- whoreable, on 04/21/2008, -0/+81What bearing does a federal US court have on a scientific experiment in Europe? Also why was the suit filed in Hawaii?
- ForumWales, on 04/21/2008, -0/+55There couldn't be a better way to get Wales noticed!!! :-) "The Welsh, destroyers of the universe!"
- archivist, on 04/21/2008, -6/+61...yeah almost 8,000 scientists at CERN don't know what they're doing. this stupidity needs to be stopped - all these people don't want the world to end as much as you do, they have family and friends too. stop hampering the progress of science.
and just so you know, i believe in god. - markwilcox, on 04/21/2008, -1/+39Let us hope he does not divide by zero.
- ultralights, on 04/21/2008, -8/+40americans and their ***** lawyers! halting progress and science yet again!
- bosssmiley, on 04/21/2008, -0/+31So...some idiot watched "Torchwood" and thought it was a documentary?
- ShagratOfMordor, on 04/21/2008, -0/+26Dr. Egon Spengler: [hesitates] We'll cross the streams.
Dr. Peter Venkman: 'Scuse me Egon? You said crossing the streams was bad!
Dr Ray Stantz: Cross the streams...
Dr. Peter Venkman: You're gonna endanger us, you're gonna endanger our client - the nice lady, who paid us in advance, before she became a dog...
Dr. Egon Spengler: Not necessarily. There's definitely a *very slim* chance we'll survive.
[pause while they consider this]
Dr. Peter Venkman: [slaps Ray] I love this plan! I'm excited to be a part of it! LET'S DO IT! - chillypacman, on 04/21/2008, -6/+31duh, the US owns the world.
- TheDiceMan, on 04/21/2008, -3/+27World police
- inactive, on 04/21/2008, -4/+27I thought they would be attempting to cook. that would be more likely to end life as we know it.
- YodaJones, on 04/21/2008, -10/+30Screw the USA, they can STFU. I also suggest they test fire it at Hillary Clinton.
- Sverre, on 04/21/2008, -0/+19That doesn't give a US Federal court jurisdiction over an experiment in Switzerland, though...
- blast_flame, on 04/21/2008, -1/+20Probably to upset the "science is just another name for an atheist conspiracy against religion" types.
- insomniac8400, on 04/21/2008, -2/+20"The suit, filed on March 21 in the Federal District Court, in Honolulu, seeks a temporary restraining order prohibiting Cern from proceeding with the accelerator until it can prove safety."
What a joke. Any judge that grants that is an idiot. Because the beauty is that they can ignore the restraining order since they aren't in the U.S. and then the resulting experiments will prove the concerns of these religious fanatics to be horribly incorrect and baseless. The fact that these people have protested other colliders that never destroyed anything should 100% prevent a judge from granting this. - kholburn, on 04/21/2008, -0/+17What, it might cause a leek in the fabric of the universe?
- insomniac8400, on 04/21/2008, -0/+17While the non-us citizens stay out of our country and ignore the frivolous lawsuit.
- RickyTheRiot, on 04/21/2008, -1/+17It was (Professor Stephen) Hawking that predicted micro black holes will appear in this sort of collision. Before his calculations nobody thought it was possible. For them to appear you have to prescribe to Hawking's theories. However Hawking also predicted that if micro black holes do appear, he also predicted that they would disappear within milliseconds. So, if the two contesting this are using his theories to point out the dangers of us all being swallowed up in a singularity, then surely consistency must be used and this case is thrown out of court.
As for Stranglets that's an entirely different kettle of fish, but are as unlikely to cause the end of the Earth as me finishing my cup of coffee. Examples of particles slamming into each other at high speeds is actually quite common in the universe, the reason for CERN is to have these incidents happen in a completely controllable and manageable environment.
Finally, considering we are talking astrophysics, you have to wonder what a nuclear safety officer (Wagner) and a botanist (Sancho) could possibly know that numerous highly trained and experienced professionals in the field do not.
As this is digg, and there is a need for flaming, could I also suggest that Wagner and Sancho are actually religious bigots who are desperate to see the ignorance and contradiction of their faith destroyed by man having a better understanding of the extreme distant past. - flagg85, on 04/21/2008, -0/+15A nuclear safety officer i can understand have a problem with this but a botanist?
- blast_flame, on 04/21/2008, -2/+17Answer: no.
- terajoule, on 04/21/2008, -1/+16Unforeseen Consequences?
- Woecip, on 04/21/2008, -1/+15Trust me, most americans hate them as much as you do.
- blast_flame, on 04/21/2008, -8/+22He doesn't seem to be the "science sucks" or "force my beliefs on everyone else" type so why do you care?
- AndrewDB, on 04/21/2008, -0/+14Why on Earth does that sound like something I'd expect Dave Lister from Red Dwarf to say?
- TheDiceMan, on 04/21/2008, -0/+13or they could've been the Golden Girls looking to stir things up a million miles away from CERN.
- Ebjius, on 04/21/2008, -0/+11Stock up on crowbars just in case..
- Azerael, on 04/21/2008, -5/+16Whether or not you're sure it's safe, go for it. Hopefully, one way or another, we'll finally shut the creationists up.
- Aensland, on 04/21/2008, -1/+11There are plenty of people for whom religion is an internal thing between themselves and $DEITY, not a set of beliefs to be paraded about and forced on other people. I don't care if top CERN scientists are disciples of Aleister Crawley, I just care that they do their work and leave their beliefs out of it. What they think to themselves during the course of their work ("look at that molecular configuration! hail xenu!") is none of my concern as long as it doesn't impact their work.
There have been many scientific advancements made by people who you probably wouldn't want to socialise with during their off hours. - booshack, on 04/21/2008, -2/+12Stop digging these stories... Those guys filing the suits are complete crackpots. As explained by BadAstronomy:
http://www.badastronomy.com/bablog/2008/03/29/no-t ...
This is the website of one of the guys:
http://www.unificationtheory.com/astrophysics/star ...
So can we please let this story die... - BuzzLightyear, on 04/21/2008, -1/+11Who cares if they make a black hole and we all disappear instantly?
No more Hillary, woo! - cdigioia, on 04/21/2008, -4/+13He probably mentioned it because Diggers tend to be so anti-religious and stereotype religious people so harshly.
(I'm an atheist btw - have to throw that in there so no-one gets pissed @ me on that count).
Diggers don't tend to be the smartest bunch, and have a mob mentality against a lot of groups and perceived groups. - Shadowgamers, on 04/21/2008, -1/+10I'm surprised CERN even cared about this suit, considering it's in the US and all...
- Berkana, on 04/21/2008, -4/+12You know, with things like this, we can't really know until they try it, and if it does destroy the world, it'll be too late to rule against it.
The physicists don't even fully understand the stuff they're investigating, and now they're expecting a judge to understand the matter to make a ruling? How absurd is that? - mizarone, on 04/21/2008, -0/+8Think of the herbs!
- archivist, on 04/21/2008, -7/+15i don't get these comments. why can't someone who believes in god can't be considered reasonable? i believe in god and i have always been fascinated by science much like the next guy (i wanted to be a scientist when i grow up but ended up in creatives) - that is how i was raised. why would you take it away from me?
- kinerry, on 04/21/2008, -19/+27you had me until "I believe in god"
- archivist, on 04/21/2008, -1/+8when did i say i was worried?
- WoollyMittens, on 04/21/2008, -1/+8*grabs crowbar*
- shakbhaji, on 04/21/2008, -2/+9"Brothers and sisters are natural enemies, like Englishmen and Scots, or Welshmen and Scots, or Japanese and Scots, or Scots and other Scots. Damn Scots, they ruined Scotland!"
Nothing to do with anything except the word Welsh, which for some reason I saw as an opportunity for a Simpsons reference. - johnnysaucepn, on 04/21/2008, -0/+7Because this is exactly the time when we need people to realise how many people with religious beliefs are actually supportive of scientific research - this is a time when some would have you believe you need to choose one over the other.
- Azerael, on 04/21/2008, -0/+7Don't worry, Torchwood wouldn't let it happen, right?
- RealmDown, on 04/21/2008, -0/+7The time bounce has already happened. Welcome to yesterday.
- mraustin1337, on 04/21/2008, -0/+6Of course! Lager! The only thing that can kill a vindaloo!
- Roblodocus, on 04/21/2008, -8/+14Why mention he believes in god then?
- darthjure, on 04/21/2008, -1/+7Couldn't they have raised these concerns BEFORE they spent $2 billion to build it?!
- Culyt, on 04/21/2008, -0/+6That depends on the country you live in. I doubt they would get very far in Cuba, and in Russia they didn't when the judge thew out the case as a waste of time.
Secondly they can not sue you through a US court, they would have to do it in your country by their laws in their court. - headzoo, on 04/21/2008, -1/+7Even lawyers hate lawyers.
- Evocati, on 04/21/2008, -2/+8People with their eyes closed won't see anything.
- adamwho, on 04/21/2008, -0/+5The convoluted nature of the lawsuit implies that they are a bunch of cranks.
- CarStan, on 04/21/2008, -0/+5The time bounce has already happened. Welcome to yesterday.
