- leetleo, on 01/18/2008, -7/+31I think it's safe to assume that people "who hate the pain of cell-phone charging" probably don't move around much anyway.
- Aleman360, on 01/18/2008, -0/+13Nowhere in the article or on M2E's website do they actually mention how much power their microgenerators put out. That's pretty critical to determining whether or not this thing is feasible, and since they're not plastering a significant number all over their website, I'm guessing it's not very impressive.
- Planterstick, on 01/18/2008, -0/+11on the contrary, i'd imagine those are the people who move around most and hate being tethered to an outlet while their cell-phone charges...
- TypeEE, on 01/18/2008, -0/+8then you don't need a cell phone.
- Niubai, on 01/18/2008, -1/+8And in Japan they have pee powered batteries ...
http://www.weirdasianews.com/2007/02/24/pee-powere ... - cadenine, on 01/18/2008, -1/+7"But your Honor, I wasn't urinating in public, I was charging my cell phone!"
- SebsWorld, on 01/18/2008, -0/+5Always wondered why phone manufactures cant just standardise on a single power adaptor.
- thoma4tr, on 01/18/2008, -0/+4make an adapter so i moves with your mouse
- inactive, on 01/18/2008, -0/+4Now you can quickly charge your devices when staying at seedy motels on the road. Just pop a quarter into the vibra-bed!
- xXIrsotehkewlXx, on 01/18/2008, -0/+4I pace if I'm on the phone with a guy. o_O I don't exactly have full stats when it comes to social skills. :(
- Sornos, on 01/18/2008, -0/+4Just put a few more points into Charm and you'll do fine.
- sites, on 01/18/2008, -0/+4She could be turning it off.... while she creeps around.
- surf314, on 01/18/2008, -2/+6My fiancee never remembers to charge her phone, I think I'll buy her this when it comes out.
- Aleman360, on 01/18/2008, -0/+3They purposely choose not to since it's such a lucrative market.
- Ramble, on 01/18/2008, -0/+3Not exactly new or original thinking. My watch and thousands of others do this, but rather than a battery mine stores it as mechanical energy in a spring.
- TinMan, on 01/18/2008, -0/+3But try to get a device that is hooked up to a cell phone through an airport.
- calon9, on 01/18/2008, -0/+2If inventions like this ever become mainstream, I think the average digg user will have an uncharged cell-phone.
- Bennito, on 01/19/2008, -0/+2All you really need is dexterity. You can win most guys over with that.
- Logicexe, on 01/18/2008, -0/+2They claim it can supply the power demands of PDA, digital cameras, MP3 players etc but the lack of any hard number concerns me as well.
I'm cautiously optimistic. - Zippo, on 01/18/2008, -0/+2I just always plug my cell phone in when I get home.
Is it really that difficult? - soil, on 01/18/2008, -1/+3Brilliant! If inventions like these and other renewable people-powered devices ever became sufficiently efficient and reliable, I imagine there could be far-reaching economic benefits.
...oh, and if big-utilities don't buy-it-and-bury-it - Thomaschaaf, on 01/18/2008, -0/+2I need this for my Laptop, when caring it around it would charge :)
- TypeEE, on 01/18/2008, -0/+2apparently yes because there are also, cameras, shavers, mp3 players, toothbrushs, remote control, mouses, that needed to be recharge.
- inactive, on 01/18/2008, -0/+2So we'll see this out in... say... 30 years?
- ninja0, on 01/18/2008, -0/+2I pace all the time. Works for me.
- litolist, on 01/18/2008, -0/+1Well it helps if you're the type that has to carry 2-3 extra battery packs. This should hopefully get rid of some of that annoyance.
- nvsocr7, on 01/18/2008, -0/+1 my roommate has this kind of technology in his watch (citizen eco drive or something like that). granted a watch doesnt compare in energy consumption to a cellphone but the idea is still the same; im surprised nobody thought of doing this sooner
- Grumps, on 01/18/2008, -0/+1If theres a breakthrough with the technology, it would work well for electric car. Fully charge your car and as you travel all day, it will recharge.
- litolist, on 01/18/2008, -0/+1I think in China they've standardized to mini USB.
- Shwinkster, on 01/18/2008, -0/+1The "pain of charging your cell phone"....apparently these people have chargers attached to mouse traps
- Ninnux, on 01/18/2008, -0/+1I knew the people at DARPA, when I was in the military, who first worked on this. As you might imagine, this is a huge area of research for the troops. Good to see it finally made it out into the public space.
- soil, on 01/18/2008, -0/+1I think you're looking for a different device. This charges with movement, not with TLC.
- inactive, on 01/18/2008, -1/+2Tuck it into your sock, and wiigle/tap your foot at your desk
- Logicexe, on 01/18/2008, -1/+2How is this moving backwards? We're just finding new innovative way to harness existing sources of energy. I doubt this technology will completely replace charging but if it could extent your cellphone battery life by a few hours or more how is it a bad thing?
- fluorite, on 01/18/2008, -0/+1Cell phone batteries have not had toxic heavy metals for years, not since NiCd days. Neither NiMH or lithium batteries have heavy metals.
Aside for longer life and less environmental damage, the other advantage of not having *heavy* metals it that the batteries are not *heavy*. - edwartica, on 01/18/2008, -0/+1Or if you, say, take public transportation to work and have to run for the bus...
- EmperorAwesome, on 01/18/2008, -0/+1I'll tell you right now, it's not feasible. Motion 2 Energy? What's the last needlessly specifically named company that really took off? I hate that *****. If you're the kind of idiot savant who can create awesome new technology, and then name your company right into the ground so none of us can ever use it, just ***** hire a guy.
- jschrab, on 01/18/2008, -0/+1I can foresee a near-future fashion trend of cargo pants with small zipper pockets at the cuff of the legs...
- edwartica, on 01/19/2008, -0/+1But its still convenient for someone like me who walks a lot and often times doesn't have time to charge my phone for a couple days at a time.
Sure they're going to put a "green spin" on it, that's called today's zeitgeist. But I really think its still useful. - nickymouse, on 01/18/2008, -0/+1I think I might need to sprint to charge my black berry
- nickymouse, on 01/18/2008, -0/+1if only we can harness the energy we use to flip through channels on a remote.
- edwartica, on 01/18/2008, -0/+1There's also those times when you're out for longer than your cell battery can last.
- Kenzan, on 01/18/2008, -0/+1The person who wrote this is an insulting retard:
"Well, for those of you who hate the pain of cell-phone charging, there is now a promising new technology that.."
No, sorry, it's not even remotely "new" technology....Try reading a book about Faraday, dumbass.
Then they wrote:
"Kinetic energy generation has been around forever (remember wind-up watches?")
Duh..why no, we don't remember wind up watches (which are still popular) were all ***** idiots!
So which is it genius?
It's new, or been around forever?
Just admit you have no ***** clue what you are writing about, you ***** hack.
- wookieface, on 01/21/2008, -0/+1Put these in a wiimote, and you're off to go...
- thoma4tr, on 01/18/2008, -0/+1attach your phone to your mouse
- BuddhaManFizz, on 01/18/2008, -0/+1anyone know why AMFORA submitted this story twice at the same time?
- Bennito, on 01/19/2008, -0/+1What's next, poop batteries?
*Phone Dies* "...Aww, *****!" - edwartica, on 01/18/2008, -0/+1How is this useless?
- ila002, on 01/31/2008, -0/+1Yeah that's three minutes of not having any light!
- linespin, on 01/18/2008, -0/+1Jack Bauer uses this technology ever since. Thats why he never needs to charge his cell phone... Call CTU if you want one too...
