- Jabrams2, on 12/23/2008, -3/+257now I just need to type in the address of that bastard who stole my lunch money in 5th grade, and see if I'm affected by the blast's radius.
- logic6, on 12/23/2008, -1/+173That asteroid collision bomb is frickin huge.
- Clad, on 12/23/2008, -5/+153HAHA! YOU ARE ALL NOW ON THE TERROR WATCHLIST!
- kinneys, on 12/23/2008, -2/+1092 Words - "TSAR BOMBA"
- danwallace, on 12/23/2008, -2/+96Right, because I can see a terrorist sitting there on his mk28 going "*****, I would love to use this thing but I just don't know if the blast radius from my detonation point in the Lincoln Tunnel will reach those ***** in Newark that called me a jerk the other day... Oh wait a second. What is this on Digg? PRAISE ALLAH!"
- IJstickI, on 12/23/2008, -1/+87hopefully terrorists don't get a hold of...asteroids
- jsdratm, on 12/23/2008, -2/+85Which ring turns people into ghouls?
- bryson430, on 12/23/2008, -3/+84Most are surprisingly small. I assume the radiation sickness radius is much larger?
- cyclopssmiley, on 12/23/2008, -1/+76Secret Service is already on their way
- inajeep, on 12/23/2008, -2/+75Are we talking on the ground burst of above ground burst? Of course this doesn't take into effect if you live near or on a mountain. I'd like to see a break down of building and it's ability to withstand the pressure wave.
Ground zero - incinerated (even cockroaches)
Next ring - concrete and steel only thing standing, no glass in windows.
Next ring - brick buildings standing, wood structures torched, no glass
next ring - minor damage to glass and poorly constructed buildings, most buildings intact
Next ring - knocked your lawn gnome over - EvilFerret, on 12/23/2008, -0/+71Let's just hope the terrorists don't get their hands on an asteroid.
- inactive, on 12/23/2008, -0/+67GOOD GOD. An asteroid impact would, um... suck.
- Grahamcracker, on 12/23/2008, -1/+67Well, there goes the neighborhood. And the greater metropolitan area.
- Pinkertinkle, on 12/23/2008, -12/+76Let's put in hiroshima.
- N1tro, on 12/23/2008, -0/+57im thinking if your smart enough to get a nuke you may be able to do these calculations...
- sinkhead, on 12/23/2008, -3/+58It's not a bomb. It's an actual asteroid collision.
- fyngyrz, on 12/23/2008, -10/+58The problem is, this thing has nothing between the Tsar (50mt, and a very unlikely weapons yield... too heavy for missile delivery) and 1.4mt, a fairly low yield for significant targets.
Most serious targets would be targetted with multiple 3-5mt weapons; hardened targets would typically receive multiple 10mt to 20mt weapons. Really hard targets... something like the man made caverns in the Rockies – would get such a pasting that it wouldn't matter if they were destroyed internally or not – the surface would leave no ingress or egress.
So while entertaining, it's difficult to get a sense of what would actually happen from this applet.
One useful thing it does do is show how limited the destruction radius is even for a 50mt weapon; people are constantly over-estimating the destructive capabilities of fission and fusion weapons. And death, after all, is death – no matter what the cause.
I give it... ten years before some camel-jockey manages to set a "borrowed" weapon off on an "infidel" target. Religion. It's what is going to make your breakfast glow. - isny, on 12/23/2008, -3/+46Where's the kaboom? There was supposed to be an earth-shattering "kaboom".
- boardthis, on 12/23/2008, -2/+45how much damage would a thrown shoe make?
- OneLess, on 12/24/2008, -0/+43Lawn gnomes are actually well known to be impervious to atomic blasts.
- inactive, on 12/23/2008, -4/+46Awww too soon?
- 8bitflu, on 12/23/2008, -8/+46Fred Fredrickson - silly name: Often cries when watching The Fox and the Hound. Owns a signed copy of The Notebook, and also believes that his level of "taste" is indicative of well.....anything.
- inactive, on 12/23/2008, -0/+35 .. The 50mt would melt the icy heart of my evil ex-wife ..
- JSheldrick, on 12/23/2008, -0/+34Not sure, but stock on your Rad-X and you should be OK in the yellow ring.
- pe5t1lence, on 12/23/2008, -0/+33Nothing about the fallout range? Thats the important number.
- Gndoab, on 12/23/2008, -0/+31I'd tell you, but I'm afraid the Secret Service would knock down my door moments later and take me to some undisclosed location in a country that ends in "stan"
- matrim2217, on 12/23/2008, -0/+30I was just thinking the same thing. I'm sure this is a brilliant ploy by Homeland Security to obtain a 100% accurate list of terrorists.... surely they have nothing more advanced than Google Maps Mashup.
- inactive, on 12/23/2008, -4/+33yeah it would be pretty tough to lose your viriginity like that...
- imautobot, on 12/23/2008, -2/+30This is kinda scary. Turns out that if my city gets nuked, I'm on the farthest edge of destruction. In my opinion, that's way worse tha being vaporized at ground zero. Wandering around blind and slowly dying of radiation is NOT the way I want to go out.
- flamesrule, on 12/23/2008, -2/+28You may be the only one who's glad to live in northern Michigan.
- pathouston22, on 12/23/2008, -6/+31Fail.
- ChaosProfessor, on 12/23/2008, -0/+24bad childhood?
- duewydo, on 12/23/2008, -2/+26Now lets input that computer from "War Games" and see what kind of simulations it can pump out.
Actual site: http://www.carloslabs.com/projects/200712B/GroundZ ... - ChaSchva, on 12/23/2008, -1/+24No. What he said was that religion is going to take a swing at you.
- logic6, on 12/23/2008, -3/+23In other news: The White House has asked for North Korea to confirm it has no plans to develop an asteroid. Kim Jong Il has not denied the assertion saying, "That is ludicrous. It doesn't make sense."
- Yez70, on 12/23/2008, -0/+19I was surprised at how small the affected areas were. It made me feel safer actually, as there is nothing with 150 miles of me worth nuking and the chances of fallout from the places that would be hit are slim as to effecting my town.
I'm glad I moved to northern Michigan now. - inactive, on 12/23/2008, -1/+19http://maps.google.com/maps?ie=UTF8&q=Dubya's+ ...
Awaiting your orders, Sir. - mstachiw, on 12/23/2008, -0/+18I live about 15 minutes away from lower manhattan and always wondered if I'd survive a nuke. Good to know I should receive no more than 600 rads which just means I might grow an extra arm or something.
- inactive, on 12/24/2008, -0/+18Never tell me the odds.
- OneLess, on 12/24/2008, -1/+18Dugg because massive amounts of death by crippling radiation is funny.
- PhoenixAvatar2, on 12/23/2008, -0/+17Common misconception, but nuclear power plants can't actually go up like a nuclear bomb. However there is fallout concerns, as evident in Chernobyl.
- bryson430, on 12/23/2008, -1/+17Plug in: Novaya Zemlya. That's where they actually set off the Tsar Bomba: Amazing how insignificant the radius looks once it's out in the bay there.

Holy *****. - kinneys, on 12/23/2008, -7/+23Here's the thing:
1. Chances of an asteroid hitting earth again, zillion to 1.
2. Chances of one of these political / war mongering wack nuts pressing the button. 2 to 1
Not to mention we have Bruce Willis. - ninjatech123, on 12/23/2008, -1/+17It is on there. The "little boy" bomb was the one dropped on Hiroshima.
- outkaster, on 12/23/2008, -0/+15To bad it calculates the bomb at ground level. Normally you would explode the bomb ~8k feet in the air making the overpressure effect a much bigger area of effect. Just know that the real damage would be much greater than this map shows you.
- inactive, on 12/23/2008, -3/+18You know, I wouldn't be surprised if a US city got nuked and the terrorists admit to using this as a guide.
- Jibberwalk, on 12/23/2008, -0/+15... ?
Google didn't code this.
Carlos Labs took the Maps API and did this on their own by inputting an overlay of their own datas. - JediSean12, on 12/23/2008, -6/+21I just spent the last 15 minutes picking a detonation point that would nuke my parents house, but leave mine untouched.
- PamalaLauren, on 12/23/2008, -0/+15I was a bit relieved to say the least when I saw that a hit on Los Angeles wouldn't even come near to effecting my area. I was a bit surprised.
- daimposter, on 12/23/2008, -0/+14just make sure you wait until Jan 21st when he'll be home
