- KMFDM781, on 11/13/2008, -2/+27It's only a matter of time before human beings are integrated with biological computer technology.
- CaptCarrot, on 11/13/2008, -2/+24Make way for Skynet!
- mhmandthen, on 11/13/2008, -0/+16Posthumanism here we come!
- CaptCarrot, on 11/13/2008, -0/+15Sacrificing humanity for the sake of creating a hot 17 year old robot chick. :)
- leif777, on 11/13/2008, -0/+14Holy William Gibson!
- DekarCorvus, on 11/13/2008, -0/+14i wanna be a cyborg...that would be badass...
- EntropyMan, on 11/13/2008, -0/+13I never quite understood how a Cylon could plug an optical cable into her forearm and still not be distinguishable from a human. Now I do. Thanks, NewScientist!
- inactive, on 11/13/2008, -1/+13Then you could ACTUALLY delete someone. Good virus protection software would be beyond significant. lol
- oneoverzero, on 11/13/2008, -0/+9Light is... faster than electricity...
That's why it's better.
Despite the fact that Light-based circuits are weird and confusing and possibly don't exist yet, they're theoretically possible, and this paves the way for their practical application. - bitbytebit, on 11/13/2008, -0/+9My uncle was researching optical comps about 25 years ago, the stumbling block for the tech was the connection point, the connectors themselves where the bundles would come together were just so large that to create a computer that used thousands was impractical.
This is the breakthrough they needed then, oh well at least our children will have fast comps. - Millsee, on 11/13/2008, -1/+10Now that's what I call a life-line.
www.instantrimshot.com - inactive, on 11/13/2008, -0/+9It'll be pretty damned cool up until we're doomed.
- grampajoe, on 11/13/2008, -1/+9That's actually pretty creepy.
- uptwolait, on 11/13/2008, -0/+8...or computers are integrated with human consciousness.
- sparsely, on 11/13/2008, -0/+8Artificial photosynthesis! Science is awesome.
- c010rb1indusa, on 11/13/2008, -0/+7I'm not sure exactly what the possibilities of this are, but it sounds badass
- TVarmy, on 11/13/2008, -0/+7A little, but if you think about it, DNA's just another material. In this case, it's being used to build information cables. In biology, it's used to store a lot of information in a small amount of space, including the genes that make up our bodies, which emotionally gives us a lofty opinion of it.
What I think would be cool is if the cable could be self-repairing. The article isn't entirely clear on how it works, and it seems the scientists don't completely know either. Perhaps it could be laid underwater in a pressurized tube of saline and sugars, and some extremeophile (cold and pressure resistant) bacteria or viruses could patch together breaks in the DNA as they happen.
This might also be the way we build computers in the future, since they'd enable very small traces on the circuit board and light speed transfer which would clear up some of the latency issues over copper/gold conductivity some people think may cause Moore's law to collapse. Perhaps Asimov was right when he predicted that robots/computers of the future would have wet, porous brains rather than being metal and silicon, since this seems like a step in that direction. - firealarmist, on 11/13/2008, -0/+7Ghost in the Shell, anyone?
- DiggityDugged, on 11/13/2008, -0/+6"Soylent Linux! It's madefrom . . . HUMANS!!!"
- Janizzary, on 11/13/2008, -0/+6I can't wait. The next major step in human evolution. Take it away, Ray.
- TheZorch, on 11/13/2008, -0/+6We're only a few generations away from being the Borg. Holy ***** Roddenberry was right!!!
- Murdats, on 11/13/2008, -0/+6people manage fine with a tube in their throat, we would just do something like add an extra utility for 'machine food' for all our new biological technology, like gas and electricity are done now
- eatsushi, on 11/13/2008, -1/+6you can like, totally have sex with your computer now...
- Harabeck, on 11/13/2008, -0/+5Digg you up? No. We realize theyre both EM, but the point is, they are very different, electricity being specifically propogated across electrons as opposed to photons, and operating on very different wavelengths and therefore energy levels. They have very different properties, so the distinction is relevant.
- leif777, on 11/13/2008, -0/+4maybe we already are.................
- lovestospooge, on 11/13/2008, -0/+3Neural grafting
- LogicBomB, on 11/13/2008, -0/+3I wish I could say the same about your reply.
- 8bitflu, on 11/13/2008, -3/+5Mine is on your mothers face.
- MyTakes, on 11/13/2008, -0/+2So now I can sell my DNA for money and not worry about legal matters? Life's good.
- linagee, on 11/13/2008, -0/+2I've got your DNA sample right here.
- VitriolAndAngst, on 11/13/2008, -1/+3Sounds like it would be good in computer interconnects -- but not so much for large data transfers.
The only Issue I see, is having to "feed" a future computer new chromosphores and sum sort of sugar to power the proteins -- at a guess. Most people can't even keep a goldfish alive. - CeeJayDK, on 11/13/2008, -0/+2Luminous beings are we, not this crude matter.
- inactive, on 11/13/2008, -0/+2I'm still waiting on Jurassic Park.
- oneoverzero, on 11/13/2008, -0/+2Amino acids to replace proteins would make more sense than a sugar... Unless the whole computer becomes essentially a living thing, in which case it would need sugar so its artificial mitochondria like units could make atp to power the proteins...
- Zaxcomp, on 11/13/2008, -0/+2That's all I think of when I see someone with a bluetooth headset and an iPhone. We are just a few minor steps away from becoming the cyborgs of science fiction.
- CalmLlama, on 11/13/2008, -0/+2It would need to be a lot more efficient before it would be a viable technology, but it sounds neat.
- erichh, on 11/14/2008, -0/+2This comment has been found to be in breach of our terms of use and has been removed.
- allicat83, on 11/14/2008, -0/+2sounds like a good shot! Mine usually gets in her hair... or on the wall, car seat, etc.

- inactive, on 11/14/2008, -0/+2Give everyone an endotracheal tube, total parenteral nutrition, and a Foley catheter, and you're set.
- Harabeck, on 11/13/2008, -0/+2No, electricity specifically means the energy associated with the movement of charged particals, which is definately not light.

- Pritchard, on 11/14/2008, -0/+2Is it odd that I read KMFD's statement in a low, raspy voice? Like how the tech thrillers always are...
- mhmandthen, on 11/13/2008, -1/+2Then you weren't very smart 15 years ago, were you?

Thank you for the nightmares.... - JohnLawson, on 11/13/2008, -1/+2"Humans are no longer born. They are grown."
I understand that isn't what this topic is about... but it reminded me of the matrix, none the less. =) -
