i don't know about you but i was hoping they found one at LEAST 3 ft tall - ironeus, on 09/20/2008, -5/+111its prayers have been answered!
- shadowkiller137, on 09/20/2008, -4/+108Let's extract its DNA and clone it!!
- 4DFX, on 09/20/2008, -19/+103Wait this can't be right! Everybody knows that Earth is only 6000 years old. The mantis was obviously made to look as if it was 86.4 million years old at the time of creation!
- AmericanGunner, on 09/20/2008, -6/+64DINO DNA!
- inactive, on 09/21/2008, -2/+38"Is the 87-million-year-old praying mantis recently found encased in amber in Japan a “missing link” between mantises from the Cretaceous period and modern-day insects?
...
Even more unique is the fact that this mantis is different from the other six, in that it has two spines protruding from its femur and it has mysterious, tiny hairs on its forelegs.
...
“The years of the late Cretaceous period were a kind of transition phase between the ancient and modern worlds, and this fossil displays many intermediate elements between the two eras” said Ueda." - fattehboi, on 09/21/2008, -2/+32the thumbnails bigger than the real picture...i wanted to see some HIGH DEFINITION quality
- GordonFree, on 09/21/2008, -16/+4587 Million??!?! But but... the earth is only 6000 years old!
That mantis was put here by God to test our faith!!! Aaarrghhh - noahgelman, on 09/21/2008, -3/+32Im Christian and even I think you're retarded.
- Zarokima, on 09/21/2008, -2/+28Please stay away from this discussion until you at least know what a scientific theory is.

Thank you Shecky Digger. - nielkie, on 09/21/2008, -1/+26I recall the time they found those fossilised mosquitoes
And before long, they were cloning DNA
Now I'm being chased by some irate velociraptors
Well, believe me... this has been one lousy day
Jurassic Park is frightening in the dark
All the dinosaurs are running wild - LBobRife, on 09/21/2008, -2/+24You may want to check your decimals on that one...
- wondertwins, on 09/21/2008, -6/+26Hes almost as old as John McCain!
- Shiftyeyedgoat, on 09/21/2008, -2/+21That's it? THAT is the best photo we get of the prehistoric mantis that is almost 90 million year old?
- LordBoreal51, on 09/21/2008, -2/+20That isn't funny.
- inhaler, on 09/21/2008, -4/+20This is Digg.
Additionally, it isn't an argument about religion. It's an argument about ignorance. - Kappa, on 09/21/2008, -0/+15Someone shut the fence off in the rain
I admit it's kinda eerie
But this proves my chaos theory
And I don't think I'll be coming back again
Oh no - talonstriker, on 09/21/2008, -2/+16RTFA or the link to NG posted down the page.
- flyguyjm, on 09/21/2008, -2/+16direct link to national geographic - http://news.nationalgeographic.com/news/2008/04/08 ...
- PabloIV, on 09/21/2008, -7/+20It's gotta be at least over 9000.
- inactive, on 09/21/2008, -2/+15Neither is your response.
- pintomp3, on 09/21/2008, -4/+17sadly, he's not alone. america is going through an anti-intellectual and anti-science phase. just look at the popularity of people like sarah palin and ron paul.
- ak4444, on 09/21/2008, -0/+13Apparently someones never watched Jurassic Park.
- qster, on 09/21/2008, -3/+15Bigger picture here
http://blogs.periodistadigital.com/ciencia.php/200 ... - nitsuj, on 09/21/2008, -0/+11"Wishful thinking."
And your counter explanation is....? - ozydingo, on 09/21/2008, -0/+11"Wishful thinking"
I believe it's called "reading," but i dunno, maybe my English isn't so great these days. - arcticblue, on 09/21/2008, -2/+13Was the picture taken with a 5 year old cell phone or something? It's 2008! When an image in a story is clickable, I expect to be able to see a bigger version of it...not the exact same size. Anyone got a bigger version?
- zrang, on 09/21/2008, -3/+1487 Million Year-Old Praying Mantis Found...ALIVE!!!
THAT would have been an interesting headline. - inactive, on 09/21/2008, -0/+10Homeschooling is the prime instrument by which incompetent evangelical nutjob parents inflict delusion upon their innocent children, hartley, so you'll forgive us if we're just the least little bit leery.
- TalkingBanana, on 09/21/2008, -0/+10He's a creationist. He doesn't believe in counter-explanations.
- minigig, on 09/21/2008, -1/+11or it means it did a very good job
- Duncster, on 09/21/2008, -8/+17HOLD ON TO YOUR BUTTS!
- Lith25, on 09/21/2008, -2/+12EVEN IF that had been the case, that would not a reason to deny evolution. There are species which reached their evolutionary peak earlier than others. The horse-shoe crap is just one example.
- TheCatsPants, on 09/21/2008, -1/+11"So, for 87 million years, the Prayer Mantis hasn't changed that much, huh?"
That's right. Does evolutionary theory state that organisms *must* change? No, it states that selection pressures make organisms change over time. No selection pressure means very little change. - macattak420, on 09/21/2008, -0/+9ok palin
- Authustian, on 09/21/2008, -0/+9*Zorak
- sulthernao, on 09/21/2008, -0/+9Carbon dating has a half-life of 6000 years. So I think not.... In regards to your question on accuracy: Scientist can calibrate dating with lots of different elemental half-lives so it is pretty accurate. Carbon not being stable might affect the exact date, but if you are trying to argue that this thing is not millions of years of old, then I honestly don't know what's wrong with you.
- Setherex, on 09/21/2008, -2/+11Nowadays, everything has a coffin that will never have enough nails in it
- UbIwerks, on 09/21/2008, -1/+10Someone let T. Rex out of his pen
I'm afraid those things will harm me
'Cause they sure don't act like Barney
And they think that I'm they're dinner not their friend
Oh no - Zarokima, on 09/21/2008, -1/+10All species are always in the middle of evolution. It doesn't start and stop, it's always happening, thought the rate of change varies.
- DeskFlyer, on 09/21/2008, -1/+9Are we supposed to be the only species on the planet or something? New species are derived from old ones; that doesn't necessarily mean the older ones go away. Using your logic, the food chain wouldn't exist.
- TheTaoOfBill, on 09/21/2008, -0/+8Just add frog DNA!
- bowens44, on 09/21/2008, -4/+12How exactly would that be a 'nail in the coffin of evolutionary theory? Basically , are you are doing is showing your ignorance. You know nothing about evolution. Home schooled?
- styx31989, on 09/21/2008, -0/+8Well, why don't you enlighten the rest of us?
- Zarokima, on 09/21/2008, -1/+8Do not come back to this discussion until you learn what a scientific theory is and can actually contribute something.
- Lith25, on 09/21/2008, -4/+11Who says there are no fossils which show species in the middle of evolution?
Add one to the thousands already discovered. - Nin10dude, on 09/21/2008, -2/+9Evolution isn't instant change, it's not as if we believe our ancestors suddenly popped out a human, and one day we'll pop out another thing, I shouldn't have to tell you that. It's still a praying mantis, yes, but this specimen undeniably different from the kind that exist today.
- jman583, on 09/21/2008, -0/+7Because it is just that awesome.
