- ghidorahnotweak, on 02/29/2008, -1/+20I like the idea that our brains can already repair themselves -- goes against what I thought was the conventional wisdom.
- WiseWeasel, on 02/29/2008, -0/+13So the treatment for brain damage is a traumatic brain injury? Sounds like a winning remedy to me... We could just cut out the middle man and administer this treatment ourselves!
- lAciDl, on 02/29/2008, -0/+10just eat an egg salad sandwich out of a vending machine.
- macjaeh, on 02/29/2008, -1/+9They can find a cure for alzheimers, but still no cure for the Red Ring of Death? It's called priorities people.
- inactive, on 02/29/2008, -0/+8Is this like the "EASY" button they advertise on TV?
- Bisclavret, on 02/29/2008, -0/+7my grandmother unfortunately suffers from alzheimers, it's a horrible disease that's had an impact on our family. i'm not sure if the fruitions of this research would be able to get to her in time, but its good to know that there's hope down the line for us since this runs through the family.
- Ellipsys, on 02/29/2008, -0/+7King Worm: "You want to know what makes the special sauce so special?" *points to self* "Yo!"
- Amablue, on 02/29/2008, -0/+5Doctors have been told that if hitting this "reset" doesn't work they should take the brain out, blow in it, then put it back in.
- gcnaddict, on 02/29/2008, -0/+5I think humanity got their priorities straight this time...
- Arkz, on 02/29/2008, -0/+4"A 27 year-old bird from san francisco" in other words a 12 year old boy with.. issues
- schmitey, on 02/29/2008, -0/+4I can say from working in nursing homes...Alzheimers scares the hell out of me!!! I seriously hope to God this dreadful plague of a disease is cured by the time I age/retire. It strips people of their identity and dignity unlike anything else out there.
- Murdats, on 02/29/2008, -2/+6really? people recover from memory loss and the like fairly often.
I thought it was quite common knowledge that the brain was quite dynamic and robust - fongalong, on 02/29/2008, -0/+3Cheers Bisclavret. In the same boat myself.
- rnwen2750, on 02/29/2008, -0/+3Yeah, I see what you mean. Although this would be a highly specialized treatment and done by very skilled professionals, it kind of reminds me of when we used to split peoples brains to "cure" them of various diseases. Sure, most of them ended up as vegetables or as entirely different people, but hey!
- Bologner, on 02/29/2008, -0/+3I'd like a reset button for when I do stupid *****.
- ennTOXX, on 02/29/2008, -0/+3I know several people who could use this brain button, but they'd still be dumb. I mean stupid. No, I mean dumb. well, you know what I mean, Dupid... :||
- inactive, on 02/29/2008, -0/+3I heard there was a "reset button" for the brain that could cure alzheimers!
- TalenGTP, on 02/29/2008, -0/+3***** a reset, hows about a System Restore?
- inactive, on 02/29/2008, -0/+3Ditto. My Father is in middle stage: can't piss straight, needs lots of help dressing, eating, navigating everyday life. Has not spoken a cohesive sentence in over a year now. However, I wonder about this "reset technology" , even when my Pops was running on all cylinders, he suffered from anxieties, obsessive disorders, self medication etc. The Alzheimer's has seemed to mellow him out and he seems to be back to his basic nature which is sweet and gentle. Good luck. Hang in there.
- Hobbes24, on 02/29/2008, -0/+3*****, but what if we lost files that were in progress at time of shutdown?
- GothAlice, on 02/29/2008, -0/+3Any neural network (biologic, pun intended, or otherwise) can heal itself. It just needs to be given enough time to re-route and re-learn the pathways that were lost. Thus people who have never been able to see can be taught to actually -see- through sound alone. (Funky-nifty hip computer + camera gadget that produces sounds like static in several passes - one for luminosity, one for hue, one for patterns, one for depth, etc.)
- Konrad9, on 02/29/2008, -0/+2Seeing how widespread the horrors of Alzheimers is, I can't see him (or anyone) really battling this back.
It's one thing to spend a lot of money at a gas station, or on your winter heating bill.
To see your family member(s) go through Alzheimers... to talk to them without them knowing who you are, without them knowing who THEY are, or WHERE they are..
I can't visit my grandfather by myself, I just can't handle it.
If something could make him better, or something could help others in his condition, there is not a thing in this universe that would get in my way.
If this works, it's going to be used. And everyone will benefit from it.
I don't care what I have to do, it is going to happen. - inactive, on 02/29/2008, -0/+2I wonder if this is the explanation for stories like this:
http://www.recordonline.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article? ...
A man who lost vision in his right eye had it restored by getting kicked in the head by a horse. - kone, on 02/29/2008, -0/+2you sir, are my hero! one of the greatest futurama moments.
- DrDigg, on 02/29/2008, -0/+2Just hold down the power button for ten seconds, everyone knows that one.
- virtualball, on 02/29/2008, -0/+2"Ugh grandma doesn't remember my name anymore... Where's that EASY button at?" *Punches grandma in the head. "Found it!"
- virtualball, on 02/29/2008, -0/+2Well, that's a semi-spoiler and the rat didn't have Alzheimer's, it had *********SPOILER********** brain aneurisms from traveling thru time *********END SPOILERS********
- TheXuu, on 02/29/2008, -0/+2Hey just as long as it doesn't create an alien bug to go popping out of my chest like i saw on Torchwood!
- greenlight2001, on 02/29/2008, -0/+2Frontal lobotomy.
- Bologner, on 02/29/2008, -0/+2No, you're really just an idiot.
- macjaeh, on 02/29/2008, -0/+2Grandma died of Alzheimers recently, comedy helps me through stuff like that.
- inactive, on 02/29/2008, -0/+1That was hilariously insensitive.
- arunforce, on 02/29/2008, -0/+1Will you be my constant?
- virtualball, on 02/29/2008, -0/+1Morbid...
- thedarkrabbit, on 02/29/2008, -0/+1I wish my brain had a reset button after several first-dates I've had....
not to make light of this situation at all... just trying to be funny.
It's okay to bury me. - wondertwins, on 02/29/2008, -0/+1not funny.
- dvsbastard, on 02/29/2008, -1/+2Buried and blocked...
http://digg.com/users/brownsnake12/history/comment ... - atchon, on 02/29/2008, -0/+1As interesting as this is, it isn't a direct cure for Alzheimer's. This could eventually allow the regrowth of neurons after the Alzheimer's has been treated, but won't actually rid the brain of Alzheimer's plaques.
Alzheimer's is caused by aggregation of Beta-amyloid which eventually puts pressure on neurons. An actual cure for Alzheimer's will probably come in the form of Beta-amyloid breaker which will act to disrupt the Beta sheets formed by the Beta-amyloid. - t0ny, on 02/29/2008, -1/+2Well its not a button its buttons. I think it is ctrl-alt-del.
- fongalong, on 02/29/2008, -0/+1Regardless of the technicalities, as the son of someone who is suffering from severe brain degeneration, articles such as these really shine a bit of hope into an otherwise bleak forecast. I just hope they don't decide to ban testing based on some arbitrary threshold of morality.
- koko775, on 02/29/2008, -0/+1I spy a freudian slip. I think you've got more than one red ring, if you catch my drift. =P
I jest, I jest. - nardo510, on 02/29/2008, -0/+1You guys think you wont forget past experiences so you can be able to remember new ones?
- sonicularulus, on 02/29/2008, -0/+1when we reset our brain, wouldn't that mean forgetting everything? which is worse, forgetting most of your memory, or all of your memory?
- rkho, on 02/29/2008, -0/+1Bush needs one, maybe it'll make him smarter.
- LeeSoong, on 03/04/2008, -0/+1Rats, now you tell me our Brains are as faulty as XBOX 360s?
Red Ring Of Death... - wire02, on 02/29/2008, -0/+1ok we got reset down....so where is quick save and reload?
- starkruzr, on 02/29/2008, -0/+1"lol" destroyed any benefit your post may have had.
- inactive, on 02/29/2008, -0/+1This digg completes me, title alone.
- encrypteduser, on 02/29/2008, -0/+1Dugg because it runs on both sides of my family and I'm scared to death that I might get it. :/
- russkie69, on 03/05/2008, -0/+1Why is that bizarre and rude comment at the very top allowed to just sit there? It's pretty offensive. About the story, I'd love for someone to push MY idiot button and make me less of an ignoramus.
