself weren't. As for the name of the drugs, I don't like the name "Sin Drugs" I would call them "Sin-Aidâ„¢" (Not to be confused with Sine-Aid) But too late, I just trade marked that.
- kazsymonds, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Yeah id love to go out, get completely smashed and be able to drive home safely, i think this is a good idea.
- technonoob, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2GIRLS GONE WILD!!!!!!!!!!! then suddenly sober and offended
- cphoover, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2very true. This does sound dangerous, people will gain a false sense of safety with this drug, and forget about organ damage, as well as other dire symptoms of alcohol.
- YossarianDent, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2A long sentence is not necessarily a run-on sentence. The one in question may be long, awkward, and missing a comma, but it's not a run-on. A run-on is two or more independent clauses shoved together with no sort of conjunction or punctuation, a problem from which that sentence doesn't suffer, despite the problems it does have.
- ChiKoo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2The roads could possibly be a safer place because of this very drug, if it does what it promises. Now the only thing people need to worry about is drinking too much alcohol that they poison themselves to death. At least the drowsiness effects are gone!
- emer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2If you read the article you would see that this is a step towards creating a "sober up pill." eg. Go out and have a good night, pop the pill in at the end of the night and drive home safely.
- Jeebugorn, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4there's been an alternate way to counter-act the "drunken symptoms of alcohol" for centuries......don't drink it.
- Author, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Or AT work!
- SouthernDigger, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4Wow... there is another level of geek out there.
- sandwichpants, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Because there are a lot of delicious beers out there, for those who are so inclined to drink them for the taste. Some, like me, consider the effects of alcohol an inconvinience.
But, so far, for me, just drinking in sensible amounts has worked out pretty well. But that doesn't seem to match the intent of most of the drinking public, so maybe pills like this, if they are really safe and effective, could be useful. - CnorthMSU, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Or like control of seizures (one whole class of antiseizure drugs works by enhancing the action of GABAa receptors), which would be a good thing. There is always a good and bad side to any pharmaceutical intervention.
- TylerDurden0, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2It's spelled: g-r-a-p-e-f-r-u-i-t
- zezak, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1@jewsdidwtc: You're a prejudiced moron. Don't post here ever again.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1you'd still pass out, throw up, and get hung over, alcohol poisoning/brain damage (if it was that much you drank), just minus the drunkeness.
- Dolemack, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Why would anyone drink beer to not get drunk?
- Xoligy, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3They may aswell just stop selling alcohol then.
The best thing is, this won't stop the hang-over! So you get the hang-over, without being pissed. How stupid is that?!? - Zero123, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Yo, I don't know about the specifics, but farkin around with the Gaba and Glutamate nuerotransmitters is a bad idea. Most drugs that work on thr brain operate on the secondary neurotransmitters, like serotonin, dopamine..whatevers. The Gaba, Glutimate system is highly sensitive and alterations to it really mess up the body....like with death....
- cius, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1wait, I thought it was supposed to stop the hangover?!
- thatcoolrushguy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Haven't you ever seen those Chaser commercials?
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2@Cius:
You really have no clue do you? Did you know that the US government has a huge tax on alcohol and tobacco sales? Do you know what they call this tax? A "Sin Tax". Hence the previous poster's usage of Sin in quotes. I doubt it has much to do with his personal opinion of alcohol consumption. - thenativeraver, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Is this the end of expensive DUI's?
- cwcheang, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Sell them outside bars and pubs...
Own Bill Gates - burke, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1You could call it "row fifteen" I guess...
- TheSolomon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1tallgreen- Except this substance is only binding to *neurons* (and therefore only affecting the brain), so all other negative effects from alcohol are still in tact. Only twice have I drank to the point of vomiting, all other times when I was heavily drinking, the overwhelming sensation is what convinced me I'd had enough for the night. If you remove that sensation, you eliminate the standard cue for many alcohol abusers that they've reached their limit. You can drink until you become physically ill or pass out due to the alcohol concentration in your blood. Seems like a recipe for liver damage and alcohol poisoning, not therapy or control.
