(Insert XKCD Zeppelin pun here) - KatherineC, on 02/22/2008, -3/+4Beautiful pictures.
- chemdiva, on 02/22/2008, -1/+2It's great to look at those pictures, and then imagine the equipment that was used to take them.
- Existenz87, on 02/23/2008, -0/+1I agree. Those men had huge balls. Blue perhaps, but huge.

Great documentary with film of footage from Shackleton's Expedition - brundlefly76, on 02/22/2008, -0/+1These were great, especially since I am reading a great historical fiction thriller named "The Terror" - about two 19th century English ships frozen in the ice for years while trying to find the Northwest Passage. It just amazes me what these guys had to live through.
- ostracize, on 02/22/2008, -1/+2That's what they all said:

/runs away - dougmc, on 02/22/2008, -1/+2My uncle, Alfred McLaren, went to the North Pole *under* the ice cap (no sails though -- their power was nuclear). and spent quiet a bit of time up there.
He's even been in the news about this lately --

... much to my dad's surprise, who found his brother's picture on the front page of the local paper on tuesday. - Nougat, on 02/22/2008, -1/+1They went in a boat with freakin' sails. That's balls.
- Puisapres, on 02/22/2008, -1/+1Older than the Internet.
- clockdist, on 02/22/2008, -0/+0...and now it's a big swimming pool.
- Flatlineskillz, on 02/22/2008, -2/+2Reminds me of when I was in scouts and some kids complained that they were cold on a camping trip. A leader tried to tell all the parents that every kid needed a Gore Tex rain suit and boots in order to go on a camping trip. We climbed mount Everest and explored the north pole before gore tex im sure some scouts can knuckle up and survive a weekend without it
- eurynome420, on 02/22/2008, -1/+1ahhhh! there's Captain Archibald Witwicky!
- Kenzan, on 02/22/2008, -2/+2-And six hours after these photos were taken, all were eaten by the "Thing."
- Antibland, on 02/22/2008, -2/+1Guy One: "What the hell is the 'North Pole'? Why are we going?"
Guy Two: "Shut up and get the flags." - SuperVepr308, on 02/22/2008, -1/+0I have read alot about Scott and Shackleton's attempts at the South Pole. Truly some amazing and heartbreaking stuff...them boys were tough as hell back then.
- EetFuk, on 02/22/2008, -2/+1First I thought the one wearing the suit was actually a yeti.
- funkymonkey01, on 02/22/2008, -3/+2wow, they are really stunning
- inactive, on 02/22/2008, -4/+2***** the north pole!
(Come on guys, this is wide open for exploitation) - Gudlyf, on 02/22/2008, -5/+3FTA: "Later studies found that Peary was actually 30 to 60 miles (50 to 100 kilometers) short of the Pole."
Epic FAIL.
Just kidding. Those are great pics and it's incredible to think they were able to endure the extreme temps there with inferior protection from the elements as compared to today. - inactive, on 02/22/2008, -3/+1Asia is all a government conspiracy, too!
- rsdigi, on 02/22/2008, -6/+1I'm gonna have to bury these because you left out the photos of them discovering NBE1: AKA Megatron.
- inactive, on 02/22/2008, -9/+4Fake! North Pole expedition was staged just like the moon landing.
- allaboutdatiki, on 02/22/2008, -7/+1wooo yeah, cool stuff (ducking) ... they could only dream of having heated seats ...
