- joauri, on 08/13/2008, -2/+52So this is why I married my ex-husband. . .
Oh yeah and I'm an idiot. ha. - BoneheadFarker, on 08/13/2008, -0/+45Ex-husband, eh?
So how you doin'? - MysticSavage, on 08/13/2008, -1/+46Pills don't make women make bad choices, women make bad choices all on their own.
- LexHrynyshyn, on 08/13/2008, -1/+37condom companies jump for joy
- MisterEX, on 08/13/2008, -1/+37Blah blah blah. Women will still date ***** and complain to the nice guys about it.
- Morghin, on 08/13/2008, -0/+28Now that that's been covered we go to the next point on the agenda; curing women from dating douchebags so they can start dating geeky people.
- CoreyHalliwell, on 08/13/2008, -0/+26As a lonely, heavy set gamer, i support birth control.
- Sonan, on 08/13/2008, -2/+25I call dibs on MHCHarmony.com
"Review your major histocompatibility complex aromatic molecular compatibility results now for free!" - Eezyville, on 08/13/2008, -0/+18Exactly, its time for these women to be responsible for their choices.
- loisln77, on 08/13/2008, -0/+17I agree. Daddy Issues definitely are a strong card.
- mooshcala, on 08/13/2008, -1/+18This is exactly why I stopped taking the pill 8 months ago–I really wondered if there was any validity to the MHC claim. No luck yet "sniffing out" anybody I like, but it is nice not bothering to remember to eat a pill every day at the same time.
- inactive, on 08/13/2008, -3/+18Doesn't matter if she's a nagging bitch to begin with.
- brutalentropy, on 08/13/2008, -1/+16"My daughter has bouts before, during and after ovulation. Means 3 weeks out of the month she hates everyone and everything. Gotta tell you, these are FUN times. :)"
It *could* be because she's 15. Teenagers aren't known for their calm emotional levels. Just sayin'
;) - irishjays, on 08/13/2008, -8/+22Something smells fishy
- Typhoon2009, on 08/13/2008, -2/+15I thought women were always attracted to *****
- FatBird19, on 08/13/2008, -1/+14Sense: This comment makes none
- kingmanic, on 08/13/2008, -0/+12If that is her daughters plan, she's being more responsible then most 15 years olds.
- Atmeh, on 08/13/2008, -4/+15Great, my baby girl, under 15, has been diagnosed with severe endometriosis. The only remedy the Docs offer is birth control. She thinks I am an alien because I've never had cramps or PMS.
No one in my family ever has, so I gotta say "Thanks Dad". Now I have to worry that she will *always* pick the wrong guy?
My daughter has bouts before, during and after ovulation. Means 3 weeks out of the month she hates everyone and everything. Gotta tell you, these are FUN times. :)
I don't think I want to deal with the extremeley WRONG guy for eternity. I want a second opinion! - joauri, on 08/13/2008, -1/+12So you get on birth control to be a whore?
News to every woman in the world. Thanks for letting us all know that since we are trying to keep from having unwanted children, we are all in fact slutty whores.
Follow me to the bar, boys! I've just learned I want to be a whore.
Sheesh, I think you had emotional problems before the pill. - kingmanic, on 08/13/2008, -1/+11It's about immune compatibilities. Instead of choosing the more dissimilar person, she would choose a person who is similar to her. Decreasing the general diversity but I doubt it'll have a serious impact on her life. Basically it's disrupting a mechanism that help diversify the gene line by making you more attracted to people who are less related to you. It may play a role in long term attraction but I'm fairly certain the data isn't that significant yet.
- alecsputnik, on 08/13/2008, -0/+9wait, my wife takes birth control. oh well, worked good for me!
- Hetman, on 08/13/2008, -1/+10Even if it does really make you chose wrong mates. Which means basically you have no free will but that is a different problem all together. At least you are not having 25 babies with an ***** you hate. You are not having any at all. Which makes it an easy fix. Break up with him.
- MisterEX, on 08/13/2008, -2/+10Naw, you're way off.
You tried to go after girls out of your league, failed, and lowered your standards to a more compatible mate. Congrats on your engagement! - RobotBuddha, on 08/13/2008, -1/+8Severe and "so subtle that it takes a lifetime of people on it to get even the barest glimpse of a possibility" are two things that don't go well together.
- kingmanic, on 08/13/2008, -2/+9Find an interesting guy, get back on the pill. That may be a better idea which cir cum navigates the problems th article descibes.
- Nemesisesq, on 08/13/2008, -0/+7apparently you're not a man and don't know how little is required to get us into a relationship.
- duckyinc, on 08/13/2008, -0/+7but at least they can't create bad children
- Nemesisesq, on 08/13/2008, -1/+8Well I think that alot of commenters are kinda missing the point of the article, and the social and societal implications that is has. According to this study the influences women to pick genetically similar mates. This isn't a problem if you're just looking for some fun and you don't want to settle down but it is a problem for girls who get hooked up with a guy while she's on the pill and then marries a guy who is not genetically diverse enough for breeding according to her own biological programing. lack of genetic diversity is a major factors in genetic disease and immune health, not to mention mental health and the mood and disposition of resulting children, hell any dog breeder could tell you that inbred dogs are ornery.
Look at the rise in the cases of autism and persistent genetic diseases in children, since the government and interest groups began pushing oral contraceptives, there is a correlation that could be gleaned from comparing the two sets of data. Not to mention the rates of divorce since when a woman who was on the pill gets married will no longer find her mate attractive becasue she stops taking the pill and her biological preference for genetic diversity kicks in again. Think of how many families ruined by divorce could have been influenced by the pill and it's influence over a womans choice in a mate.
Not to mention how many girls can't find a good guy this could be a major reason.
Moral of the story: Find a guy off the pill wait 3 months then go on the pill. - brettg102, on 08/13/2008, -0/+7Also responsible for our strippers! Thank you Daddy Issues!
- kingmanic, on 08/13/2008, -1/+7Option a: Take pill, start relationship with someone genetically more similar. MAY influence long term relationship stability, MAY influence the health of your children.
Option b: Condoms all the time.
Option c: get knocked up by the genetically dissimilar guy.
I'm not sure how strong the data is for long term relationship disruption or health of the progeny but I'm fairly certain the news media doesn't understand the science, over state the effects, and lead people to options which may be worse. Condoms all the time is another valid option. Getting knocked up has real guaranteed consequences while MHC similarity has some potential consequences. Condoms require two parties to control fertility while the pill allows a woman to control their fertility. - MisterEX, on 08/13/2008, -0/+6Age is definitely an important factor. I've grown up and starting finding that looks really aren't everything. I've got a girlfriend that I truly believe is absolutely gorgeous, but I know she's not a super model. I love her for reasons that go far beyond what she looks like and I think that experience and age play an important role in that.
I am and always will be a nice guy. I'm not a douchebag. I've never stalked anyone and never will (that's too much effort, and I'm too laid back). I've had so many girls come to me for advice and comfort, usually about how their ***** boyfriend did something to upset her for the 10,000th time. It gets old pretty fast.
Good luck on the marriage, I really do hope everything works out for you both. - jellygraph, on 08/13/2008, -0/+6Kinda makes sense, one of my exs broke up with me all of a sudden when she started taking the pill. Not that I care anymore, but I wondered at the time if there was any correllation.
- theOster, on 08/13/2008, -0/+5check out the nuva ring
- WiretapStudios, on 08/13/2008, -0/+5It's called 'hormones'.
- Lesli, on 08/13/2008, -0/+5Being a geek does not exclude one from being an *****.
- clsslc, on 08/13/2008, -1/+6Agreed. However, "incompatible mate" does not necessarily mean the guy's an *****. "Incompatible mate" is a relative term, "*****" isn't.
- joauri, on 08/13/2008, -0/+4ha! I wish.
- Atmeh, on 08/13/2008, -2/+6It's called extreme abdominal pain. They gave my baby morphin and something called toradol via IV. Get your mind out of the gutter.
- joauri, on 08/13/2008, -1/+5Well, maybe you are in a stable relationship or marriage and you don't want to get pregnant?
My doctor gives me bc pills for free. She can't exactly do that with an IUD. So yeah, I do take the pill to have sex and not get pregnant. I think its better than having sex and lots of unwanted babies.
As far as the side effects you talk about, I may be lucky, but I don't get emotional on the pill. It just makes my skin pretty and clear. Good thing, actually. Helps when I'm picking up the wrong man at the bar for random sex where I won't get pregnant.
Not a slight against you, this article just sucks out loud. - WiretapStudios, on 08/13/2008, -0/+4I always had luck being a little from each column... Nobody wants an *****, and nobody wants a whiny loser. You have to find the sweet spot.
- WiretapStudios, on 08/13/2008, -0/+4That really puts a twist on 'sniffing out'
- DrPh0bius, on 08/13/2008, -0/+4thank you.
- Johnagain, on 08/13/2008, -6/+10Atmeh, It's common banter at school among girls her age that if you fake 'hard' periods, your mom will take you to the doctor and birth control pills will be the diagnosis. You see, endometriosis is normally diagnosed 'by exclusion' - meaning there is nothing else wrong with her, so it must be endo. The easiest test for endo is putting a girl on BC pills. Pain go away? Ah, must have been endo! Absolute confirmation is so invasive, it is rarely if ever done. Many young teen girls know that this is the easiest way to get on BC pills, without suspicion from the parents. Please understand - I am NOT saying that you daughter is lying to you, just consider the posability that she may be. Monitor her behavior and location closely, if she is spending time alone with boys - ANY amount of time - you should investigate immediately.
- mpopzzz, on 08/13/2008, -14/+18second opinion: you talk too much.
- Nowaiman, on 08/13/2008, -2/+6yeah, it's always a bit annoying when i find them talking to my butt instead of my face
- coyote1284, on 08/13/2008, -0/+4I see what you did there.
- kingmanic, on 08/13/2008, -1/+5Thank you again.
I think it's a situation we create. Why do they come to you for comfort? because you were a friend. If you wanted to be more you should have made that intention known early. Becoming a friend and then trying to convert that to a relationship is hard and often unfair to them and you. To them it puts pressure to either become something more of scuttle a friendship. To you because it means you have to endure hearing them complain about their SO and be the shoulder to cry on. I find it's the "nice guys" biggest mistake is that they don't know how to start a relationship. They try to do the Friends -> lovers conversion which sometimes works but often just make the nice guy frustrated.
I may have been over generalizing about douchebag/stalker but generally the failure to initiate relationships is the nice guys fault. They don't notice the signals of interests or they "go after girls out of their league". The nice guy is unwilling to just put his cards on the table and see where it goes, and instead tries to go the self-perceived emotionally less risky route of firend -> lover.
Congrats on finding something deep. Finding a deeper connection is what everyone is looking for. -
