- johndi, on 10/12/2007, -1/+30Sounds like somebody needs a cup of coffee.
- konradk, on 10/12/2007, -1/+14"...coffee could make a person more easily persuaded, because the volunteers were only more open to persuasion when they could concentrate on and assimilate the persuasive argument..."
So that means it's easier to persuade you if you actually pay attention. I can see their point, but this does not neccessary mean someone is open-minded, imho. - Xoligy, on 10/12/2007, -1/+11So remember boys and girls, next time you need to borrow money, drug up your parents on coffee ;)
- SkeletaLlama, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8I think that's why it's customary to invite a woman you want in to "have a cup of coffee" after a nice date.
- tuna1, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8...Except for all those pretentious, Starbucks *****.
- buddylee415, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8This is a lie. My girlfriend drinks coffee all the time and she's not open to persuasion.
- akhoslogos, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7Wow, that article has a good point. (sips his morning cup of coffee)
- pharekyz, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8Perhaps I should get the hot girl from the bar drunk of coffee instead of alchohol! That way she will still be open minded without the side-effects of you know... barfing and passing out....
- MoonKing, on 10/12/2007, -4/+9He said ANtonymous. Very different from autonymous.
- MuffinMan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Giggity Giggity Goo!
- duke, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Don't be so closed-minded!
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I don't know if I can believe this... sip... sip... well... sip... sip... maybe he has a good point
- chrisfoxinc, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I mentioned this to the tea-drinkers at work, but they weren't open to the idea
- WrecksTXP, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3My kids love coffee. I've been controlling...uh...rewarding them with it for years.
- popcultureicon, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5"I can't remember where"
surely not slashdot.
6 months ago. - cazabam, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4Could well have been. Are we counting cross-site dupes now :-)
- duke, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5That'll teach me to read without my glasses. Sorry. :(
But even so, how are they remotely antonyms? I don't think it's me who doesn't know the meaning of words. - pharekyz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2That isnt nessesarily true. Coffee contains harsh and bitter flavors, yes. But it has been shown that as we age, we lose sensitivity to certain types of tastes. That is why adults like things like beer, wine, coffee while children cringe at the though of it.
- mz00m, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3I just had two cups, and I feel no reason to challenge that story...
- pharekyz, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Yea but kissing them tastes like ass so who cares
- pharekyz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I'm not paying 3 bucks for a puny can of Red Bull. It just isnt happening.
- rtfx, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Or we could interpret this as coffee promoting M0 behavior:
http://www.reciprocality.org/
(under the radical theory that site proposes, civilized society has conditioned itself to have bored, complacent workers through naturally occuring endocrine functions - we turn off the part of ourselves that makes us think intuitively and with "common sense." Very interesting stuff and potentially applicable to almost all human idiocy.) - antonbondar, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2They have been proving stuff about coffee for years now. Coffee prevents cancer, coffee increases brain activity, yada-yada-yada.. What's next? Coffee enlarges your ... Seriously, where do people get money for these stupid studies?.. I do drink coffee thou' =)
- moojuece, on 10/12/2007, -6/+8@duke:
just because you do not know the meaning of a word does not mean it is a misspelling of a word you know
http://www.google.com/search?q=define%3Aantonymous - Murdats, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1you mean I can make money from using a random number generator and spitting out favourable facts
"These survey results clearly show that using petrol increases life expentancy"
"These figures show that pirating music can frequently lead to impotence"
man im going to be a millionare in no time, according to the results of my study - SloppyJoe, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4I hate coffee, This is stupid.
- Systemind, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1LOL riighttttt, the author of that should work on Starucks for just 1 day...just one and I bet he will change his title. Drinking cofee makes you stupid ( 90 % of starbucks costumers ) is not that cofee is bad, or that everyone that drinks cofee isnt smart...but a lot of people go to starbucks and places like that to spend $4 on a cup of cofee because they think they look cool with a starbucks cup on their hands.
- cazabam, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I can't remember where, but I read another article about this exact subject, with the spin that it provides a reason to always go for in for a coffee after a date. You know, in case you were in need of any persuasion ...
- EvilTwinLee79, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I gotta use this on my boss for my next performance review
- MemoryDump, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1damn.. and I was just "thinking" of quiting! damn you people and your science! (now where's my coffee)
- ngageguy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Totally agree with you after reading this. I am a coffee drinker and this and all the other articles like are pure BS. The studies are probably funded by Starbucks.
- pharekyz, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2"A word having a meaning opposite to that of another word: The word wet is an antonym of the word dry."
Open-mindedness is opposite to persuasiveness? Yeah, he used the word correctly, but that juxtaposition makes no sense. - heldlik, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Hence, my favorite pickup line: ”Wanna go for a coffee?” ;-)
- muppethouse, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Let's not forget that coffee is something that tastes like dirt upon first taste. Once you become accustomed to the taste you begin to like it.
Are closed-minded people likely to try something that tastes bad believing that eventually they will enjoy it? The conclusion of the study is useless at best. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"Girls who smoke and drink coffee put out."
As evidenced by the birth of 'badbox' - CoolWind, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"people who gulp down lattes at business meetings may want to reconsider how the drink is affecting them" - yeah, maybe they don't want to be smart enough to understand what other people are saying, because then they might realize their previous understanding was wrong, and they would have to change their minds.....
- CoolWind, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1The trouble is, caffeine is addictive, meaning you need more and more to get the same effect, and you also get a hangover from it. So you need to take "caffeine holidays" to reset your physiology (during which time you need to take other drugs to counteract the withdrawal symptoms), otherwise you are perpetually duller than you would be if you were always caffeine free.

no, he's just a slashdot fanboy. The come here from time to time to mock us because their creator could've easily have made slashdot, just like Digg, but before Digg existed, but decided not to. So, forever in envy, those fanboys come here to mock us when Digg doesn't work, or when the larger Digg fanbase finds a story remotely similar. - ggspenard, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Drinking alcohol makes girls more open-minded too.
- Uruviel, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Or do openminded people just drink more coffee ...
oh wait thats not wat the fa says - techlinks, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Riiiight. Not according to some people I've met who drink coffee 24/7.
- ajb2015, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I'll agree with that. I'm much friendlier and cooperative after a cup in the morning.
- dbabbitt, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1*disclaimer: I am not a Mormon*
That is the saddest attempt at a joke I've seen on Digg for a long time: self-centered misspelled hyperbole. - Yupp, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Back in my single days, I kept a cappuccino machine at home for after hours entertaining. It worked!
double cap -> big conversation -> establish trust -> the dirty - v3xt0r, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Web2.0, AJAX, bloggers, and fanboys... please, put the coffee down, you're rotting your minds and being easily persuaded w/ misinformation. =p
- TheBarbarian, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I wish ragingpesant, I wish.
Yesterday I saw two people studying their bibles in Starbucks as I was studying for my liberal arts exam, and I thought:
"What! They've entered our bastian of liberalism! What sacred leftist institution will succumb to the religious right next? NPR? No!"
Then I took a sip of my lattee, and everything felt better. - ragingpeasant, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0This might explain the hippie liberal left often frequenting coffee establishments...
- kermit4karate, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0snlildude87, coffee may screw up sleeping schedules, but in return we're on fire while we're awake. Most people are fine with that tradeoff.
- sadler121, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1*disclaimer: I am a Mormon*
I wonder if this is why Utah is the Red est state in the Union. Their all Mormon thus they don't drink Coffee thus they are the most closed minded people in the US (and the world). -
