Pictures are cool though! - Perk, on 06/20/2008, -0/+11My dad was an AWRO with both the 53rd (Keesler, MS) and 54th (Anderson, Guam) Weather Recon squadrons back in the 80s. Hurricane's actually aren't bad to fly in, the wind tends to be straight line... just fast. A C-130 cruises at 290 knots however, and the fastest recorded hurricane winds have been right at 200 knots, so from an aerodynamic standpoint there's no issue. Even flying dead into a 200 knot wind, the 130 would be well above stall speed. From Dad's stories, the only part that gets really hairy is penetrating the eye wall.
In the fifty years that the Airforce and now NOAA have been flying into storms, there's only ever been one lost plane. That was a 130 from the 54th on Guam that disappeared on a non-penetration mission over southeast Asia in the mid 1970's. - inactive, on 06/20/2008, -0/+7Awesome pictures, but the lack of a "next" button is so irritating!

This man has balls. - inactive, on 06/20/2008, -0/+4Why are picture sites so badly designed? They should at least take up the entire white box.
- Toshibi, on 06/20/2008, -0/+3The eye is really calm and really eerie. Having lived through a few hurricanes, but further inland, I usually stand on my porch and watch them roll through.
- jeffsback2223, on 06/20/2008, -0/+3Pretty cool, though you'd never convince me to fly into the eye of a hurricane!
- deepbl, on 06/20/2008, -0/+2I wouldn't call those pictures "great".. most of them are indistinguishable from closeup images of fluffy white clouds.
- GliTCH82, on 06/20/2008, -0/+2Well, they're scientists, and it's the government. I mean just look at how long it took Linux to get any kind of navigation at all. In fact, I think a lot of people on here still navigate Linux with a command line, because it's exciting.
- fr3ddie, on 06/20/2008, -0/+2more like mediocre pics with great views.
- MattFid, on 06/20/2008, -0/+2And I believe given his status when that photo was taken they could be classified as "Man Moons"
He is a braver man than me... however most men are. - QsheiK, on 06/20/2008, -0/+1Reminds me of the final boss fight in Darius Gaiden that takes place in the eye of a hurricane.
- inactive, on 06/23/2008, -0/+1Wow awesome!!!!
- robszol, on 06/20/2008, -0/+1See guys, hurricanes CAN be nice
- Toshibi, on 06/20/2008, -0/+1I was offered that MOS when I was looking into joining the Army. Should have went...love big storms.
- sudsandsoda, on 06/20/2008, -0/+1are these not more 'over' than "inside"...
- FreeTalkLIve, on 06/20/2008, -0/+1Hurricanes remind me of stargates.
/Supergates - inactive, on 06/20/2008, -0/+1Eyes of a hurricane ...God's gloryhole.
- Frecklefoot, on 06/20/2008, -0/+1I thought this was pictures from inside _tornadoes_. Hurricanes, eh, not as exciting.
- davidhallstrom, on 06/21/2008, -0/+1Great images, thank you.
- inactive, on 06/20/2008, -0/+1Meteorology nerds.
- inactive, on 06/20/2008, -0/+1looks tranquil from up there.... so looks CAN be deceiving.
- whalt, on 06/21/2008, -0/+1Eye of a hurricane, listen to yourself churn
World serves its own needs, don't miserve your own needs
speed it up a notch, speak, grunt, no strength
The ladder start to clatter with fear of height, down height
Wire in a fire representing seven games
And a government for hire at a combat site
... - kagayaki1, on 06/20/2008, -0/+1Pictures are pretty poor quality, very noisy. However, some of the pics in the first comment are actually pretty good.
- Enderplayer1, on 06/20/2008, -1/+1Here I am rock you like a hurricane.
- michaelk2k5, on 06/20/2008, -0/+0its really not that interesting
- David1478, on 06/20/2008, -0/+0Looks incredible!
- ShadowFoxxx, on 06/20/2008, -1/+0An airplane is about the worst place to be when you're near a hurricane. Nice to look at...through the internet.
- hoopy22, on 06/20/2008, -1/+0Great pics??? Mediocre at best.
Hey, my captcha is 4u2tu. That would be a great band name. - deauouph, on 06/20/2008, -5/+0absolutely stupendous. wow
