- zoltamatron, on 12/17/2008, -0/+35Holy crap...this map is telling us not to live in the desert.
- spritom, on 12/17/2008, -1/+26Since I'm not on the web with a PDA, is it possible they could have an image that's slightly larger? It makes the fine print a bit...uh....fine.
- Stuart750, on 12/18/2008, -0/+24Dugg for title: DEATH MAP!
- Ma1achi, on 12/17/2008, -20/+40can't help but notice that the blue states are... well... blue!
if there is a god, he's undoubtedly punishing his misguided, racist, hate-filled followers. - altgeeky1, on 12/18/2008, -4/+18god just hates Country music.
- Gryffydd, on 12/18/2008, -1/+12Who's hate filled again?
- kvgirard, on 12/18/2008, -0/+11Death Map USA: People Die More Often in Dangerous Areas
- bnut, on 12/18/2008, -4/+14Way to overgeneralize the southern population.
- walkable, on 12/18/2008, -0/+8You can make sure you don't freeze to death or die of heatstroke in Chicago, but a lot of elderly or poor people can't. This study probably is as much to do with income levels as natural disasters.
- Kerr, on 12/18/2008, -0/+8Looks like Iowa is the best place to live when it comes to deaths from natural disasters. So much for the movie Twister.
- sanguinekane, on 12/18/2008, -0/+7Why should California be higher? Earthquakes are a lot less deadly per unit than hurricanes, tornadoes etc. Even when a big one hits, they actually don't kill that many people. Plus, most new buildings in CA are designed with earthquakes in mind, making them safer.
- jgubbe, on 12/18/2008, -0/+6Takes a second to load, PDF but it has much more info if you scroll through the 31 pages with all kinds of visual stats. Original link.
http://www.ij-healthgeographics.com/content/pdf/14 ... - spyd3rweb, on 12/18/2008, -1/+7Here's an map of local morans if you were looking to stay away from idiots http://www.newscientist.com/data/images/ns/cms/dn1 ...
- allenthar, on 12/18/2008, -0/+6If this map was of Australia, the entire thing would be bright red.
- yurishoujo, on 12/18/2008, -0/+5Hmm.... I wonder though, do they count car accidents from crappy driving conditions during blizzards and winter weather related deaths? That would make the stats for the midwest go up.
- doublefelix, on 12/18/2008, -0/+5That solitary red square in WA State is right over Mount St Helens, though I think you'd be pretty safe coming back now.
- DatDudeWiggs, on 12/18/2008, -1/+6F you man. Two of my best friends died in Iowa from a twister.
- antoniuk, on 12/18/2008, -0/+5Wow you can not be that stupid. Red is bad ok? More red in Utah and Arizona than anywhere else. Guess what most of Arizona and Utah are made of? Two guess and mormon ***** does not count.
- DNABeast, on 12/18/2008, -3/+8If you were used to massive unstoppable forces thundering into your area, you'd probably want to believe that there was a giant magician looking out for you too.
- Rain12913, on 12/18/2008, -0/+4Glad to live in eastern Mass!
- androothebear, on 12/18/2008, -0/+4Finally good news for Michigan...
- jcaino, on 12/18/2008, -0/+4Yay Pittsburgh!
- Projektorboy, on 12/18/2008, -0/+4I find it amusing that the bulk of heat-related deaths aren't anywhere near Phoenix, AZ - home of the 115F summer. I guess the local phrase "but it's a dry heat" applies here. The humidity in the south is apparently what really kills.
- rajkalex, on 12/18/2008, -3/+7As seemingly ignorant as this comment may be, there is some truth to what he is saying. There seems to be a direct correspondence to a political map. Oklahoma, arguably the most conservative state, is all red. California is mostly blue. Plenty of exceptions of course but it would be interesting to see if there is some correlation.
- Ac1dburn, on 12/17/2008, -2/+6I would have though California would be higher. Pretty interesting though
- KragTheDigger, on 12/18/2008, -0/+4Now.. cross reference that map with the average cost of residential property per square foot... warning: there's a 10% chance your brain will implode.
- sanguinekane, on 12/18/2008, -0/+4Well obviously what you think doesn't jive with reality. Earthquakes happen, and they can and do kill people and cause a lot of property damage. But on the whole they are a lot less destructive than hurricanes or tornadoes. Buildings can be built of re-enforced to be able to better withstand earthquakes and reduce casualties. 1906 was a lesson well learned in California, and most of the damage was caused by a fire anyway, not the quake itself.
- inactive, on 12/18/2008, -0/+4bayarea FTW!
- dhughes, on 12/18/2008, -0/+4I'll take the desert over -30C with 100km/h winds (windchill of -60C) ice, snow, blowing snow, freezing rain and power outages aka "winter" in most of Canada.
- Cattywampus, on 12/18/2008, -0/+3Safest place to live in the U.S. is probably one of those underground bunkers Dick Cheney has been holing up in the last 8 years.
- iJessicaRabbit, on 12/18/2008, -0/+3(Chicago as well) Those wildfires and monsoons can really be crazy here. I'm assuming the number is so high becuase of how dense the population is and how many people can't keep themselves warm/hot in the intense weather swings.
- Doritos, on 12/18/2008, -0/+3Seems more like the midwest/rocky mountains-ish area is more dangerous than the rest of the south.
- saliment, on 12/18/2008, -0/+3I think San Francisco is very dangerous. Read this book: A Crack in the Edge of the World: America and the Great California Earthquake of 1906.
They should have never built a city there! I don't care what Starship says. - D3koy, on 12/18/2008, -0/+3Generally hurricanes don't do a lot of killing. Mostly property damage...Anything real bad scares most people away, otherwise it's just wind and rain. Katrina is an obvious exception, but in general my statement is correct.
- Ma1achi, on 12/19/2008, -0/+3you're using scientific method when talking about GOD.
Who needs to go back to school? - iJessicaRabbit, on 12/18/2008, -0/+3I'm surprised coastal areas that hurricanes tend to hit are not higher
- gilbes, on 12/18/2008, -0/+3This really starts to confirm my suspicion, upper midwesterners are the toughest people in the USA.
Least likley to die of weather, yet the upper midwest has some of the worst weather for any time of year. The summers are hot and humid. The winters are colder than anywhere else in the contintental states. Yet it doesn't kill us.
People from other parts of the US say upper midwesterners are nicer than the rest of the country. It's not that they are nice, it's that they truley do not care for your petty *****. -10 below with 2 feet of snow falling the night before and everyone shows up to work on time. No bitching, no complaing, no whining. It is business as usual. 1/4" of snow falls in Atlanta and the roads become a death trap for thousands. - lowdose, on 12/18/2008, -0/+3It looks kinda like one of those election maps...
- ShadowofAres, on 12/18/2008, -0/+3My tongue is telling us not to live in the desert.
- Cattywampus, on 12/18/2008, -3/+6"if there is a god, he's undoubtedly punishing his misguided, racist, hate-filled followers."
Yeah, I'm sure that's it. He probably reads Huffington Post, too, and had Obama chosen on HIs "Digg the Candidates" section (He's a Digg user, of course). - aguita, on 12/18/2008, -0/+3No Hawaii or Alaska? Lame map.
- junkneo, on 12/18/2008, -0/+2Death map of the country - Only in America.
- ThatsNotPudding, on 12/18/2008, -0/+2Image 3 of 4: Local Moran's?????
- salzstangen, on 12/19/2008, -0/+2or install the Firefox add-on 'Image Zoom'.
- roijen, on 12/18/2008, -0/+2Wouldn't it just be white?
- mchrisco, on 12/18/2008, -0/+2Need to adjust based on possibilies of events that havent happened but could, like..
Nuclear plant accidents, the yellow stone super volcano and ash dispersal, etc.
As well as earthquakes, mud slides, fires, cause a non CA person wouldnt have as much risk of that as a CA person and that doesnt look like it shows up. - christianw, on 12/19/2008, -0/+2is that why it costs so ***** much to live here? >.<
- Ma1achi, on 12/19/2008, -0/+2tongue in cheek anybody? sorry to those I offended.
Except Fart cloud, he's just a dick, and his name is FART CLOUD. Which, while I find hilarious, I have trouble taking seriously. - pauldy, on 12/18/2008, -0/+2Finally scientific research into why people from the South are so tough apparently only the strong survive down there.
- bosoxrock, on 12/18/2008, -0/+2"The South will rise again" must refer to global warming.
