- Alegoo92, on 10/11/2007, -4/+70These are awfully basic... who didn't utilize these in HS?
- Eshestun, on 10/11/2007, -1/+53Seems more like common sense to me.
- NoOneButMe, on 10/11/2007, -2/+26I've kinda picked up on most of these in HS since i hated carrying a calculator around .. or any other supplies really .. but these are pretty useful tips to know
- chime, on 10/11/2007, -0/+22Here's a few I like:
Multiple by 5: Divide by two, add zero at the end.
Similarly, 20% tip: Double and take off the last digit
Remember the divisibility rules - /2 = ends in even number, /3 = digits recursively add up to 3, 6, or 9, /4 = last two digits are divisible by 4. /5 = last digit = 0 or 5. /6 = divisible by /3 and even number /8 = last three digits are divisible by 8. /9 = digits recursively add up to 9. /12 = divisible by /3 and last two digits are divisible by 4.
If you're a coder, memorize your powers of two: 2, 4, 8, 16, 32, 64, 128, 256, 512, 1024, 2048, 4096, 8192, 16384, 32768, 65536, 131072, 262144, 524288, 1048576 (1mb).
I'm sure there's tons more I can think of that I use on a daily basis just to get by :) - Fireinthedisco, on 10/11/2007, -5/+25or you know.... you could sit next to the asian kid
- EarlOfLade, on 10/11/2007, -0/+20X.5^2 can easily be found by doing X * X+1 +.25
2.5^2 = 2 * 3 +.25 = 6.25
11.5^2 = 11*12 +.25 = 132.25 - inhibit0r, on 10/11/2007, -1/+15Those are sum basic tips.
- AceLy, on 10/11/2007, -5/+15Who didn't use these in middle school? Pathetic.
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -0/+9Americans suffer here because they have never seen the absolutely wonderful British TV show called Countdown. Part of the game involves contestants having to do mental arithmetic problems for points. It's my favourite part :) Check out this video:
http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=-VPwL9tbZ80&mode=related&search= - Spiffypants, on 10/11/2007, -1/+10Most people should have figured these out on their own by the time they finished high school.
- whiteboy, on 10/11/2007, -0/+8A nice rule of thumb for tips is to multiply the tax by 3. At least that's how I do it since tax in my area is 6%.
- whiteboy, on 10/11/2007, -3/+10Since everything on the internet is targeted only to Americans.
- deathguppie, on 10/11/2007, -0/+7another great tip..
Divide 2 by eight, then round off 2476 by a factor divisible by nine.. then multiply that result by the power of 7 write your answer on a piece of paper.. invest exactly that amount of money in some random Chinese IPO and then subtract that from the yearly federal tax revenue. ..
... and voila, you now know the new federal deficit calculation method used by the Bush administration to calculate the national deficit.. =) - Onyxblaze, on 10/11/2007, -0/+7I would say you are committing blogspam. I wouldn't have even noticed their site unless you had mentioned that it was spam. Also, it is rude to double post. you idiot.
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -1/+8Where do you live? I've always grown up with the 15% rule of thumb, and a number of people my age work at restaurants and they make at least twice that.
- Onyxblaze, on 10/11/2007, -0/+7I would say you are committing blogspam. I wouldn't have even noticed their site unless you had mentioned that it was spam. Also, it is rude to double post.
- Onyxblaze, on 10/11/2007, -0/+6You do realize that many waitresses nowadays don't even see half of their tips?
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -9/+15zohar you're a ***** moron
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -1/+7Pretty basic, but helpful nonetheless. Many of you may say "too basic, I already know this" - but the average person can't do math on the fly. Many do not understand that a fundamental principle of arithmetic, hell, even higher levels of math, is to be able to write something as something else. My first year of HS physics was just making things equal one another.
People struggle calculating 15% tips. My trick is to just take 10% and add it to 5% - just take 1/10th of the bill, cut that number in half, add the two together and there's your tip!
Another one is being able to calculate Celsius to Fahrenheit on the fly - just double the temperature in C, subtract one-fifth of the original temperature, and add 32 - voila! (Derived from F = [(9/5)C] + 32, bonus points if you can figure out how to get that). - supyonamesjosh, on 10/11/2007, -1/+6If a train left Boston at 4:30 traveling at 70 miles an hour...
- enervation, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4For 17.5% VAT in uk:
Work out 10%
halve it (5%)
halve it again (2.5%)
add the 3 and you have 17.5% - meatmcguffin, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4Can anyone explain why American shops don't add tax onto the price of goods until you have to pay for them?
Here in Britain and a lot of other countries, you pay what you see and i don't really understand why you would do it the more complicated way. Can someone clarify? - foobarf00, on 10/11/2007, -1/+5Yup, you're the one spamming.
- spinningobo, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4Not all states have sales tax. I'm pretty sure Oregon and Nevada don't, for example. The idea behind sales tax is that it is a much more uniform way taxing all the goods and you actually get to see how much tax you're paying when you buy something.
- spinningobo, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4Wow. $2.50? Here in California servers get our minimum wage... $7.50. And we still tip them 15% - 20%.
- h4mx0r, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4Started using these in middle school.
Well, except the omit words part. It just flows naturally, but I'll try that one next time. - inactive, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4That's a pretty good rule. 18% is a fair compromise between 20% and 15%
- hiPpymIck, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3http://manners.qdnow.com/2006/11/26/tips-on-tips.aspx
this is quite informative podcast
eg
"You may find that the quality of service becomes linked to the generosity of your tip in establishments you frequent, so certainly remember to be as generous (if not more so) in places where you are a regular." - anogenic, on 10/11/2007, -1/+4"50% -> Divide the number by 2"
DUH! - wilshire1, on 10/11/2007, -15/+18If you don't already know these by the time you're on digg, you shouldn't be doing math.
- actual, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3You know how i figure out a tip? Where I live the sales tax is 8.25%. Just look at the tax, double it, and you've got 16.5%, round up to the nearest dollar and you got it.
- colsandurz45, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3ok here's a tip that's not really basic
square any number, 0-99, in your head
let's try 78^2
78^2 = (70+8)^2 = 70^2+8^2+2*70*8 = 4900 + 64 + 7*8*2*10 = 4964 + 56*2*10 = 4964 + 1120 = 6084
this one is pretty hard, but with practice you can probably do this one in 30-45 seconds - inactive, on 10/11/2007, -1/+4I don't know, I've always found (600 x 3) 1800 + (10 x 3) 30 + (3 x 3) 9 = 1839 to be quick.
- ps3udov3ctor, on 10/11/2007, -2/+5this made it to the front page? I find it hard that to believe that someone took the time to write that lame list out.
- goatspanka, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3I see you use that system too! I only multiply the tax by 2 and adjust that total by the quality of service received, but our tax rate is 10%. People that scream you should TIP 20% regardless of service are ***** morons.
- kablaaamo, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3I'm pretty sure it's illegal to only pay $2.50 an hour. Tips are above and beyond minimum wage (at least) and seriously, report your employer and find another job if yours is different.
- zepolen, on 10/11/2007, -3/+6Easy way to figure out a (19%) VAT tax for my country: Divide by 5 and remove 1 percent
Eg. 35 euros...
20% = 35/5 = 7
1% = 0.35
20% - 1% = 6.65 euros - meatmcguffin, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3Ah, i guess you don't need that sort of system when the tax doesn't vary across the entire country. Thanks!
- TrevorBelmont, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2What, all other nations implant math coprocessors in their babies heads? Screw you Pal.
- justinjacobs, on 10/11/2007, -1/+3A SWAT team would determine it to be a terrorist device?
- alsundma, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RRxRKXbT4rU&mode=related&search=
- Mothrog, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2Tips are there to ensure proper service. You aren't entitled to a given percentage of the bill, you earn it. If you don't like that, find another job.
- MrSidnet, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2If they are relying on tips to "get by" then they need to find a new line of work.
I've worked in a kitchen before, and I love the tip money, but if I wasnt making enough money doing that, then I should have been looking elsewhere. - TrevorBelmont, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2Nonsense. more devisive red/blue state nonsense. If you identify yourself as a "Digger" I pity you. I like news and funny stories, it doesn't define who I am.
Seriously. - owlfeathers, on 10/11/2007, -1/+3I see what you did there.
- jarbarf, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2lol
- polymorphist, on 10/11/2007, -0/+278^3 = (70+8)^3 = 70^3 + 3*70^2*8 + 3*70*8^2+8^3 = %#$^$@%$
This doesn't help much, man...you still have to do a heck of lot calculation in your head. - jabelar, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2I think the main thing many people don't realize is that math in your head is usually done differently than on paper. I think the average person gets stuck trying to visualize what they would do on paper, rather than taking advantage of grouping, distributive principle, etc.
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2Meatmcguffin: Some stores in the US do 'embed' taxes into the price, but it is generally uncommon.
- smokestack, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2I've used nothing but shortcuts of my own mental invention since school, never bothered memorizing alot of formulas and such, just could naturally reduce the needed steps quickly in my head... which lead to me doing very poorly in school when asked to "show my work", even though I nearly always answered correctly.. The way math is taught in schools now seems to just cater to the lowest common denomonator, memorizing rules, etc. ... math for those who can't do math.. and if you really have the ability but don't change your thinking for them you're screwed..
Luckily, I'm far out of school now, and alot of people will actually use some very flattering words when I pop out an answer long before they can with a calculator.. I just explain it's nothing so great, I just have a "method"..
what I have a hard time with is being able to share that method in words, I've tried with my son, with a little success, but some things just work out in my head only after all this time I guess.. -
