- trezeguet23, on 11/24/2007, -0/+35Agreed, Mendeleev certainly was deserving.
- angesbiz, on 11/24/2007, -0/+22So many comments about Ghandi that I have never heard of before.
- ohsin, on 11/24/2007, -1/+23I cant help but laugh out loud at the first 2 comments on this article's main page.
- inactive, on 11/24/2007, -5/+23Einstein never won the nobel prize for relativity ( E=mc^2 ) instead he won it for Brownian motion.
- Scienceisfun, on 11/24/2007, -0/+14No, he won it for the photoelectric effect. He also ended up giving the money to his ex-wife, as part of their divorce settlement, which is a bit crazy, because she was so sure his work was worth a Nobel, that she made that deal 2 years before he won the prize.
- etsa, on 11/24/2007, -1/+14Salute to all. At least Math got the The Fields Medal.
- pilotss, on 11/24/2007, -1/+13I had no idea it was that political until Gore took one home.
- Borthwick, on 11/24/2007, -0/+9First guy I thought of, too. I wonder where we'd be if Edison hadn't screwed Tesla over.
- tusseyd, on 11/24/2007, -2/+11Missing all those who died prior to receive the prize, as the Nobel committee does not aware posthumously. Most notably, Rosalind Franklin who REALLY discovered DNA and who's work was stolen by Frick, Watson, and Wilkins (and who did win the Nobel).
- Rostin, on 11/24/2007, -1/+9"Scientists and Intellectuals are supposed to be above petty politics and popularity contests, right?" Give me a break. I've worked in industry for a few years, and now I'm a PhD student. The politics in academia is a million times worse. It's been so bad for so long that no one is even bothered by it anymore. You just do your best to incorporate it into your plans and move on.
- leexy, on 11/24/2007, -0/+6The plural for "krona" is "kronor". Millions of Swedish KRONOR.
- EmperorAwesome, on 11/24/2007, -3/+9James Joyce was the boringest author ever.
- chukd, on 11/24/2007, -1/+6If you look at the list of people that got the award, it is amusing to see Al Gore and the reason. Past winners did things like try to remove land mines, negotiate peace treaties, found organizations promoting peace, ensuring free elections, etc... . I don't see global warming doing much for promoting peace.
- Rosy720, on 11/24/2007, -0/+5I'm surprised G.N. Lewis (the covalent bond, surely everyone can remember learning Lewis Structures in high school chemistry) isn't on the list.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gilbert_N._Lewis - scabbers, on 11/24/2007, -0/+5Non-violent resistance is a fine idea if you're ever given the chance to choose in the first place.
- cjmemay, on 11/24/2007, -0/+5FTA:
1. Joan Robinson, Economics
2. Dmitri Mendeleev, Chemistry
3. Mahatma Gandhi, Peace
4. James Joyce, Literature
5. Marcel Proust, Literature
6. Jules-Henri Poincaré, Physics
7. Raymond Damadian, Medicine
8. Oh, and Anybody in Mathematics - mattes5, on 11/24/2007, -2/+7Yeah this is why the Nobel Prize shouldn't be taken seriously... People who actually deserve it don't get it... then moron narcissistic politicians interested in self promotion, make a movie about a well known problem... then fly in their private jets and tell everyone else not to... are the ones who win them.
- weezcnr, on 11/24/2007, -0/+5I agree whole hardly about Tesla what a crime that was for all his accomplishments to go unrewarded except for the Edison Award he was given which was probably a bigger slap in the face than a honor.
- davidmcraney, on 11/24/2007, -0/+4SEVEN Geniuses WHO never won the Nobel Prize
FTFY - Devotia, on 11/24/2007, -0/+4Wireless electricity, flying cars, and death rays for everyone.
- arjie, on 11/24/2007, -0/+4Wait, so you agree wholly or hardly? What is it?! I must know!
- inactive, on 11/24/2007, -0/+4Yeah it's amazing how many talents never get recognized.
- l00s3r, on 11/24/2007, -1/+4Keynesian economics is nonsense, so that's probably why Joan Robinson didn't win "Sveriges Riksbank Prize in Economic Sciences in Memory of Alfred Nobel".
- inactive, on 11/24/2007, -0/+3The fields medal is restricted to those under 40, which sucks. People over 40 like Andrew Wiles deserve the medal.
- inactive, on 11/24/2007, -1/+4Mendeleev deserves a Nobel Prize for discovering the optimum percentage of alcohol in vodka.
- jakkals, on 11/24/2007, -0/+3Christiaan Barnard. Medicine. First dude to do a heart transplant on humans. Unfortunately for him he was a white from apartheid South Africa, and giving him the prize would not have been popular...
- foolonthehill, on 11/24/2007, -0/+3*sigh* Digg really need to come up with a better system for URLs. Full link is http://nobelprize.org/nobel_prizes/economics/artic ...
- Devotia, on 11/24/2007, -1/+4SnapETom once killed an orphan baby to suck out its blood, which he then used to drown a paraplegic genius working on the cure for cancer.
At least, that's what I read on the internet. - foolonthehill, on 11/24/2007, -0/+3That is a pretty misleading statment. Referring to the Sveriges Riksbank Prize as a Nobel Prize in Economics is a pretty widely accepted simplification.
"The award is given by the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences according to the same principles as for the Nobel Prizes that have been awarded since 1901. The procedures for selecting the laureates are also the same."

- inactive, on 11/24/2007, -2/+4Why?
- inactive, on 11/24/2007, -0/+2He created the Nobel Peace Prize in his will.
- wunderdog, on 11/24/2007, -0/+2Thank you for the 'who' not 'that' correction. The numbers 0-9 are always spelled out in a sentence.
- BigBrother87, on 11/24/2007, -0/+2Run-on sentence and grammatical errors FTW. But at least you can use numbers properly. Oh, and WTF is FTFY?
- Ludnix, on 11/24/2007, -0/+2The numeral "7" is perfectly fine you use in text as long as numerals are used throughout the rest of the text in reference to numbers.
FTFY. - grason1129, on 11/25/2007, -2/+4Al Gore won for making a movie about global warming, this thing is a joke!
- caboosemoose, on 11/24/2007, -0/+2Franklin did not discover the molecule, which had been well established in the nucleus and pretty much confirmed as the source of heredity for decades. She did manage to get the best X-ray crystalography images of the molcule though, which established the double helical shape. Her work was indeed stolen by Wilkins, and her treatment by her colleague and institutional rivals in Watson and Crick was virtually sexist, but she is not blameless in the episode. She deliberately hid her work when approached to share it, and publicly dismissed the conjecture of the double helical shape in her department in an attempt to make Wilkins look foolish. She also was not doing anything with her images to postulate an overall structure for the molecule, which only happened when Watson and Crick were able to look at her images. And ultimately, if she hadn't died of cancer she would have been jointly honoured as well. It's not a terribly good advertisement for collaborative science all round, but she certainly shouldn't be seen as a victim of stealing who was usurped from an achievement she would have otherwise made entirely independently.
- thomashauk, on 11/24/2007, -0/+2Most advances in maths are made by people under 30...
- CatsAreGods, on 11/25/2007, -0/+2Not dugg because Tesla's not on the list.
- SnapETom, on 11/24/2007, -4/+6It's time to end this cult of Ghandi. The man was a racist. He regularly wrote about the distinction between Indians and Blacks (called "Kaffirs" and "Natives" in his writings) to try and convince the British that Indians should not be considered as "uncivil" as Blacks. During his time in South Africa, he defended the apartheid system. Google Ghandi and racism and you'll see his many writings.
- ArchangelZLT, on 11/25/2007, -0/+2Trolls always seize the first comment. Digg rule?
- xirtap, on 11/24/2007, -0/+2Yeah, once every fourth year..
- randomperson123, on 11/25/2007, -0/+2HEY! Extremely boring sciences? I resent that!
- Zique, on 11/24/2007, -0/+1Yeah, it's so much nonsense that it's the foundation of economy for every major nation.
- ktomb03, on 11/25/2007, -1/+2I stopped reading as soon as I read this
"he came up with all sorts of mathematical theories with crazy names"
dugg down for making math seem like we have crazy illogical names although I appreciate the acknowledgment of the math community - Danihana, on 11/25/2007, -0/+1Poor Mathematics. It makes my math teaching fiance sad.
- inactive, on 11/25/2007, -0/+1fixed that for you
now go RTFM - DopplerDuck, on 11/25/2007, -0/+1Dugg for the comments!
