- delecti, on 09/09/2008, -6/+85I like how the google ads are all religion related.
Is There A God? - Offering Six Straight Forward Reasons To Believe In God
Nice try google, but you missed the point of the article - sockpuppets, on 09/09/2008, -1/+73The higgs boson is the particle that gives diet pepsi its one calorie.
- inactive, on 09/09/2008, -1/+64I had my computer read it. It's like Hawking's in the room with me...
- Absinthminded64, on 09/09/2008, -1/+60$100 ?? Reminds me of Dr. Evil asking for ONE MILLION DOLLARS
- garryw, on 09/09/2008, -1/+48EU bet 6.6 billion otherwise
- Peynis, on 09/09/2008, -0/+44He's using an outdated version of Microsoft Sam, that's why.
- BXRWXR, on 09/09/2008, -2/+42I read all of his quotes from that article out loud to myself in that robot voice. It's a really funny article when you do it like that.
- thcobbs, on 09/09/2008, -0/+40Just about everyone.... He usually takes the "its not true" bet as a way to spur innovation. The last time, he even bet against someone finding the first blackhole. Because, as he put it, if he was right(and invalidate his own theory), he'd at least have the consolation of winning the bet.
THAT is a true scientist and good humorist. - bicyclethief, on 09/09/2008, -2/+41Mr. Hawking knows this because he already built his own particle collider in the wheels of his chair.
- YoctoYotta, on 09/09/2008, -2/+40Where did you hear that? Higgs boson research is one of CERNs primary goals, I'm pretty sure every single person at there would LOVE to find it. Leon Lederman was the dude who dubbed the Higgs boson the "god particle." For something so potentially game changing to science, it's a terrible misnomer. I'm sure the guy was referring to Einstein's (and Hawkings,' appropriately enough) "god," but that word really just needs to be stricken from use, far too many people assume it's deity-related.
Hawkings is making the bet because he believes there is another path towards a unified theory of the major forces. - MacBookForMe, on 09/09/2008, -2/+31Let's make our "Digg betting team" about that subject :)
- Slashered, on 09/09/2008, -1/+29so who is actually going to bet against him?
- inactive, on 09/09/2008, -0/+27Sweet, so the war in Iraq would have payed for more than 100 of these. =/
- cromulent742, on 09/09/2008, -2/+29Absence of evidence != evidence of absence
- trogdor282, on 09/09/2008, -1/+27That's BS, not finding it would not prove it didn't exist.
Granted, God Particle is the worst science name since the Central Dogma of Biology. - FishHammer, on 09/09/2008, -4/+29It'd be somewhat amusing if after millions (billions?) of dollars and years of preparation, the Hadron Collider didn't actually find or do anything.
- IphtashuFitz, on 09/09/2008, -1/+26More like Randolph & Mortimer betting $1 that they could turn Lewis Winthorp into a drug-peddling bum and Randolph Jackson into a successful businessman.
- dafragsta, on 09/09/2008, -0/+25"I bet $100 you won't find the HIggs boson."
"What? WTF? Where were you this whole time before we spent YEARS and BILLIONS of dollars?"
"Boning your mom while pouring sugar in your gas tank." - bicyclethief, on 09/09/2008, -0/+25When asked for comment, Mr. Hawking said: Partly cloudy. Winds out of the west at 10 miles per hour.
- slapded, on 09/09/2008, -3/+27he always looks so sad
- Chicken, on 09/09/2008, -0/+24Nelson Mandela.
- BaudiIROCZ, on 09/09/2008, -3/+27I'll put up $10,000 that the CERN won't suck the earth into a black hole. Any takers?
- HarryRag, on 09/09/2008, -0/+22It would probably be even more awesome if they don't find the Higgs Boson, because that's what scientists are expecting. If it isn't found, it will warrant an enormous "WTF" from scientists forcing them to rethink a lot of things which could lead to even more radical things. Or something.
I'm PUMPED for the results of LHC's experiments. - JesusTeaseUs, on 09/09/2008, -3/+25I bet I could beat him at a game of basketball.....
/one ticket please - plhearn, on 09/09/2008, -0/+22if he read that right now he'd be hitting his "lol" button
- Lucas123, on 09/09/2008, -3/+23And, I'll be a million dollars it won't be the end of the universe when they fire it up. Any takers?
- acephreak, on 09/09/2008, -2/+21What google ads? ABP FTW
- geeshock, on 09/09/2008, -2/+21You are right in that they would love to find it, but also not finding would be just as rewarding, as you say it changes the game by /proving/ it does not exist.
There was an interesting documentary about the LHC from the BBC I watched:
http://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/b00dccnr/ - bm2xv, on 09/09/2008, -0/+19Hawking has done this before: he bet a colleague that the point of his research, black holes, did not exist.
Apparently he was not betting because he believed they did not exist but because, that way, he had something to look forward to either way.
God's particle exists: "Sweet, a groundbreaking discovery!"
God's particle doesn't exist: "Sweet, 100 dollars!" - TriSight, on 09/09/2008, -0/+18You mean like Hawking Radition (Bekenstein-Hawking radiation)?
- kb7735, on 09/09/2008, -0/+17"The LHC cost 6.03 billion Swiss francs (5.46 billion dollars, 3.9 3.76 billion euros) to build." - ouch
- tattertech, on 09/09/2008, -1/+18@geeshock - They can't prove it doesn't exist, they can only further the evidence that it doesn't exist.
- YoctoYotta, on 09/09/2008, -0/+15Yeah, you are right, it's a win-win situation. Someone has to be able to spin that negatively somehow =)
- tk0680, on 09/09/2008, -0/+15I'll bet $2m that you never contribute a tenth of what he has to the world :)
- IphtashuFitz, on 09/09/2008, -1/+16Um. I think you mean "the LHC", not "the CERN".
Either way, I'm not touching that bet with a Higgs Boson or any other particle for that matter. - xeomage, on 09/09/2008, -0/+13Not finding the Higgs Boson is still finding something, though. The LHC is powerful enough that it should detect Higgs if it exists. If it doesn't, it will essentially prove that our model of physics is wrong. I'm excited about that possibility, because it opens the door for some interesting alternative theories to get more scrutiny, including theories that would allow for faster than light travel.
- OstrakonX, on 09/09/2008, -1/+14So Hawking is betting against them observing a Higgs Boson?
He's just being bitter... he wanted them to call it a Hawking Boson. - FredFredrickson, on 09/09/2008, -0/+13I'm betting they won't find a cure for your callousness or stupidity either.
- dha07030, on 09/09/2008, -1/+14 Please tell me more about what you have done, you sound like an interesting person, with the reddit visiting and all.
- Pandatot, on 09/09/2008, -1/+13Clearly you're using Chrome
- aigulf, on 09/09/2008, -0/+11someone doesn't understand currency conversion...
http://www.google.com/search?q=convert+100+dollars ... - TBombadil, on 09/09/2008, -2/+13well someones being a negative Nancy
- sockpuppets, on 09/09/2008, -0/+11Thereby proving that the higgs boson does not exist. That'll be $10 billion dollars, please.
- GeorgeStone2, on 09/09/2008, -0/+10***** great play on words.
- Lucas123, on 09/09/2008, -0/+10that was the point.
- borez, on 09/09/2008, -0/+10Do you actually live on this planet?
- chedabob, on 09/09/2008, -1/+10Pfft, somebody else already bet $1000000
- omnis, on 09/09/2008, -1/+10How does not finding it prove it doesn't exist?
- thatspsychotic, on 09/09/2008, -1/+10He's thinking: Where's the "lorry" button on this thing??
