- fatherdaly, on 09/01/2008, -4/+114Not this ***** again.
- sjbdallas, on 09/01/2008, -0/+81Can we get a good ruling on whether this will really end the world? If it will, there's a ton of stuff I want to do in the next nine days.
- gingerwynn, on 09/01/2008, -1/+81I read an article on this recently. The builders of the Hadron Collider believe it would virtually impossible for any "black hole" to be created. Note: Stephen Hawking – who argues that even if black holes developed, “they would instantly evaporate.”
- DeskFlyer, on 09/01/2008, -3/+79Cue the "Not this ***** again" guy.
- inactive, on 09/01/2008, -5/+60I'd laugh if the end result was a piece of paper that read: Adam had a penis Eve had a vagina.
- YodaJones, on 09/01/2008, -1/+50I'm ready. Fire that ***** up. a little black hole never hurt anybody.
I knew America would never have to replay it's debts. I hope the fed is running the money presses 24/7 so we can all party like it's 1984. - taylor219, on 09/01/2008, -0/+43They're just sending beams around in 9 days. We have almost 1.5 months until the world ends as that's when they start colliding. That's PLENTY of time to get all of your affairs in order.
- worldchanger, on 09/01/2008, -0/+39so ... I can quit my job and travel on my credit cards now?
- Shogun6996, on 09/01/2008, -3/+39Yea they will prbably run this test and you wont even be able to see what happens. THe data will be analyzed on computers and that will be that.
- awesometastic1, on 09/01/2008, -4/+37sorry, but these idiots know nothing of physics apparently. they are the same type of people who actually thought that detonating a nuclear bomb would cause a chain reaction that would destroy the world (and indeed some thought the universe, not really sure how they thought that would have worked, but here we are). Anybody who understood the science behind the nuclear explosions and indeed in this case the Collider was and is not worried.
- mambanamba, on 09/01/2008, -1/+31ill bet anyone $100,000 it won't destroy the world
- jos22, on 09/01/2008, -1/+27***** daily mail rag of a paper likes to do nothing but print crap and stirr trouble
- YodaJones, on 09/01/2008, -1/+26Did Stephen Hawking really say that? Well, he seems normal to me. Let's do it.
- superandy47, on 09/01/2008, -0/+25If you're looking for a 'good ruling' on anything, the Daily Mail is the worst place you could possibly look.
- DeskFlyer, on 09/01/2008, -10/+32Eve actually had another chick and a cup.
- jshare, on 09/01/2008, -0/+22"The lifespan of any mini-black holes would be 'very short', it added."
Oh good. - Sardonic2U, on 09/01/2008, -0/+21We're not THAT smart are we?
- lazyink, on 09/01/2008, -7/+27not again! this both old and inaccurate..
- cmyk, on 09/01/2008, -3/+23The LHC isn't going to do anything that zillions of cosmic rays do to the earth every second for the last, ohh, 4.5 billions years.
- DirtyMuslims, on 09/01/2008, -2/+20I for one welcome the end of the world. Bring it on, I have a first row seat!!!
- handheldchimp, on 09/01/2008, -2/+19Steven Hawking said it's good! Fire it off!!
- LordoftheFly, on 09/01/2008, -0/+17Clever.
- IphtashuFitz, on 09/02/2008, -2/+17$1,000 says you don't lose your virginity before the LHC is fired up. Paying for it doesn't count.
- o0dhacker0o, on 09/01/2008, -2/+16Well played...
- Oronar, on 09/01/2008, -2/+15We have. The answer is no. Stop listening to the crackpots.
- Ramble, on 09/01/2008, -1/+14That presents quite the dilemma - one £100 hooker or ten £10 hookers?
- johnnick, on 09/01/2008, -4/+17This is just sensationlist FUD and it's just as bad as the "virus warnings" that claim, "Someone at Microsoft said this is the worst threat ever." Note that the scientist referenced in the article is a chemist. Until someone shows me that he's got the credentials to back up his "calculations," I'm not gonna worry a bit about this. We all mock the people who spread those types of virus warnings, put the same level of common sense analysis into this. And if that doesn't help, read this article: http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2008/06/08062 ...
- arlok789, on 09/01/2008, -5/+16Sensationalism drives media revenues. It's a sad fact of life that there is no such thing as an unbiased media outlet.
As far as the Hadron goes, I don't give a damn if it might create a black hole. Knowing more about the universe is worth the risk. That's part of being human and any pussy that says otherwise prolly is too afraid to try to stop it from happening. - BrokenCircle, on 09/01/2008, -1/+10Hardon on collider; NSWF?
- InfiniteNothing, on 09/01/2008, -0/+9Of course he'd say that. He can't back down from Hawking radiation now. ;)
- speel, on 09/01/2008, -0/+9You better not blow up the world *****.
- LiberalKid, on 09/02/2008, -1/+10Can you not read? They don't start colliding particles for another month yet, they're not waiting a month for a beam to go around the Hardon Collider..
- stonebear, on 09/01/2008, -0/+8You are supposed to be living each day as if it's your last anyway, so forget about this thing and get busy. :^)
- tkstock, on 09/01/2008, -0/+7You've got pretty low aim, havn't you?
- tkstock, on 09/01/2008, -0/+7Or to make advances on that chick you've had your eyes on...
- acrodev, on 09/01/2008, -2/+9Maybe it'll start a new world...
- temsi, on 09/01/2008, -0/+7A hardon collider? Is that a gay porno?
- magicbread, on 09/01/2008, -2/+9Sensationalist rubbish published in the Daily Mail? Well I never! :-o
- AmosCOTW, on 09/01/2008, -0/+6You should start doing some of that stuff anyway.
- lepster10101, on 09/01/2008, -0/+6It's the end of the world as we know it, and I feel fine!
- KloroFormd, on 09/01/2008, -0/+6Dugg for 'hardon'
- Kronos6948, on 09/01/2008, -0/+5I think it's called "Docking".
- MaxMWood, on 09/01/2008, -2/+7Photos from my trip to CERN:
http://www.flickr.com/photos/maxwood/sets/72157603 ... - inactive, on 09/02/2008, -1/+6You are nearly entirely wrong. The amount of mass has nothing to do with a black hole, it is all about density. If you clump a couple of protons in a small enough space, they will make a black hole. It only takes two protons, and you only have to overcome the weak nuclear force. Specifically you have to push the protons close enough together that gravity overtakes the weak nuclear forces ability to push them apart.
When you have a gravitational black hole, you need lots of mass because gravity is by far the weakest of the fundamental forces. These black holes will be formed with electromagnetic forces, which is many orders of power stronger than gravity. So many orders of power less mass is needed.
To give you the idea of the power of the LHC, individual protons will have the same inertia as a car traveling at 100 mph. That is much more dense than neutron star material, and even more dense than (still hypothetical but lots of circumstantial evidence) black holes.
Like it or not, the LHC will do for particle physics what the Hubble telescope did for astronomy, which is to say, it will one way or another rewrite all the physics books.
The math that suggests that Standard Model is at least somewhat wrong, and string theory rules, is very compelling, and this will be the first test.
If they start making black holes, the standard model is out, and everything we know about electrons will have to be rewritten.
I however think the small chance that this device will create radiations that will end the world or even all of existence are worth it. - inactive, on 09/01/2008, -2/+7BLAH BLAH BLAH BLACKHOLE BLAH BLAH END OF THE WORLD
That's all I ever hear about the Hadron Collider. Everyone is so negative. - souljaboy6666, on 09/01/2008, -0/+5Yeah, just like the A-bomb was going to evaporate the atmosphere.
- Ramble, on 09/01/2008, -0/+5Then you study the new particle to see what it does.
- jsauter, on 09/01/2008, -0/+5I would be more of an implosion, actually.
- LeviTheSmith, on 09/01/2008, -0/+5We patent it and sell Sell SELL!
