Its part of the "snowball earth" theory, in that at one point in our past was the earth completely covered with ice. Where as most ice ages normally do not reach the equator, this covered the planet. Their evidence was in the form of glacier stones, that they found near the Caribbeans, rocks that geologically had no reason to be there because they didn't resemble any other rocks in the area .
How did these rocks travel? Massive glaciers, slowly moving over a period of thousands of years. How did glaciers manage to travel so far south? Why the earth was covered in ice. How? Perhaps a massive volcano blanketed the freaking sky and caused temperatures to drop (as mentioned in the story above).

- nullcodes, on 07/09/2009, -0/+6What's the actual age of the youngest set of fossils found on a mountain? You suddenly believe carbon dating? Fidning a "one off" fossil could have many explanationd (anythign for a bird to a tornado or even a man could have brought it up the mountain)
And how old is that mountain (it only takes a few million years for a mountain to get to 10km high) at a few mllimeters a year growth rate.
Furthermore there are literally mountains of evidence that the Earth took millions of years to form. And what about all the craters on the moon .. how did it get so pockmarked in 3 to 6000 years?
With even a tiny telescpe I can see more than 6000 craters .. yet nobody has ever witnessed a large crater being formed (except maybe Giordani Bruno) but the cratering rate has to be far more than that.
Why has God left so much evidence for the Earth being millions of years old? - nitsuj, on 07/09/2009, -0/+5Noah's Ark and the global flood are a myth.
The boat is an engineering impossibility. That it was built by a handful of people is an impossibility.
Getting a world full of animals in pairs and sevens is an impossibility. Less animals than today? Then you rely on hyper-rapid evolution which is also impossible given the short time span (several thousand years).
The zoological ramifications of animal care on the boat is an impossibility.
A global flood would totally decimate sea and fresh water life including both plants and animals, destroying food chains and leading to catastrophic extinction. All land plants would also be destroyed and made extinct.
Dispatching all surviving animals back to their natural habitats, which would have been decimated BTW, by a handful of humans is an impossibility.
Without a surviving natural environment, the animals would all perish.
Additionally:
There is no geological evidence for a global flood. Fossils are found on top of mountains because of plate tectonic movement and known, empirically measured, methods of mountain formation. The Earth's crust is in constant churn albeit slowly by human time scales. But not by geological time scales.

Ummm, have you ever read, listen about, or studied the mid-oceanic ridge system? Because it sure as hell isn't water coming out of those ridges, but MAGMA from the mantle of the Earth.
"The great volume of water this early in the flood event could only come from massive undersea "fountains" beginning to breech the crust all along the mid-oceanic ridge system."
You really, really, really don't understand the basics of geology, buoyancy, or physics.
1. Large enough bodies of water can not exist under the continental plates, simply due to buoyancy. Water is less dense than rock, so it will automatically rise above it the instant it has a chance, which would have occurred almost instantly due to:
2. ... the basics of geology. Bodies of water large enough to flood the earth in line with the biblical account would be subjected to tidal forces, just like the rest of the Earth. Any chambers of water below the surface would be subjected to tidal forces, which would swiftly crack and break open the chambers in a matter of days if not hours. Then just the simple pressure from the water being buried underneath would cause the water in the chambers to rapidly (aka, at several thousand mph) charge to the surface, but that leads us to the physics problem.
3. This is shamelessly stolen from ApokalyseNow: Lets look at some basic physics. Even only one mile deep, the temperature under the surface is above the boiling point of water, so any water released from a subterranean source in sufficient quantity to cover the earth's surface would be in the form of steam. Do you know how much heat water releases when it turns from vapor to liquid? 1g of steam condenses to 1g of water plus 2261 joules. A cubic meter of water is a million grams and the surface of the earth is 5.09*10^8 square km (or 5.09*10^14 m^2). If we drop a measly 1 meter of water per day on the planet (a rate of 1.63 inches per hour) from a subterranean source, we're releasing 2261 joules/g * 1,000,000g/m^3 * 5.09*10^14 m^2 = 1.15 * 10^24 joules of energy per day. In a more convenient measuring scale, we're talking 249,300,000 megatonnes of energy per day.
Put another way, for every m of water level increase, we have to release 2.261 billion joules per square meter. At a rate of 1 meter per day, this comes to 2.261 billion joules per day per square meter, or a radiance of 26 kilowatts per square meter, roughly 20 times the brightness of the sun. As a result, the atmosphere rapidly turns into incandescent plasma, incinerating Noah, ark, animals, and a fair chunk of the planet's surface. Nothing survives.

- kelly, on 07/09/2009, -6/+1Forgive me, I meant to say geyser when I said hot spring. Though theoretically similar many people thing of a hot pool of water when they think of a hot spring rather than a burst of water.
Genesis 7:11 says
"In the six hundredth year of Noah's life, in the second month, the seventeenth day of the month, the same day were all the fountains of the great deep broken up, and the windows of heaven were opened. And the rain was upon the earth forty days and forty nights."
(Gen 7:11-12 KJV)
There was also a similar form of geyser activity on a massive, world-wide scale, concentrated along the mid-oceanic ridge system. A careful reading of Genesis 7:6-10 seems to indicate that the flood waters were already rising for about seven days before the fountains "were broken up" (verse: 11).
"And Noah was six hundred years old when the flood of waters was upon the earth. And Noah went in, and his sons, and his wife, and his sons' wives with him, into the ark, because of the waters of the flood. Of clean beasts, and of beasts that are not clean, and of fowls, and of every thing that creepeth upon the earth, There went in two and two unto Noah into the ark, the male and the female, as God had commanded Noah. And it came to pass after seven days, that the waters of the flood were upon the earth. In the six hundredth year of Noah's life, in the second month, the seventeenth day of the month, the same day were all the fountains of the great deep broken up, and the windows of heaven were opened. And the rain was upon the earth forty days and forty nights."
(Genesis 7:6-12 KJV)
Careful parsing of the above passage indicates that great amounts of water were already being added to the Earth's seas at least seven days before the rains even began. This means that sea level was already rapidly rising, flooding low lying coastal areas and sending panicked low-land inhabitants inland from the rising seas. Meanwhile, presumably up on much higher ground, Noah and his family took shelter on the Ark and waited, while the massive gopher wood vessel remained firmly nested in its construction frame, unmovable and secure until the rising waters lifted it from its resting place.
The great volume of water this early in the flood event could only come from massive undersea "fountains" beginning to breech the crust all along the mid-oceanic ridge system. But this preliminary in-flow was still insufficient to breech the ocean's surface. The volume of underwater displacement would, however, be sufficient enough to generate global tsunami (tidal waves) activity, quickly drowning inhabitants who lived near the seas.

http://www.kjvbible.org/geysers.html - kelly, on 07/08/2009, -7/+1Actually the fossils and sediment I mentioned in the parent post were dated as being relatively new.
Even still, that does not explain the varying layers of "strange" elements comprised of rocks, mud, the remains of any vegetation and animal remains which don't follow the historical guidelines assumed to be true by evolutionary biologists.
Thus far, they really don't have a solid theory to explain it. Well, at least they don't have one that doesn't reinforce Biblical history as the Bible says that massive hot springs burst open all over the earth at the same time during the beginning of what resulted in the Biblical account of the global flood. This (combined with flood waters) would have caused the "impossible" anomaly which has proven to be so problematic to these evolutionary biologists. - kelly, on 07/08/2009, -8/+2It's important to understand why Scientists have to suggest something like snowball earth theory in the first place.
In one of the layers known as the "Paleoloic", scientists found what they regard to be a strange series of layers underneath all the fossils that are comprised of rocks, mud, the remains of any vegetation and also inevitably all biological life that would have been on the earth. Thus far, they really don't have a solid theory to explain it. Well, at least they don't have one that doesn't reinforce Biblical history as the Bible says that massive hot springs burst open all over the earth at the same time during the beginning of what resulted in the Biblical account of the global flood. This (combined with flood waters) would have caused the impossible anomaly which has proven to be so problematic to evolutionary biologists. - kelly, on 07/08/2009, -11/+2The problem with this theory is that it reinforces snowball earth theory. This theory is exceptionally controversial although it is the prevailing theory to explain things in the geologic column which are make evolution impossible. Unfortunately, snowball earth theory itself is impossible in and of itself!
It suggests that the earth was at one time entirely covered by ice during parts of the Cryogenian period, from 790 to 630 million years ago. It's considered controversial because scientists know that the conglomeration of rock which ultimately makes up this layer can only be the result of warm water activity. This is a perfect example of scientists seeking out evidence for predefined theories which the scientific community is so often guilty of.
Scientists occasionally discover very young fossils of aquatic life on the tops of mountains yet these discoveries rarely are talked about. This is an impossibility if evolution is to be believed. Fish should be in oceans, definitely not on top of a mountain. Similarly, There is also relatively young sediment on mountaintops. Sediment is rock laid down in water. Three-fourths of Earth is composed of sedimentary rock.
This statistic implies that the world must have been covered with water at some time. For sediment to be deposited on mountains, the mountains would have been under water and because these fossils and sediment is so young, it would not have happened within the evolutionary time period or even within the time for the mountains themselves to form from a time when they would have been previously been under water.
The Fossils have also been well preserved. The top parts are just as well preserved as the bottom parts. For this to occur, sediment has to be deposited in a short amount of time.
The most logical means for all this to happen as fossils are found on top of mountains all over the world is by a global flood, yet it's very telling that scientists seem only willing to consider any theory that doesn't include a global flood. Could this because it reinforces Biblical history? If so, it certainly wouldn't be the first time.
This wikipedia article goes in greater depth as to why the snowball earth theory is controversial.
