- dextrocardia, on 10/27/2008, -13/+416It's not even a question anymore of her "not being ready" or "not being experienced." While both of those things are true about her, both imply that she could at some point overcome those problems. No, it's now clear that she is just not capable of the job, and never will be.
If you truly love "Country First" you will flee from this ticket as fast as you can. - tyshro, on 10/27/2008, -9/+355McCain also kept hacking away at "the $3 million overhead projector in Chicago." Which of course was for Adler Planetarium, which fascinates millions of visitors every year. It inspires future scientists. Ah well; who needs them anyway?
- bluepill2, on 10/27/2008, -13/+354The Wackaloon of Wasilla gives us another gem, thank you Hitchens for the deconstruction.
- pablo0713, on 10/27/2008, -8/+234F#cking brilliant. Hitchens is always on the mark. Say what you want about his pro-war stance, this man knows how to set the record straight.
- SolarCat, on 10/27/2008, -13/+220Yes, and having demanded that "God's perfect will be done on Nov 4," are all these wingnuts going to become Democrats on Nov 5?
- jasoninoakland, on 10/27/2008, -7/+205Penny-wise and pound-foolish.
Let's cut $1 million in upstream science funding, so we can launch a $1 trillion war.
In addition to failing science, Palin and her supporters seem to have failed math. - syrynus, on 10/27/2008, -6/+180At a time when kids in India and China are studying science and math with the ferocity of starving wolves, this woman cannot be put one heartbeat from the presidency! George W. Bush has already made us the laughingstock of the world...if we start teaching junk science in our schools, we will slide into the oblivion of being a "has been' country within a generation.
- gnomead, on 10/27/2008, -3/+152Here's an example of Hitchens' integrity. Right from day one Hitchens has been a very vocal supporter of the war on Iraq and I like many people disagreed with his views on this. He also maintained that water-boarding was an acceptable means of interrogation. However, unlike douchebag blowhards on the right like Limbaugh, Bill-O or Hannity, he had the integrity to be subjected to water-boarding himself and changed his views after the experience. It's good to know some journalists are big enough to admit that they're wrong when presented with better evidence.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g7u-Wk1aU-E - SEOAly, on 10/27/2008, -9/+148Unbelievable and unparalleled idiocy. Gee...and I thought Dan Quayle would stand the test of time as the most unqualified and unintelligent Vice Presidential nominee in history. Turns out I missed the mark on that one!
- svensko, on 10/27/2008, -2/+118As a genetics undergrad student, this woman scares the crap out of me. I have many more issues with her than McCain. I'm only voting for Obama to keep her far away from power.
- pwner, on 10/27/2008, -3/+116Hitchens is a pompous prick. I love him.
- reubs82, on 10/27/2008, -3/+105I'm wondering the same thing. If Obama wins will G-d have answered their prayers for His "perfect will", or will G-d have ignored their prayers?
Conundrum. - aduzik, on 10/27/2008, -0/+94Either way they're somehow going to blame it on the gays.
- theutopian, on 10/27/2008, -7/+101It's Idiocracy happening 5000 years early!
- Autodidaddict, on 10/27/2008, -5/+91Instead of VP, Palin should be running for a seat on a school board somewhere in Kansas
- degree, on 10/27/2008, -3/+85you can misrepresent my science. you can shrug off my findings in lieu of personal beliefs...but listen to me now, do NOT ***** WITH MY FRUIT FLIES.
- OliveStreet, on 10/27/2008, -3/+82Why do so many Christians have to be such *****? WTF, is it just something in your DNA? Is there some kind of school you have to attend? Are you all just that stupid and afraid and so in need to feel superior to someone or something?
- benzzene, on 10/27/2008, -1/+78That really bugged me. I watched McCain go on about the 3 million dollar projector in the debates and I was wishing for Obama to say "It was a planetarium projector. It helps to educate people about our amazing Universe. It helps to give them a sense of scale, that is, to be able to tell the difference between 3 million and 700 billion [or whatever the cost of the Iraq war is now]."
- mithrasinvictus, on 10/27/2008, -0/+71Or the difference between 6000 years old and 4.54 billion years old.
- cloudberries, on 10/27/2008, -3/+73Dug down just for using "Obammy" like a *****.
Maybe they're just nervous because Sarah Palin is all for the abolishment of logic and reason and a return to the days when we could happily burn people at the stake for no reason other than they don't believe in a big ***** floating cloud-god-thing. - breadfred, on 10/27/2008, -1/+66But but but.... Scientists kill babies!!!!!!11!1!
- personalsaga, on 10/27/2008, -6/+71Of all the problems facing the GOP, the biggest one is its anti-intellectualism. While there may be an unlimited supply of ignorant voters in America, there is an inevitable movement towards progressive ideas in the country, as well. Even many evangelical Christians (mostly young) are beginning to understand the connection between their faith and the necessity of being good stewards of the earth. As they examine the data on climate change, for example, it becomes increasingly problematic for them to cling to biblical literalism if they wish to be serious about dealing with this (pardon the pun) fundamental issue. And so it will be with scientific and technological advances in every arena, especially green industries and the biological sciences. Not that science and technology haven't contributed greatly to our current challenges, but they are the best hope of getting us through this Age of Transition. More so, it would seem, than fairy tales from far simpler, long gone eras. Incantations against witches and demons won't be very helpful either.
- Nosferotu, on 10/27/2008, -2/+66I love that Sarah Palin is breaking away from the McCain campaign because even she realizes it's doomed, and she's trying to use the momentum of her introduction onto the national stage as a way to catapult herself into a serious career. Unfortunately for her, her introduction onto the stage as essentially the quintessential Republican 'woman', who no one can really take seriously, has meant that she's become a political figure that everyone loves to hate. I can't wait to see her name disappear into the mist, and never have to hear about her, her abuses of power, her stupid ideas, or her annoying accent ever again.
- meruru, on 10/27/2008, -2/+65There needs to be a moratorium on these stupid nicknames. Please no more McFailin, McSame, McBush, Barack Osama, Microsux, Micro$oft, Linsux, etc.
- Gimporama, on 10/27/2008, -1/+60The greatest trick the Republican Party ever pulled was convincing the world that they are the party of righteousness and the Democrats are the party of country-hating-elitist-socialists.
- Nanog, on 10/27/2008, -10/+67Say goodbye to science and reason and welcome the rule of idiocracy and mediocracy, if Mc/Palin are elected. What a fall this would be for the most technologically country in the world...
- kingmanic, on 10/27/2008, -2/+59Palin instead has:
- A history of cronyism
- A distinct LACK of knowledge in almost every subject including the structure of the government
- A record to trumpeting ideology over practicality
- A record for abuse of power
- A real McCarthiest streak of dividing the nation along ideological grounds
This isn't guilt by association as you are presenting. This is sins she has personally committed no her law professor, neighbor, pastor or janitor.
If she loved America why does she want to impede America in capturing rapists (Not funding rape kits). Why does she want America to become dumber (Teaching the invalid argument). If she loved America she'd bow out of the race and decline to be the nominee for VP. She doesn't love America. She loves power and influence. She loves you because you stump for her and shill for her. She hates all the rest of America which does not directly contributing to her power and influence.
If you love America, vote for anyone else beside her. Anyone at all. - chaos7, on 10/27/2008, -15/+71palin is a dumb bitch
- Julolidine, on 10/27/2008, -4/+57Even in the 21st century, Drosophila melanogastor still remains one of the most important genetic model organisms.
I guess she'll be pretty pissed when she finds out how much money is "wasted" on bacteria, yeast, nematodes, and zebrafish.
But I guess in her mind, God made man a "special" creature, and therefore we have nothing at all similar to fruit fly's. - TwiiLight, on 10/27/2008, -4/+56Lol Christians.
- Stavrosian, on 10/27/2008, -0/+51I don't always agree with him (although in this case I think he is about as on the money as it is possible to be) but the man is a supreme wordsmith, and always worth listening to.
- Cadicus, on 10/27/2008, -3/+54As a Chicago resident.. That constant harassment of our planetarium was ridiculous. The "Projector" he was talking about is a state of the art machine. He made it sound like the $5000 hammer.
- ahawks, on 10/27/2008, -1/+51That's the thing about Prayer... when the results come out as desired, its proof of God's existence and benevolence.
When it doesn't work, look the other way, or try (pray) harder next time. - pintomp3, on 10/27/2008, -8/+55we need to stop electing fundamentalist politicians like sarah palin, george bush, mike huckabee, ron paul, and rick santorum before we become a christian version of saudi arabia.
- wunksta, on 10/27/2008, -1/+46lol wut
- ricperry1, on 10/27/2008, -1/+46No, they will believe that we "truly are in the End Of Days." I used to be one of them. My family still thinks that way, and they really frighten me sometimes.
- 47f0, on 10/27/2008, -0/+43102708a - A 38 year-old guy from here (AF) who joined Digg on October 27th, 2008
Nice try asswipe - just another brand spanky new McCain brownie point account. - writie, on 10/27/2008, -0/+43Make that "convincing America". The world is not subject to Rush Limbaugh.
- geodebug, on 10/27/2008, -0/+42The big pro-Palin counter argument I keep hearing is that she is a fast learner and would be able to pick up world-level politics in the first two years or so.
But the problem with that argument is what can a willfully ignorant person learn? I'm sure she'd get the politics down (sharpen her image, learn better ways not to embarrass herself in front of reporters) but she has a long track record of showing that she cannot or will not understand the issues beyond a paper-thin facade.
The last economic bubble was based on bad credit, which won't soon be repeated (I doubt the world will invest cash in the US for awhile). Science is America's only hope of a sustainable new economic rise but the GOP picks leaders who do not support, understand, or trust science. - tomarocco, on 10/27/2008, -0/+42Quayle would be a breath a fresh air right now, wouldn't he?
- seltaeb4, on 10/27/2008, -2/+44I accidentally the most technologically country in the world...
- Autodidaddict, on 10/27/2008, -4/+45LOL - so how many hats and beer cozies do you have enough points racked up for from the McCain Campaign?
Or did they end their "earn stupid ***** for spewing ignorance over the Internet" promotion? - inactive, on 10/27/2008, -5/+45it never ceases to amaze me how dumb this country is what with half its population being republicans and all.
- inactive, on 10/27/2008, -0/+39I wouldn't wish that on Kansas.
- downneck, on 10/27/2008, -0/+38and probably a vicious drunk, i'd vote for him for president in a heartbeat
- cloudberries, on 10/27/2008, -1/+39He lives in a house made entirely of "Nobama" bumper stickers.
- dcmjzero, on 10/27/2008, -0/+37I got to the word Marxist and stopped. You do realize that as governor of Alaska Palin passed a "windfall" tax on oil companies and "redistributed the wealth" to Alaska citizens?
- nickels, on 10/27/2008, -2/+37Yeah, that's why we are afraid of her. It has nothing to do with the fact that she is an uneducated dolt way out of her league, and she can't articulate a thought without someone writing it down for her first.
- ps3udov3ctor, on 10/27/2008, -3/+37Dear Mr. Hitchens,
Thank you so much, sir.
Sincerely,
Non-citizens of the "real" America - CamperBob, on 10/27/2008, -1/+34The fact that Obama didn't nail McCain's ass to the podium when he used that "$3 million overhead projector" schtick in two separate debates cemented my respect for him.
There is no way in hell I'd have been able to resist jumping on McCain for saying something that stupid. I would have patronizingly pointed out what a "planetarium" is, what it's for, why they're relatively expensive, and how I could, of course, understand if someone who believed Jesus rode dinosaurs wasn't too familiar with planetariums. I would then have lost half my audience for coming across like a smarmy elitist *****.
Props to Obama, for knowing how to watch his opponent lose gracefully. I'm not a fan of his politics but I have to admit he's what the country needs at the moment. -
