    I actually thought about doing the same thing a few years ago.

    Maybe it could be possible to do it with a very thin vertical white light strip instead of a laser, so that you could also encode the color information. It's hard or impossible to make white light rays perfectly parallel like a laser, but at this scale it wouldn't matter very much.
