- Falkon, on 10/12/2007, -8/+30This shouldn't come as a surprise to anyone. Schools are TAILORED for girls. Guys naturally don't like to sit in one spot for hours, we like to at least have SOME freedom.
They need to stop diagnosing young boys with ADHD, because we all have it pretty much, and it's normal.
This is why, as much as people probably hate this idea, I think that girls and guys should have seperate schools, or at least classes. After reading the article I see I'm not alone. Yay! Well, good to see the media putting some emphasis on something important...for once.
Alternate solution: Send the feminists to france. - lico05, on 10/12/2007, -1/+22No, it's not that "Girls Are Smarter After All". Read Sommer's "The War Against Boys", it's an eye-opener into the current educational system.
- ajb2015, on 10/12/2007, -1/+19this doesn't mean girls are smarter than boys, it means there is something wrong with the education system.
- cmiller1, on 10/12/2007, -2/+16I seriously feel like, having suffered through school through the 90s as a male, that I would be better off with no education than I am now having been extremely emotionally scarred by the traumatic experience school is for boys these days. All through elementary school I saw exactly what this article was talking about, teachers thought that girls should be favored since when they grew up things worked out in the opposite manner, and boys are seen simply as, defective girls.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+12Yet studies show that Boys are still more successful in Math and Science at the college level than girls. Which goes to show that, although girls do mature faster than boys, we eventually catch up and then begin our domination.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+11So what? Boys also die earlier. Work riskier jobs. Suffer from greater stress and anxiety. None of this is new. If men had the option of staying home and caring for a family and living with mom and dad indefinitely until Mr. Right came along to take care of us, we'd have less problems, too.
- HarryBauzonia, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9"Men make more money than women after all"
Because men work longer hours and take more risks after all. - lovelylad80, on 10/12/2007, -2/+11Since 90% of the teachers at US elementary schools are ex-house wives, i can see why boys aren't learning a thing.
- mightymouse, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7Its these articles that give people this pre-conception that girls are generally more well-behaved and intelligent than men. That is why boys don't succeed early in school- teachers automatically believe that girls are easier to deal with. From my experience, girls start out good... but near the end of their teens they go rampant.
- DanThe1Man, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7"Yeah yeah, girls are better. Too bad men own everything."
-Tim Allen - WhiskyTangoZulu, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7 this study is biased. girls on average excell at communication/verbal skills which is how our education system is setup and god bless them b/c they will be mothers. boys on average excell at hands on building/spatial skills which they don't usually get graded for. for instance when i was in 2nd grade my buddies and i couldn't wait to get outside to dam up a ditch on the schools property, build a bridge over this ditch and check what was swimming in it. while the girls never ventured far from the monkey bars or swing set so they could socialize. now which behavior seems more intelligent?
- gronne, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6No it's because the education system has failed young boys. They cater to the styles of girls and treat boys like they're "defective girls" when they act out. See this:

The only thing that seperates women from men is that men don't gather in groups like rabbid animals for a cause and thus they miss out. They miss out on health, they miss out on education, etc. They're too lazy to give a damn, and that is man's shortcoming.
- TheNik, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Yeah, I think I will gladly give up one point of my IQ to be free from the mentral cycle. ;)
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6"When Cris Messler of Mountainside, N.J., brought her 3-year-old son Sam to a pediatrician to get him checked for ADHD"
What the *****?!
He's THREE.
Parents have become more neurotic and sick than ever. This is just scary. - sunmicroman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Girls aren't smarter than boys and boys aren't smarter than girls. Intelligence is an individual trait, and while both genders excel at some things as a whole over the other, none are less valuable or less important to the other and both have their own smart and not so smart members.
- drbhoneydew, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Actually, it's not necessarily that girls are smarter - boys are simply more likely at the extremes in the intelligence spectrum. Because girls have two X chromosomes, they have a backup plan if one of them is faulty. Similarly, if they have a particularly good one, its effect is likely to be lessened by an ordinary one. In contrast, boys are more likely to suffer if they have a dodgy X chromosome and excel with a particularly good one.
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/sci/tech/4355355.stm explains it rather better than I. - admirabumblebee, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Well, let's see...
My wife got straight A's in school. I got straight D's.
She works at a grocery store, I own my own business and make good $$. Im also well respected in my feild.
Schools are tailored for girls education, not boys. They teach memorization and regurgitation of facts. Men by nature are generally more curious about the why of things rather than simply what. Women generally are more apt to settle with simply knowing "what". The main contirbuting factor why men are generally more skilled in multi-step subjects.
Oh well, stereotypes have a lot to say in the regard. The secretary who keeps track and the boss who gives the secretary all the ideas to keep track of. - thenativeraver, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7People have different learning styles, I may learn something different than someone else.
This study is bs. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6"They're too lazy to give a damn, and that is man's shortcoming."
I wouldn't say men are too lazy to give a damn. They are too busy getting an education in highschool and college. Then they are too busy pursuing a mate and a career and then busting their asses until the day they die, despite stress and health problems and every other miserable thing, to provide for their family.
If men had the "option" of working or not and the "option" of staying at home with kids versus working a stressful or even life-risking job and could opt to let the other person take care of all the expenses and work for the family, I'm sure they would have a lot more time to dedicate to "causes". - fatlip, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6boys = overly diagnosed with ad(h)d
ad(h)d = ritalin
ritalin makes you stupid
end of story. - piper999, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4When girls were being outperformed by boys it was apparently the fault of the education system favoring boys.
Now things have changed and girls are outperforming boys it is apparently the fault of the boys themselves.
Unless girls have miraculously evolved to be smarter (or boys to be dumber) the problem is obviously due to teaching methods and/or methods of appraisal which should be changed as soon as possible as far as I'm concerned.
Blaming (male) children for the failure of the education system to accommodate them is just ridiculous. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5On the other hand, once they become adults and join the educational system, it seems like boys and girls are both just as likely to rape their students. See drudgereport for just the latest story of a teacher raping her 11 year old student. Seems like we get these every day.
I too made it through school in the mid 80s through early 90s. And yes, most teachers are bitter housewive types. The kind that often have a grudge against males, period. I was forced into wrestling as a sport for my entire youth (starting at the age of five) by my step dad. I had two different female teachers actually HOLD MY SPORT AGAINST ME simply because they were of the opinion that males were violent and dangerous and responsible for everything bad and that by me being in a contact sport (that I didn't even have a choice to be part of or not, mind you), she felt I was a lost cause.
Schools are very messed up and they have been for awhile. But rather than hearing about the hardships boys have to overcome in schools, all you ever hear about is how "boys are so mean and eager to answer questions that nobody ever calls on a girl with her hand raised for the answers". *eyeroll*.
Not that girls have it much easier, mind you - if nothing else they definitely have lots of difficulties when it comes to having to play the social status/networking game in school just to survive. - micahglasser, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I was a "learning disabled" "special ed" kid in elementary school. I had to go to special classes, was labeled ADD, was continually grounded for having poor grades, etc., etc.
Then I went to college where I graduated with a 3.8 in three years and then I went and got a master's in philosophy.
Now, looking back, it seems as though the less one fits in in one's formative years the more likely it is that one is exceptional in some way.
To this day when I meet a woman who is a school teacher I cringe. - avgbody, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Yeah... But it's more likely that men are placed as geniuses also.... We men are variant across the board, some are good at thinking, while others are good at physical activities. Women on the other hand are more in the middle of the boat in everything.
- Bethling, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Wow. Just one sexist comment after another. I honestly didn't expect it to be that blatant.
The K-12 system is screwed up - for both boys and girls. My experiences are obviously different than most of the commenters. I bet none of the guys were told that a Home Ec class would be more useful than a computer science class, or that the engineering school they wanted to apply to was just a waste of time.
We've got to figure out how to educate children in the best way for them, and not let stereotypes dictate our teaching methods :-/ - ComputerMan, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4I belive that these schools were custom-made for girls.
Look at it, you've gotta make up some wierd story. Use your imagination says the teacher. And then demote us men because we don't have a nice clean one like the girls. I'm sorry, it's the way it is. Also, whats with states and all these tests? I live in NY and I flip them off! ..!.. (finger)
So, yes, these schools are for girls. Mainly on the writing. WHO THE HELL WOULD LIKE TO SIT IN ONE PLACE AND JUST WRITE till you drop? Now, shop class. mmmm. - panic, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3The education system is definitely more geared towards the behavior of girls. I feel like I can't sit still for too long without tinkering with something, I definitely can't sit around reading text books all day. Perhaps I have ADHD, who knows.. I would always get D's and C's in school, but I wasn't an idiot, I just didn't care, and sitting around trying to get good grades was THE LAST thing that I cared about. Anyway, saying Girls are smarter is just stupid. All of the most brilliant people of all time have been men. Einstein for example?
- GuyNextDoor, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Ha...way to stir up the majority MALE demographic of Digg.com...this didn't even need to link to any article..the title alone sufficed!
Hasn't anyone wondered why K-12 has a majority of WOMAN teachers, but once you reach the collegiate level, it's a majority MALE Professor demographic? I always thought that was such a huge disparity. Anyways, I'm not gonna comment on this anymore, as this would take too much of my time. :) - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4at anyrate......the learders of the world are mostly comprised of..........

Boys and girls learn in different ways, at my school 'most' of the girls write pages of work, when 'most' of the boys write little, even though there is no obvious intelligence gap, its just different learning and ability styles. - wardrive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4So is that why the majority of techs, geeks and engineers are MEN. Women may be smarter, they probably will never use it becuase they can "multitask" or rather... get knocked up when they're 15.
- thidranki, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4How ironic, this article was written by a woman...
- anamanaman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2These types of fluff articles are incredibly lame
MSN.com has this kind of junk on the homepage every day - whitesanjuro, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3FTFA:
"Spend a few minutes on the phone with Danny Frankhuizen and you come away thinking, "What a nice boy." He's thoughtful, articulate, bright. He has a good relationship with his mom, goes to church every Sunday, loves the rock band Phish and spends hours each day practicing his guitar. But once he's inside his large public Salt Lake City high school, everything seems to go wrong. He's 16, but he can't stay organized. He finishes his homework and then can't find it in his backpack. He loses focus in class, and his teachers, with 40 kids to wrangle, aren't much help. ... What's wrong with Danny?"
danny is a pothead, duh... - decompiler, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4wow... there are a lot more sexist bastards on digg than i would've thought...
are you guys that threatened by this kind of thing that you reduce yourselves to, "OH YEAH? WELL WE PWN EVERYTH1NG!!11!1!one!uno!" it's pathetic. and frankly, as a man-g33k, i'm saddened to be lumped with you neanderthals.
i think this study is BS, too. not because i think guys are smarter than girls, but because we all learn in different ways. my wife is a teacher, and i can tell you this: don't blame the school system for kids being obnoxious idiots that won't stay in there seats in class, and mouth off to the teacher. their parents let them get away with murder.
as a parent i have five simple pieces of advice for everyone who wants to have intelligent kids (boys or girls) 1-read to them everyday; 2-tell them NO once in a while; 3-if they're bad, punish them (and i'm not talking about time outs); 4-stop giving them so much g0d damn sugar; and 5-love them, and make sure they know you love them. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3For those who have not actually checked the article out. Here is an example of the extreme bias - just in the headline, before the article even starts:
"The Trouble With Boys: They're kinetic, maddening and failing at school."
"Girls goto school to learn, guys goto school for the girls :)"
No. Girls go to school to socialize. The same reason they go to college: socialize and meet an aspiring doctor (or whatever) to take care of them. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2"When girls were being outperformed by boys it was apparently the fault of the education system favoring boys.
Now things have changed and girls are outperforming boys it is apparently the fault of the boys themselves."
Well, according to the article, yes it actually is. The last page of the article suggests that the biggest indicator of a boy's success is whether he has a father or not. 40% of boys are without their father or with a single-mother. Of course, this is pretty much common sense. Children with both parents tend to do better (be smarter, healthier, happier, more successful, less likely to be in jail). And of course, it's only the father's fault. That the father isn't around certainly is never the result of a mother's complete lack of attention to what type of man she was spreading her legs for or the lack of preperation in having a child (an "accident") or leaving for another man or picking a druggie or anything else. No, it's entirely the male's fault only.
But yeah. What a terribly biased article. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I say, screw all this sexist *****. Some people are better at things than other people, regardless of race, color, or sex. That's all there is to it. I can quote statistics all day on both sides of the argument which does nothing but underline my original statement.
When are people going to learn that there's nothing more foolish than painting humanity with a broad brush? - lovelylad80, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2This is a very important study and needs to be address ASAP!
By the way, most of these concerns about boys falling behind have been exposed by WOMEN, so don't make this a Girls vs. Boys issue.
The Ed. System needs a re haul and a good start would have more Male teachers at the elementary level. Real Men, not men having to pretend they are women. The occupation of Elementary School Teacher has become a "non-male" field and it is hurting our boys AND girls. - CaptainMal, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2A recent meta-study just released shows defnitively that 98% of all gender-related statistics are pulled out of someone's arse. Now the only question remains is whether the arse itself was male or female.
- tw0bit, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2And look whos its writen by... a girl. Instant bias
- inkswamp, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I am a father to a boy and girl and can tell you that they are both equally intelligent children but excel in different areas. That's true of all children. Gender is irrelevant.
My daughter was extraordinarily verbal at a young age, speaking multi-word phrases by age one and was an amazing problem solver. My son didn't reach that point until past age two. However, he has shown a stunning aptitude for art and music, humming back melodies I taught him pitch-perfect before age one, something my daughter, six years older than he is, still can't really do.
If there is any perception that one sex is smarter than the other, I would be suspicious of the criteria on which they were judged. You can skew any test by focusing on one area to the exclusion of the other. - eviltwnn, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I agree that boys do better if they are in all boys classes, and the same for girls. however, boys are not getting stupider. Here is an essay I wrote for my English class:
The idea that “boys are falling behind in every level of education” is merely a myth. A comparison between boys to girls is not realistic because of the distinct differences between the two sexes. In the past, girls were considered to be falling behind, and excessive time and energy was put into reviving the gender and creating a fair balance in the academic attention and athletic opportunities between the sexes. Exempt from this attention, boys continued to developed unnoticed academic problems. All of this was also happening in a specific demographic area, mostly in large public co-ed schools where individual student attention is difficult. Boys are not falling behind, they are just not getting the required attention at the right time and are being compared to a completely different gender that is know to develop quicker.
Girls were lagging in the 1970s, and federal law stepped in to make sure that girls would not be left behind. Title IX forced schools to include academic curriculum that equally included boys and girls and provided equal opportunities in the classroom for both sexes. It also enforced equal athletic opportunities. While the girls were receiving a large amount of attention, the boys were left in the dark. Their problems were ignored, and boys became considered as “defective girls,” an outrageous label which resulted from unfair treatment in the classroom. Boys simply were not receiving enough attention, and it was not their fault that their performance in the classroom was altered negatively.
In addition to receiving less attention in the classroom, boys are unique when it comes to development. Researcher at Vanderbilt University conducted tests with 8000 boys and girls between the ages of 5 and 18. Kindergarten aged participates in both sexes performed similarly, processing information at the same speeds. In early adolescent, girls performed significantly faster and processed more information correctly. Boy and girl seniors in high school completed the tests with similar speed and accuracy. Girls develop their brains much earlier than boys, who lag behind girls developmentally by approximately 18 months. The adolescent girls, therefore, have an unfair advantage which is their quick development. The comparison between boys and girls at this age is unrealistic and inaccurate, and we cannot say that boys are lagging behind girls significantly. - chrisc2, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2If this proved anything, it proved that there are little to no female posters here on digg...
- rach, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4My goodness. It's amazing how sexist some boys can get when they don't think any girls are around to eavesdrop.
- kakapu4u, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Guys are good at shop class?
Maybe this is worth expanding on... Instead of writing essays about the inspiration of Mark Twain or translating Shakespeare into modern english, what if all students were given the choice between that and some kind of writing assignment based on shop class?
Making a bird-house? Write a paper to accompany it about the choice of construction materials or how the design of the house is chosen to target a group of bird species. Combine shop class and language composition. - WDot, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I was homeschooled for my first few years. When I came to public schools in about 4th grade, I blew ahead of everybody else because everything was so freaking easy. I followed the rules, I read, I did everything a good student (aka slave to the system) was supposed to do. Now, I still get A's, but it's hard because I've gotten disorganized, bored with the idiotic classes (Teachers explain in fifty minutes what they could explain in five), and loaded with gratuitous homework. I still read, I still follow the rules, and I'm a good kid. But I waste my time listening to lectures when I could be DOING something useful or creative.
But I hate the school system with a passion. To be honest, I'd rather side with the ADHD kid who is in a mutual hate relationship with the school, mouths off, and drinks. Not because I'm just trying to be rebellious or that I support mouthing off and drinking, but because HE'S RIGHT. A lot of boys I know are targeted by vice principals, whether they are bad or not. Druggies get stopped in the hall when they aren't doing drugs. Perfectly normal boys are stopped in the hall, accused of using drugs. I remember a slew of friends who were hauled into the office because they DIDN'T SIGN IN AT LUNCH.
The current school system is Not Boy Friendly. I wonder if it's even child friendly. The only reason I haven't dropped out of this crap is because of the hope that after school I'll go indie and be HAPPY. -
