"Geeks have an innate inability to speak simple english" - Pottersquash, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Your cat actually just did complex calculus and has predicted the future through the probablity of all possible actions. Your cat is wise myfriend. Meanwhile my dog has but 3 thoughts "where is food" where shall i pee" "is it possible to 'mount' that"
- techlinks, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Hahahaha. I wonder if they know the English laguage too?
- duke, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1How many maths are there?
- Xiol, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Different? We invented the damn language! (Well, you know what I mean...) You stole it and removed all the damn 'u's from it!
On topic though, I reckon all that I've been left with 20 years later is the same basic ability to do maths and nothing more... I've always sucked at it! - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0In other news babies are attracted to target symbols because they bare resemblance to a nipple.
Of course babies can count, most animals can count to some degree. - DrEbola, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I am a baby. I digg this article.
- vhold, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Those wacky babies, nobody knows what they'll do next!
- SupaDawg, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0after we're done with our maths can we play with some legos?
Heh, seriously thou, brits are cooky creatures so i'm not at all suprised by their special spelling.
On the topic this is kinda interesting but not all too suprising. digg nonetheless. - alphamerik, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Everyone knows that cats are experts at quantum mechanics.
Jeesh, babies are such neophytes, I am always having to teach them everything. - SteveR4376, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1If my wife, son and repeat this experiment with our cat in the room, he looks at each of us in turn just like in the study. He is undoubtedly thinking "3." Sounds like "cats have an innate ability to do simple maths."
- jnorris441, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Maybe I should hire a baby to do my programming work and pay him in Cheerios.
- techlinks, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1language*
- TargetDigg, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1"No they don't. They have an inate ability to poop their diapers. That's all. They're babies." - Spoken like a man with no children. :)
Honestly, you'd be suprised the things they figure out. It think that they are so new, that they spend every waking moment trying to understand the world around them. - shaundude, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Anybody realize that "Maths" comes from the word "Mathematics" and therefore is probably the more logical way to go if you were to abbreviate it? Not that I'm saying either one is wrong, because they're not.
- mancat, on 10/12/2007, -4/+4And American babies have an innate ability to do simple math.
- ProfHognutz, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1I read that article and I'm not sure that holding the concept of more than one entity in your mind is something I would call math. Or maths even.
- madmathmatician, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"Those wacky babies, nobody knows what they'll do next!"
LOLOL - chubbymidget, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0This is from England. Their math is completely different.
- tablatronix, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0hahahaa
I only clickied on this to see how many people bitch about the grammar of "maths" out of their own ignorance.
Of course there were a few. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"Hahahaha. I wonder if they know the English laguage too?"
AAAHAHAHA!!! Looks like you just owned yourself there, big boy ;p
BTW, "maths" is acceptable... dumbass! - phenopticon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Johnny has three maths, if Susie takes away two how many maths does Johnny have?
(yeah yeah I know it's how they say it in teh england but it still sounds funny) - o0joshua0o, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Babies are n00bs. :-)
- dwhitbeck, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"In other news babies are attracted to target symbols because they bare resemblance to a nipple.

Baby pigs should be able to count further. - allthewhile, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1"In other news...
"Geeks have an innate inability to speak simple english"
It is proper English. They say "maths" across the pond. Good try though. - Pie_Man, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"In other news...
"Geeks have an innate inability to speak simple english"
It is proper English. They say "maths" across the pond. Good try though.
--------------------------------------------------------
There are different types of math...Calculus, Geometry, Arithmatic, Statistics, etc...so pluralizing it makes perfect sense.
--------------------------------------------------------
I really wasn't restricting that comment to this article. Geeks generally do suck at english. - jwalk81980, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I had a dog that could do math. If you gave him 4 hot dogs and then took 2 away he would bite you.
- qishi, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0If you didn't realize (realise?) that some people in the world use the word "maths", you probably have never participated in any email, usenet, web, or any internet activity about math, or anything technical. Like tablatronix said, I just knew those kind of people would overtake this discussion with their ignorance.
- humblemagii, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Let me be the first to welcome our new Baby Overlords!
- dwhitbeck, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"Maybe I should hire a baby to do my programming work and pay him in Cheerios."
Good idea, baby probably programs directly in binary and can use some of the cheerios for zeros, not sure about the ones. - lukas88, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0In other news, scientific expirements on asian babies has now become legal
- kalioto, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0What about spellings?
- DiggerT, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0ah nice, now just need to find a baby to do my homework for me :)
- bigpeeler, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0No they don't. They have an inate ability to poop their diapers. That's all. They're babies.
- machinelou, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Innate? Was this study conducted on infants right out of the womb? I didn't think so. Even then, trying to argue one way or the other on the nature versus nurture debate reflects a fundemental misunderstanding about the way evolutionary and ontological processes work. Organisms don't evolve in a vacuum. You can't have a complete organism without an evolutionary history either. Furthermore, any assertion that a given property or characteristic is innate removes it from further study when clearly there are things that can be done during the lifetime of an organism to improve that characteristic. For example, if Johnny comes home one day with a C in math class, are you going to say, "Oh Johnny, it's okay, you obviously inhereted your father's math genes so we didn't really expect you to do any better." or are you going to say "Why don't we turn off the tv for a couple of hours and go over some of your homework together." If you have an inclination to respond in favor of the later statement, then wtf is the point of studies that try to suggest something one way or the other on nature versus nurture?? All they do is stop further investigation into other variables that are more likely to affect behavior.
- SpydrMrphy, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0 The site got the Digg Effect, anyone got an alt link?
- Zippo, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1Wasn't there a kids movie made about this in the 90's?
- bryanweatherly, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0If the word "innate" had not appeared in the headline, I would not have even read the story. Human beings have absolutely no innate abilities, unless you count the subconscious actions that your brain performs (i.e. breathing, pumping blood).
The god, the article said nothing to imply that babies doing "maths" is innate, just a misleading headline. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1What? babies cant do maths :S

Oh yea? Well my cat can program! It’s only in binary though. - Dogtanian, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Am I the only one who read the title as 'Barbies' ?!
- Jozer99, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Wow, never thought I would see it on digg. A cat fanboy...
- allthewhile, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0They say "maths" in England. It's not improper English just different!
- chiefcrazytalk, on 10/12/2007, -3/+0The plural of "Math" is "Math" , not "Maths". (at least in the USA). No Digg.
