I know how to spark this discussion:
*Creationists sometimes invoke the inevitable loss of information in a signal as proof that evolution cannot "add information" to a creature's DNA. For example, Answers In Genesis claims that all evolution and adaptation is a result of a loss of information. With regards to information theory as it is presented here, is this reasonable or unreasonable?
Discuss.
:) - lcohiomatty86, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4that particular idea of ALL change being a loss is saying abit to much... however it is understandable to assume that some of the minor changes within a species is caused by a mutation caused by the loss of certain base pairings.
most likly what they are referring to is how insanly un-likly it is to start out with somethin like a 1-celled organism and get all the way to humans by small little changes over time. - craigsheppard, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Didn't rtfa yet, but I'm sure with each evolutionary step you're losing information about the *initial* state. However, that's only a problem if you're concerned with determining the initial state. Obviously external factors could add information to a system - not information about where we were, but where we are.
happy v3 :) - cantoral, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2There is a connection between information theory and black holes, 't Hooft and Hawking have worked on that.
- lorensingley, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Hmm. Interesting article. Especially interesting because it is that exact process which allows me to read the article i just read.
- lorensingley, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I can't say i understand what you mean by any of that but, YEAH!
- vegasbright, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1There was an article in Sciam abouit that. Pretty good writeup on it.
- kurtu5, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1GEB does a very good job of describing Godel and the halting problem. Its so good that I understand most of it, even though I am only halfway through.
- Bloast, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0That's pretty cool
- TheCookieMaker, on 10/12/2007, -8/+1second [/sarcasm] but yeah this is certainly lacking in comments
