- treepour, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9After Walgreens moved everything containing psuedoephedrine behind the pharmacist's counter I complained -- the pharmacist told me it was due to federal regulation and pretty soon NOTHING would contain psuedoephedrine without a prescription.
Health care is bad enough in this country even for those that are lucky enough to have some crappy HMO plan. Now they're restricting access to something that REALLY WORKS in the name drug hysteria. Welcome to Freedomland(tm), where prohibition = liberation and the great drug czar knows, undoubtedly through divine inspiration, what's best for you and your body.
And, BTW, re the ridiculous claim "DXM=Meth" -- do your research (in places other than D.A.R.E. pamphlets) before your post something so blatantly false.
This may seem like a trivial matter, but it really isn't. This is your freedom being taken away from you by clueless and corrupt corporate executives working in collusion with clueless and corrupt government officials. - databasecowboy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7A more important content to be aware of in these medications is acetaminophen which can easily lead to liver damage if used in excess or in combination with alcohol -- even alcohol consumed days after using acetaminophen.
Acetaminophen poisoning accounts for about half of all liver transplants and can occur even if you follow the directions, especially if you are a small woman, obese, drink alcohol or are not eating properly because you are sick.
This article from the New York Times lays it all out: http://www.nytimes.com/2005/11/29/health/29cons.html?incamp=article_popular_2
Accidental acetaminophen overdoses are a lot more frightening than somebody making meth... but meth hype sells a lot more news and advertising space than a story about the dangers of a popularly advertised over the counter medication. - mancat, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Umm.. I don't get it. Meth makers buy pseudoephedrine in pill form so that they can grind it down to a pure powder base. You can't exactly do that with Vick's, so what's the point in removing the drug from the formula in the first place?
- void, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Jhaven where did you come up with that BS? DXM is a dissociative. Nothing like being tweaked on meth. Get your DXM facts straight:

www.erowid.org
Read that before you say a word about drugs. - cnjmorris, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3"give me a break... how is it their responsibility what the consumers do with their product. stick with what works."
They don't care what people do with their product.. they care about profit. Stores have been forced to keep them in glass cases which means an employee has to get them each time. When I was in florida they had to stop me at the door when the alarm went off.. a person walked up and checked what I had and told me it was because of the sudafed I had. They then checked me off their clipboard and told me to go ahead. Stores were ordering less in favor of other products that were less of a hassle to them and to consumers. Bottom line is if your product has ANY regulations on it you are going to sell less because some people won't bother, will just look for an alternative. - evilunleashed, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Another example of how the whole of society is hindered by catering to the low end of the curve. We are overwhelmed with what I call "Stupidity Laws" that clog the courts and waste federal money. Laws such as helmet laws for motorcyclists. If you refuse to wear a helmet, fine. No one else is responsible for the contents of your head being scattered across the highway resembling chunky salsa. My tax dollars shouldn't go towards the salaries of politicians arguing this point, nor to the police officers that are now forced to spend their time writing citations for these morons. Same goes with seat belts. If you wish to fly through your windshield and become a wet spot of the back of a tractor trailer then go right ahead stupid.
Now people with an illness that we refuse to cure because the money is in the treatment, can't even get proper treatment anymore. Decriminalize all drugs, in fact, put federal money towards it, provide the junkies with more drugs than they can do in a week and watch them all die in a night. Then we can get back to being fleeced by the pharmaceutical industry with our dignity. - gorkish, on 10/14/2007, -0/+3They ought to force them to rename the product.
- treepour, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Irony would have it that I ran out of Sudafed (or rather the generic Wal-phed) today. Lucky me.
Went to the Walgreens down the block. Asked the pharmacist for two boxes of Wal-phed 12-hour.
"Why do you need two?"
"I always get two."
So she had to call the manager.
Manager: "Why do you need two?"
Me: "So I don't have to stand in line as often. This is a hassle. What used to take 5 minutes now takes forever."
Manager: "Ok, I'll let you have two boxes. But just so you know the manufacturer says you shouldn't take it more than 5 days in a row. So I don't see why you need two."
Me: "How often I take it is between me and my doctor."
Manager tosses the boxes on the counter, walks away without saying anything.
I'm suprised they didn't take my ***** fingerprints. - MindTrigger, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3
This is indicative of what our government does now to "protect us". Rather than face the actual problem, they crank down on our civil liberties in some weak ass effort to appear useful.
Coming to a city near you... Martial Law. "If we can't stop meth cookers, we will make everyone stay home".
Oh, and since I used the words 'civil' and 'liberties' in the same sentence, I wanted to take this opportunity to say what a complete JOKE the ACLU is. The only civil liberties they are protecting are the ones that further their own whacked out agenda. - jhaven, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2sell, no. just no. the DM is not Coricidin. Coricidin is a HORRIBLE source for DXM because it contains CPM (Chlorpheniramine Maleate) which is toxic at the levels needed to be ingested for DXM.
DXM is NOT a form of codeine. DXM = disassociative, Codeine = narcotic.
jesus. first people say DXM = meth, and now it is codeine....
don't talk unless you know what yu're talking about.... - brundlefly76, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I hope Nyquil still has the ingredient that knocks you out and gives you lurid night terrors!
- linuxmatt, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Nasal decongestion? Eat a small gob of wasabi. That'll most definitely do the trick ;)
- DewayneSmith, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Good thing my stock of MyQuil/DayQuil is ~4 years old...
- antisthenex, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2DXM and codeine are very different. Codeine is an opiate. It's kind of like morphine.
DXM overdose and addiction are surprisingly powerful.
DXM trips are very...surprising? Don't try to trip, if you're too young or not mentally stable.
If you're going to try to trip, don't take coricidin. That stuff is more dangerous.
This change to NyQuil was pretty unneccessary. - artofluke, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Okto, you're a moron. DXM is a dissociative. Methamphetamine is a stimulant. Seeing dinosaurs float around is different than feeling amped, and the two aren't interchangeable in terms of pleasure for most people.
- ayat108, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3so a blogger says the replacement new version doesnt "work" against his cold symptoms, and you take his word for it? LOL
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2now i have to go to a meth lab just to clear my nose...
anyone here know how to turn meth back into nyquil
i wanna open a reverse methlab - domc, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1As usual, over reactive people get there way. This will not solve the meth problem and the innocent have to have the inconvenience. I recently went to Walgreens to get NyQuil and realized that I had to go to the pharmacy to get it. I also noticed that the pharmacy is not open 24hrs in Walgreen's. So you better get your drugs during regular hours.
Just make the damn illegal drugs legal and tax the suckers just like Pres. Nixon was planning at one time. Geeezzz... - AminoSC, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Vick's Nyquil 6oz for $8.35 equals $ 178.13 per gallon.
- jhaven, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1wait. why am i arguing with someone about drugs on a tech site?
- rc_collins, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1DXM... so yummy.
--dan - lowbot, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Keep supporting the "war on drugs" and the status quo and this is the crazy crap that you get.
- MindTrigger, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1
Better living through Dextromethorphan Hydrobromide. - Sell, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1jhaven you must have read this article http://www.dextromethorphan.ws/dxmguide.htm
- Jaymoon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I'll just stick with good 'ol Vitamin C... =D
- SuperRob, on 10/14/2007, -0/+1The Vicks FAQ on pseudoephedrine claims that the new ingredient " ... phenylephrine [is] a safe and effective nasal decongestant." Safe, maybe, but damned sure ain't effective. It's not even listed as an active ingredient on the label, which should tell you something.
- Nullifidian, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Zicam does NOTHING it is a placebo.
NyQuil kicked ass back in the early 90's, now its nothing but syrup and booze. - dbstovall, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1As long as NyQuil will make me sleep for 20 hours straight, I got no problem with this
- jschrab, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Atomic Fireballs (Cinnamon candy) as decongestant.
- cypher35, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1give me a break... how is it their responsibility what the consumers do with their product. stick with what works.
- Ryokurin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1same goes with Sudafed PE. but at least they didn't lose a function when they changed the formula.
- ecnate, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I seriously thought this was some urban myth, but apparently not. I loved that stuff.
http://vicks.com/pseudoephederine_faq.shtml - diggscreenname, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"MindTrigger: which civil liberties is the ACLU ignoring? Or, phrased another way, what is it that they are doing/not doing (specifically) that pisses you off?"
The ACLU refuses to acknowledge that the second amendment exists and they routinely represent pedophiles. These are the problems I have with them and this is why they will never see a penny of my money.
BTW, phenylphedrine blows compared to pseudophedrine. It is utterly useless at clearing up my congestion. - moracity, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1What about the generic NyQuil/DayQuil gels? They contain no alcohol. Those have always worked the best for me and as far as I know still have pseudoephedrine in them.
The problem with Acetaminophen is that people don't use the proper dosage or use it properly. Popping 4 Maximum Strength Tylenol for on daily basis is not good. More != better/quicker pain relief. In fact most people use Tylenol when they should be using an NSAID like Advil. If you don't know what something does, you shouldn't be taking it...whether it's OTC or not.
Oh, and stop wasting your money on name brand OTC medications. The generics are at least 1/2 the price in most cases and there is no chemical difference. In my experience, the generics tend to be more effective. Try your own tests. - AhronZombi, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"DXM =meth" HaHa not even almost, someone is retarded. DXM is perfectly safe unless your not mentally stable.
- Oxygen, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Screw that Hippy BS. When I've got a 104 degree fever I want something that'll dope me up good, not some guy banging on a wind-chime over my head!
- Undertakernv, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Bastards. I just bought some NyQuil two days ago and I was wondering why it was utterly useless (besides making me groggy). Now I know why...
- Sell, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1i've gotten high on DM 100's of times prolly around 330 times or better. I'm sure it F'd up my liver not to mention that sometimes its hard to take a piss. STAY AWAY FROM IT, TIS BAD *****
- lokon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Wow geeks are really stupid when it comes to drugs and chemistry. DXM does not = meth nor does it = codeine. DXM is a disassociative in the same family as PCP and Ketamine. It's not really at risk for abuse because most people don't like it, they will get ***** up on it once and get sick and feel crazy and never do it again. Many people have allergic reactions to the high dosage needed to get high as well.
- outside4, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Thank you to the "war on drugs". It's doing such a great job! /sarcasm
When will people know that these old tried and failed tactics doesn't stop the screw-ups of our world from screwing up? The only people who suffer are us tax-payers who put up with this crap. - Chasuk, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1diggscreenname:
The ACLU _does_ support the second amendment, although their interpretation of it varies from yours. In their words:
http://www.aclu.org//police/gen/14523res20020304.html
As for representing pedophiles, the ACLU represents everyone. It takes a lot of integrity to represent everyone equally, which is why they get plenty of my pennies. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1DAMMIT! How am I supposed to makemy crystal meth now? It's almost like they don't want me to make it.
- zbeast, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I'm glad that I'm over my cold. I use to be a buyer of NyQuil but with out Phenylephrine your just buying a bottle of syrup and alcohol.
You know what, this will do nothing to stop the manufacture of Meth. It will just slow down the shopping list meth cooks.
Most of the people that are in the drug chem trade are so far beyond trying to extract Phenylephrine from cold drugs.
Why go through all that work. - whitesanjuro, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1in wisconsin pseudoephedrine is essentially illegal to buy thanks to a law passed in mid-october. you are limited to buying one package/day and the pharmacist must record your name and photocopy a state-issued ID. this is stupid because the people who make meth don't buy retail anyway, its simply another push to test how likly people are to give away their liberty and the people have certainly spoken. "take it away, let us sleep in cages with IV antibiotics and television pumped into our brains!"
- gol706, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1This drug crackdown is such a huge pain in the ass. At Wallgreens here in Texas you have to go up to the pharmacist and have them take your license and copy down all of your information. And you are only allowed to buy so many mg a month of the pseudoephedrine content, about 2 weeks worth. They were claiming that they were going to implement a statewide computer tracking system so you couldn't just go to another store down the street. That really scares me because that amounts to government tracking of what we buy.
Oddly enough the grocery store across the street still has the stuff on the shelves. - nudnick, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Idiocy. People need to realize those who want to abuse drugs will. There is no justifiable reason to remove a medicine like this that is so widespread and useful the the public because a select few decide to abuse it.
- Linuxrocks, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1God damn Nyquil was my favorite medicine for colds.
- munboy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0The Wal-Mart offbrand for DayQuil has the old ingredient. And even though Walgreens hides it with the pharmacist, you can get how ever much you want off the shelves at our Wal-Mart.
