- camintmier, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I have Crohn's disease, and I really hope that since a cause is possibly known now, a way to prevent it from happening will be figured out.
- BritOverseas, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1My sis in law has it too, hopefully this is true.
- RiotActing, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Mike McCready of Pearl Jam has it too, he raises alot of money for research...
- citrusfizz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1my sister has crohn's very sad when it acts up for her
- crashingechelon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1This is a good digg, a friend of mine has Crohn's disease and it would be nice to help find a cure.
- bartclan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I've got ulcerative colitis--ulcers are only in the colon as opposed to both the large and small intenstines. I can't wait for a cure for both to be found.
- jerenity, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1If you have Crohn's disease or know someone that does, you know there is no "one-size-fits-all" diet. You eat what you can, and don't eat what makes you feel like crap.
- jrooks, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1My deepest sympathies to all of you that have Crohn's. A very close friend of mine has it.
- algorythm, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Good read. I have Crohn's as well and have not heard much progress on any cure lately. I am glad researchers have not forgotten about us Crohnies
- Viremia, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0It's a piece to the whole puzzle. There are too many other indicators that do not correlate with these findings to suggest that this is really IT. Without reading the manuscript it's hard to determine how well the research was conducted and how thorough the researchers were, but the fact it was accepted in Lancet is a positive sign.
- Tmacman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Sorry for the duplicate post, I checked, and the first didn't go through after 5 mins. It's this crappy satellite internet, it lags like a MF. BTW, can you edit or delete posts on Digg?
- arkive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I have Crohn's too, so this is an automatic digg for me
- uthaman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Glad to hear about progress being made on this diease! My dad has it and goes thru some pretty rough times. Viagra as a "cure". Who woulda thunk... My 74 year old dad is going to be happy! Ugh, that thought scares me... :)
- ejunker, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0>My friend has UC and she's exactly the same way. She never gets sick. Anyone else with IBD notice >that or is it just me?
I am Crohn's and I also never get sick. So maybe people with Crohn's are good at keeping the bacteria out of their bodies but if they do get in the body it doesn't repond as well as it should. - jerenity, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1nice, i may *have* to take viagra in the future...
- JemmStar, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0If you have Crohn's disease please consider researching MAP (Mycobacterium avium subspecies paratuberculosis) at http://www.paratuberculosis.net/ and http://www.crohns.org/.
I've had Crohn's for 25 years and beside Steroids nothing has been able to control the disease. In January 2004 after a particularly bad bout of illness and after doing a huge amount of research I decided to try the MAP remedy. For six months I took two very powerful antibiotics and removed all dairy from my diet. They were a rough six months but well worth it in my eyes. In April I stopped taking all other Crohn's meds and have not needed any since then. What a joy to be symptom and more importantly medicaition free.
I can only speak for myself and realize that this is anecdotal. Do your own research and discuss it with you GI.
Basically MAP is a form of bacteria that is common in dairy herds which causes them to develop Johne's disease. Johne's is very similar to Crohn's in humans, in fact it was believed that MAP was the cause of Crohne's but was ruled out when scientists could not find evidence of MAP in humans. With improved techniques they are now able to culture MAP and are finding it in abundance in our diary supply most notably where factory farming is prevelant. In cultures where they consume very little milk or where they boil their milk like in India, the incidence of Crohn's is very very low. In places like Wisconsin and Alberta where factory farming is common, the incidence of Crohn's and MAP is tremendous.
Once you do the research and realize what is in milk, you will probably never want to drink it again even if you do not have Crohn's.
Feel free to message me if you have any questions - knueven7, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I was diagnosed with Crohn's a few years back and have since really started to pay attention to my eating habits and my overall health in general. One thing I have noticed is that my skin does not heal nearly as quickly as it used to. It was interesting to read the study's results sort of back that up. Another thing that I have noticed that seems to conflict with the study is that I never get sick. If I had a lowered immune response you would think I would be sick more often, especially working in a germ infected school. My friend has UC and she's exactly the same way. She never gets sick. Anyone else with IBD notice that or is it just me?
- Billistic, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Alright, now they just cure psoriasis and I'm allllll set.
- TrevorBradley, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0It takes this story to make me register for digg.
I have Crohn's as well. At this point any kind of news about mechanism for the disease is good news. I've been on Remicade for the past 6 years and while it's worked well for me it's effectiveness is finally wearing off. Hopefully this will lead to a new class of drugs 4-5 years down the road that might be a lot more effective.
Thanks digg et al for pointing this article out to us. Sounds like many of us either have or know someone with Crohn's. - RobotCitizen, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Fascinating news. Like the article says, this totally flies in the face of established understanding that says Crohn's is an autoimmune disorder. People with Crohn's are treated with immune suppressing drugs. I'll be interested to see how this affects recommended treatments.
(Damn captcha!) - Tmacman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Even though there's much work to be done on this, this gives a plausible and unique perspective on this disease. It is clearly a new way of looking at the Crohns, much like peptic ulcer disease, where 20 years ago nobody would have believed that the ulcers were caused by an H pylori infection. A treatment based on this would be a terrific medical advancement since these patients lead miserable debilitating lives.
- 8ight, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0my sister in law has pretty much had it for years but has never been officially diagnosed. sad stuff. wish she and all that have it could live a normal life. such a pain in the ass (no pun)... okay, it was intended. hope it leads to something!
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I have Crohn's disease as well, and anything they can do to find a cure or at least prevent the symptoms from occuring would be very much appreciated, more than I can describe. I'm taking Asacol right now which seems to be working, albeit slowly. I let it go and it came back, now I'm paying the price dearly. Every day is torture and misery, especially when I go to the bathroom.
Dear God, help me. - jav1231, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0My Grandmother died from this when I was a teen. Very painful. She lived with it for many years. I'm glad to see they're on to it.
- yoohoo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0i have it, thus reading it is a great inspiration for me.
- coheedcollapse, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Doesn't Daryl from Glassjaw and Head Automatica have Crohns? I have no idea what effects it has on the body, but hopefully we can add another list of diseases the human race has cured. I'm going to check out the article now. :D
- atanguay, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I have to say, I had UC two years ago right about now...the winter time, and it was utter HELL. My doctors were pumping me full of Asacol that was making me sicker and telling me that diet has no effect on it, which I thought was total BS.
I got this book and found out that it was:
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0969276818/sr=8-2/qid=1140888553/ref=pd_bbs_2/002-8044541-2362467?%5Fencoding=UTF8
Breaking the Vicious Cycle: Intestinal Health Through Diet (Paperback)
I read it, and it makes TOTAL sense when they break it down for you. Then started following their diet and weening myself away from the drugs, and two years later I am completely and utterly cured. Not just a problem only here or there, but completely and utterly free of this horrid disorder. I don't really even think about it except to look back in horror at how steroids made me contemplate suicide, and all that stuff about how you can die any year and you've gotta live well...blah blah blah.
I cannot recommend this book enough. Doctors are just guides, and depending on who you see and where you go, sometimes they are bad guides. I mean hey, since I cured myself I'm not seeing them and giving them money. Keeping me on some drug and seeing me once a month is good for lots of people's pocketbooks...just not mine or my company's.
Once again, this is just my experience, your mileage may vary, see you local dealer for details, void where prohibited. Offer not available in Alaska, Hawaii, and Puerto Rico.
Oh, also...I don't have any affiliation with the author or Amazon or anything. Just thought I'd share my rather embarassing experience in the hopes that someone else might benefit. Digg - Oniadric, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I have Crohn's and I can still eat pretty much everything, fried food I tend to stay away from, but other than that, it's all good. I'd be really interested to see if they find not necessarily a cure, but at least a way of preventing it from happening. ^^
- noseeme, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Infliximab is ***** EXPENSIVE, and corticosteroids messed me up really badly a few years ago. I'm still recovering from things that resulted from a 40 mg daily dose of prednisone.
I'm happy to hear scientific news about Crohn's. This reminds me, it's time for me to cut a check to the CCFA...
Thank god I'm using a Linux based OS instead of Windows, that is 100 or so dollars that can go to curing diseases that afflict millions of people. :)
You can donate to! Do it for me, and these other digg users! :)

http://www.ccfa.org/ - jpfinch, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I too have Crohn's and am hopeful to see a cure in my lifetime. I have also thought it is one of the "hidden" diseases many people have or know some one who has but do not talk about it, obviously.
- manatee, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0ha...I should correct myself... the surgeon took 2ft of my intestines because of Chron's...not because of the appendectomy.
- iamjohngalt, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0My wife has Crohn's disease and this is a + news. Hope they come out with a new effective medication soon
- manatee, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I've got Chron's...AND IT SUCKS! Mine seemed to start not too long after an appendectomy. The surgeon took out over 2ft of my large intestine. No one else in the family has had it. Who knows if they will ever find a cure...whoever "they" is. What the hell..perhaps I'll have to try some Viagra. ha! Couple things that have helped Chron's for me...
#1 - Body For Life diet (workout optional)... this made a huge difference... sucks eating healthy stuff...but this works...
http://www.bodyforlife.com
(basically...eat healthy and cut out all junk, fast food, etc.)
#2 - This stuff works well..
http://www.ganedenbiotech.com/index.php?page=DAIBD
Other than that...Chron's sucks! - paulryan21, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Good news - a mate of mine has this.
- samsite, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Digg, Any research in to this is welcome, i have bee a suffer with this for years and at times its crippling(quite litrly) with the autritus as well, Thanks to who ever linked this this is one of the most useful digs i have seen for a long time. Every one is different regarding these Chron's some have diets that work , some dot, Personally, I have to steer weal clear of caffeine?
- phantomcrux, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I've had crohns for about 3 years now, and it SUCKS! I'm on about 15 pills a day and Remicade. Any news is hopefully good news. I'm glad to see a story like this, b/c I feel that even though some people "know" about it, they really don't. A lot of other diseases out there are kind of mainstream and everyone talks about them, but since crohns can be kind of gross to talk about not many do.
I don't want to turn this into an advertisement, so i'll just give my email crohniecast(at)gmail(dot)com if you want info on what i'm doing, or just want to trade "war stories". I always seem to find that us crohnies are more open to talk about our disease with other crohnies, even if we don't know each other. - Bulova, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I've had Crohn's for 35 years. At one time I was down to 109 pd (I'm 5-9) and have had two bowel resections. Having Crohns is easily as much fun as hammering nails into your forehead.
A cure would not do much for me with all the scaring I've got, but it would be great for younger people, so they would not have to live the life I've had... - darkepic, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Very good news indeed. I had Colitis when I was 15, ended up needing to get my Colon removed. The closer we get to curing this the better. Nobody should have to suffer with the symptoms these disease's bring.
- RiotActing, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Everyone in the seattle area check this out

Mike McCready is playing a benefit show... - Bentis, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Had the disease for over 10 years, currently with a BMI of 15.8 :(
hopefully this can lead to some new treatments.
digg++; - j0c1f3r, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0my daughter was diagnosed with it at 2 yrs old, shes 10 now and doing alright. please god let us cure this.
- DrDigg, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0@Swift2 -
The basic idea is the loss of the immune response leads to "foreign substances ...bacteria and other organic debris can proliferate in the intestines. The body's response to this bacteria boom could secrete inflammatory molecules and thus bring on Crohn's disease." Interesting theory, but likely only part of the picture.
BTW just because one person responds to a diet does not mean that it is a miracle cure. Your point of reference is 1 (n=1). That is why there are randomized scientific trials to validate treatments. A medline search of crohn's and diet shows 970 studies. That is why you should talk to your Gastroenterologist before starting any significant diet. - DrDigg, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Please before you institute any major dietary change discuss it with you Gastroenterologist. I'm a GI fellow and have seen how bad Crohn's disease is, and I think any attention that we can get this disease the better it will be for everyone.
I think the best site for info is
http://www.ccfa.org/ - robusteza, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I'm really surprised that people who suffer from Crohn's liked the book "Patient, Heal Thyself". I spent 8 months in the hospital on an NG tube misdiagnosed with Crohn's (it was actually carcinoid syndrome but, that's beside the point). I found that book to be didactic and discouraging - reading stories about how personal fortitude and spiritual strength are all you need to beat the disease just seemed to imply that I was weak for not having made myself better yet. That, and the before and after photos terrified me. I found myself feeling like it was only a matter of time before I was emaciated and ravaged as well. Scary stuff.
- Disgruntled1, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0A new medication is well needed, I know first hand I have crohn's and have been labeled us "un-treatable" due to my allergy of medications and serious reactions to biological medications.
- designerjoe, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0My boyfriend just found out he has ulcerative colitis about a month ago. This is great news.
- knueven7, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Look into SCD I think you'll find more than one person who has had success with that diet. There's a mailing list and a message board. I would recommend all GI docs look into to these "alternative" treatments. Doesn't seem what you guys are currently doing is working. Maybe time to try something new.
- Disgruntled1, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Crohn's disease is slowly ruining the quality of my life. After 3 surgeries and countless medications (that I was either allergic to or sensitive to), I still suffer every day. Sad t think about it since my last surgery was only Jan. of this year. People that do not have this disease do not understand this comment..."If this is what I have to look forward to for the rest of my life, I don't want to live it" .
- Swift2, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I'm always glad to hear about progress on any disease, but I'm not sure how "a weak immune response" is not a disease of the auto-immune system. Isn't it just the reverse of many other conditions, where the immune system is too strong? Here, it's too weak.
